Employee And Employer Perceptions Of The Workplace-Personal Life Interface In The Midwest, Debra Dose Gebeke Aug 1996

Employee And Employer Perceptions Of The Workplace-Personal Life Interface In The Midwest, Debra Dose Gebeke

Theses and Dissertations

Most research regarding the workplace and personal life balance has been conducted from the employer (macro level approach) or employee (micro level approach) perspective in a large business context. More recently a call for research using a contextual effects model which examines the interface between the workplace and personal life has been issued. There is also limited research in smaller businesses (fewer than 500 employees), such as those more prevalent in the Midwest. This gap in the research is addressed in the present study.

A sample of 17 businesses from North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska reflecting the smaller …

The Faculty Writing Seminars As A Means Of Faculty Development: Enhancing Faculty Writing, Improving Instructions, And Fostering Collegiality, Joyce A. White May 1996

The Faculty Writing Seminars As A Means Of Faculty Development: Enhancing Faculty Writing, Improving Instructions, And Fostering Collegiality, Joyce A. White

Theses and Dissertations

University faculty are charged with three major responsibilities: research, teaching, and service. While universities have developed various strategies to assist faculty in balancing these professional demands, minimal institutional effort has been devoted to nurturing faculty writing, despite the fact that scholarly research productivity is in reality the primary criterion for decisions regarding promotion and tenure. In the last ten years, however, several faculty writing support groups have been instituted to address this aspect of faculty development.

This study examined the University of North Dakota Faculty Writing Seminar to determine the effectiveness of the Seminar as a means of increasing scholarly …

An Analysis Of Environmental And Anthropogenic Controls On Indoor Radon Distribution In Grand Forks, North Dakota, Karen E. Butler

Theses and Dissertations

Indoor radon may be a potential health threat in a significant number of homes in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Ninety-three percent of the homes tested in 1988 to 1993 contained indoor radon levels greater than the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended action level of 4 picoCuries per liter. In addition, the average reading of indoor radon concentrations was 18.9 picoCuries per liter, well above the action level guidelines.

Several variables were examined through the use of regression analysis and a Geographic Information System in an attempt to characterize the controls on indoor radon levels in Grand Forks. The results of the …

A homogeneous, high-density, daily maximum and minimum air temperature dataset was assembled for the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (TCMA), Minnesota, USA, to conduct basic urban climatological investigations on the spatial structure and temporal-scale dependence of the urban heat island, and to quantify the urban heat island effect upon several derived environmental indices. By combining data from National Weather Service cooperative stations, the University of Minnesota-St. Paul field station, and the previously unused KSTP-TV cooperative weather station network, a merged dataset of 26 stations was assembled for the TCMA for the year l989. A key goal of multicultural education is to help students attain more positive racial attitudes. Racial incidents on college and university campuses in the United States attracted national attention. The schools in Western societies need to act decisively to help students acquire more democratic attitudes and values. The literature suggests that schools can help students become less prejudiced and acquire more democratic attitudes and values. The purpose of this study was to examine students' attitudes toward racial/ethnic issues and groups and to identify predictors of attitudes among undergraduate college students (N = 583). Reading The Cultural Landscape Through Necrogeography: A Study Of Graveyards And Ethnicity In Polk County, Minnesota, Verna Mae Kentner

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a necrogeographical account of the effort to ascertain, through studies of historical geography, settlement patterns, government census records, and church and cemetery records, the ethnicity of the population of Queen Township in Polk County, Minnesota. The total census population was compared to the total cemetery population to determine the percentages of Norwegians, Swedish, and other ethnic groups for the years 1900-1940. The problem was to find numerical affirmation that the percentage of ethnicity of the deceased should reflect the living population of this period.

The literature review focuses on the ethnicity, cultural landscapes, social values, visual symbolism, …

Rahq: The Evolution Of A Script Through A Rehearsal Process, Nita K. Ritzke

Theses and Dissertations

RAhq is an experiment in script creation. The intent of the work was to craft a script from research and rehearsals which would reflect the personalities of all involved. After initial research and preliminary scripting, the cast and writer/director worked together to develop scenes and characters collaboratively. The initial script was then altered to incorporate the work from rehearsals. The final script was given full production. The process was evaluated by cast, selected respondents and the writer. RAhq, when performed, is a series of rituals and images which explore the beliefs and uses of rites associated with human death. These …

The United States And Korea, 1882-1950., Scott Gerard Zimmermann Mar 1995

The United States And Korea, 1882-1950., Scott Gerard Zimmermann

Theses and Dissertations

Intervention by the United States in the Korean War in June 1950 represented a remarkable reversal in the traditional American policy toward Korea. Washington's decision-makers had never considered Korea an area of vital importance for the United States. American policy toward Korea prior to 1950 was characterized by neglect.Washington's abandonment of its policy of neglect in June 1950 was not motivated by a sudden concern for the Korean people, however. It was, instead, caused by rising Cold War tensions. The United States had no diplomatic relations with Korea prior to 1882. Korea's long-time role as the "Hermit Kingdom" ended in 1876. …

A Response-Centered Approach In The Secondary Language Arts Classroom: The Teachers' Perspective., Barbara Smith Livdahl Feb 1995

A Response-Centered Approach In The Secondary Language Arts Classroom: The Teachers' Perspective., Barbara Smith Livdahl

Theses and Dissertations

This paper considers the perceptions of six teacher-researchers as they constructed the response-centered approach to teaching language arts. The response-centered approach rests on the assumptions that (1) knowledge systems develop naturally and simultaneously with children's language development, (2) language is integral to the learning process, (3) learning occurs in the social setting.Three secondary English teachers, two student teachers, and a professor of education were collaborators in this study. They constructed the response-centered approach after having read and discussed research literature relevant to language and learning. They continue to define and redefine the response-centered approach as they teach. The data gathered …
