Use Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing To Estimate Water Quality, Mbongowo J. Mbuh
Use Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing To Estimate Water Quality, Mbongowo J. Mbuh
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
Approximating and forecasting water variables like phosphorus, nitrogen, chlorophyll, dissolved organic matter, and turbidity are of supreme importance due to their strong influence on water resource quality. This chapter is aimed at showing the practicability of merging water quality observations from remote sensing with water quality modeling for efficient and effective monitoring of water quality. We examine the spatial dynamics of water quality with hyperspectral remote sensing and present approaches that can be used to estimate water quality using hyperspectral images. The methods presented here have been embraced because the bluegreen and green algae peak wavelengths reflectance are close together …

After decades of high deer populations, North American forests have lost much of their previous biodiversity. Any landscape‐level recovery requires substantial reduc‐ tions in deer herds, but modern societies and wildlife management agencies appear unable to devise appropriate solutions to this chronic ecological and human health crisis. We evaluated the effectiveness of fertility control and hunting in reducing deer impacts at Cornell University. We estimated spring deer populations and planted Quercus rubra seedlings to assess deer browse pressure, rodent attack, and other factors compromising seedling performance. Oak seedlings protected in cages grew well, but deer annually browsed ≥60% of unprotected …

Fertilizer Use In China: The Role Of Agricultural Support Policies, Yinhao Wu, Enru Wang, Changhong Miao
Fertilizer Use In China: The Role Of Agricultural Support Policies, Yinhao Wu, Enru Wang, Changhong Miao
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
Using a decomposition method, this paper proposes an analytical framework to investigate the mechanisms by which agricultural support policies affect farmers’ use of fertilizers in agriculture in China. The mechanisms are decomposed into “three effects” (structural, scale, and technological effects). It is found that China’s agricultural support polices have significantly contributed to the increased use of agricultural fertilizers through encouraging farmers to bring more land under cultivation (the scale effect). Meanwhile, some policies have also helped reduce fertilizer consumption when farmers were motivated to increase the area of grains crops (the structural effect). The role of technological progress in affecting …

Biology Faculty Publications
Lesser snow goose (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) populations have dramatically altered vegetation communities through increased foraging pressure. In remote regions, regular habitat assessments are logistically challenging and time consuming. Drones are increasingly being used by ecologists to conduct habitat assessments, but reliance on georeferenced data as ground truth may not always be feasible. We estimated goose habitat degradation using photointerpretation of drone imagery and compared estimates to those made with ground-based linear transects. In July 2016, we surveyed five study plots in La Pérouse Bay, Manitoba, to evaluate the effectiveness of a fixed-wing drone with simple Red Green Blue …

An Exploration Of Colorectal Cancer Incidence Rates In North Dakota, Usa, Via Structural Equation Modeling, Gary G. Schwartz, Marilyn G. Klug, Bradley C. Rundquist
An Exploration Of Colorectal Cancer Incidence Rates In North Dakota, Usa, Via Structural Equation Modeling, Gary G. Schwartz, Marilyn G. Klug, Bradley C. Rundquist
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
Purpose The state of North Dakota has one of the highest incidence rates for colorectal cancer in the USA. Its high incidence rate, coupled with a large variation in incidence rates among counties within the state, makes North Dakota a “natural laboratory” in which to investigate environmental clues to colorectal cancer. We conducted a hypothesis-generating study to explore potential determinants of colorectal cancer in North Dakota.
Methods We obtained county-specific incidence rates for North Dakota’s 53 counties from the statewide cancer registry and corresponding data on county demographic, agricultural, and geophysical features from population-based sources. Candidate demographic/agricultural variables included median …

A Comparison Of Pharmacologic Interventions In Pregnant Women With Opioid Use Disorder, Catherine M. Bopp
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
The purpose of this research and systematic literature review is to determine which pharmacotherapeutic agent, methadone or buprenorphine, leads to better outcomes in cases of pregnant mothers with opioid use disorder (OUD). Outcomes considered are maternal compliance, neonatal abstinence syndrome severity, and neonatal length of hospital stay. In the review, PubMed, Clinical Key, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and DynaMed Plus were searched. Key terms searched were “methadone, buprenorphine, pregnancy”, “opioids, pregnancy”, “neonatal abstinence syndrome” and “medication assisted treatment, pregnancy”. Articles were narrowed with applications of filters for articles in the past fifteen years and by use of the English …

Monitoring And Modeling The Effect Of Agricultural Drainage And Recent Channel Incision On Adjacent Ground Water-Dependent Ecosystems, Philip J. Gerla
Monitoring And Modeling The Effect Of Agricultural Drainage And Recent Channel Incision On Adjacent Ground Water-Dependent Ecosystems, Philip J. Gerla
Geology and Geological Engineering Faculty Publications
Channel incision isolates flood plains, disrupts sediment transport, and degrades riparian ecology. Reactivation and periodicity of incision may affect the water table and hydrological conditions far beyond the stream margin. Long-term incision and its recent acceleration along Iron Springs Creek, North Dakota, USA, has affected adjacent ecosystems. An agricultural surface drain empties directly into the original spring-fed source of the creek, which triggered channel erosion both up- and downstream. Historical maps, recent LiDAR, and field surveying were used to characterize incision since ditch excavation in 1911. Although the soils are sandy, small hydrological gradients impede natural drainage in the surrounding …

Museum specimens play an increasingly important role in predicting the outcomes and revealing the consequences of anthropogenically driven disruption of the biosphere. As ecological communities respond to ongoing environmental change, host–parasite interactions are also altered. This shifting landscape of host–parasite associations creates opportunities for colonization of different hosts and emergence of new pathogens, with implications for wildlife conservation and management, public health, and other societal concerns. Integrated archives that document and preserve mammal specimens along with their communities of associated parasites and ancillary data provide a powerful resource for investigating, anticipating, and mitigating the epidemiological, ecological, and evolutionary impacts of …

Reading The Landscape In Antler, North Dakota: Repeat Photography In An Atrophying Northern Plains Town, William A. Wetherholt, Gregory S. Vandeberg
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
This study presents repeat photography as an effective method to construct a narrative of change for a cultural landscape. The technique of repeat photography is the process of revisiting the vantage point of a historic photograph and capturing a contemporary image. This chapter focuses on the town of Antler, North Dakota, which has lost more than 85% of its population in the last 50 years (the 2016 estimated population was 25). Repeat photography with eleven historic photographs in Antler began to uncover a story of abandonment and change over the last century. It is this telling of a story through …

Late Summer Glacial Meltwater Contributions To Bull Lake Creek Stream Flow And Water Quality, Wind River Range, Wyoming, Usa, Jeffrey Vanlooy, Gregory S. Vandeberg
Late Summer Glacial Meltwater Contributions To Bull Lake Creek Stream Flow And Water Quality, Wind River Range, Wyoming, Usa, Jeffrey Vanlooy, Gregory S. Vandeberg
Earth System Science and Policy Faculty Publications
The Wind River Range in Wyoming contains more glacial ice than any other location within the USA’s Rocky Mountain states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Bull Lake Creek watershed in the southeast portion of the range contains five major (0.6–1.5 km2) glaciers along with numerous smaller glaciers that contribute to the Wind River. Field measurements were made of discharge from the Knife Point and Bull Lake Glaciers to determine the contribution of glacial meltwater to the river system. Water samples were collected and analyzed for stable isotopes, major ions, nutrients, and selected trace elements. Meltwater from the two glaciers …
