Cfd And Cpfd Modeling Of Hydrogen Production From Coal Via Lewis Ultra-Superheated Steam (Uss) Fluidized Bed Gasification, Ryan Zebadiah Knutson

Theses and Dissertations

Developmental work on the Lewis Ultra-Superheated Steam (USS) bubbling bed coal gasification is being performed as a joint venture between Ohio University (OU) and the University of North Dakota Chemical Engineering Department (UND). The research objective of this joint venture is to develop a low capital and operating cost method for gasification of coal into tar-free and hydrogen enriched synthesis gas without the need for expensive catalysts. Ultra-Superheated Steam (USS) gasification is used to convert coal to hydrogen. The process, known as Lewis USS reforming, creates an extremely hot steam flame, which is formed at the tips of the tuyeres …

The Relationship Between Physical Fitness And Executive Control Functioning In Young Adults, Margaret L. Cowles Apr 2012

The Relationship Between Physical Fitness And Executive Control Functioning In Young Adults, Margaret L. Cowles

Theses and Dissertations

Physical fitness is associated with overall health and well-being. Increasing evidence, primarily among older adults, supports the link between physical health and cognitive health, particularly with subset of cognitive processes known as executive control functioning. Executive control functioning is needed to complete complex, goal-directed activities and involves the capacity to initiate and discontinue behaviors appropriately, to monitor and modify actions as needed, to plan future behavior when faced with novel tasks and situations, and to anticipate future outcomes. To date, researchers studying the link between physical fitness and executive control functioning have largely focused on older adults and have defined …

A Study Of The Atomic Structure Of Vitreous Rare Earth Phosphates Using High Energy X-Ray Diffraction Technique, Erandi S. Gunapala Apr 2012

A Study Of The Atomic Structure Of Vitreous Rare Earth Phosphates Using High Energy X-Ray Diffraction Technique, Erandi S. Gunapala

Theses and Dissertations

The atomic-scale structure of rare-earth doped phosphate glasses with compositions (R2O3)x(P 2O5)1-x where R = Pr & Nd and 0.05 < x< 0.25 and rare earth doped sodium phosphate glasses with compositions (R2O3) x(Na2O)y(P2O 5)1-x-y where R = Nd, Eu and Dy, 0.04 < x< 0.13, and x + y ∼ 0.4 have been studied using the high energy X-ray diffraction technique. Structural features such as inter-atomic distances and coordination numbers and their dependence on the concentration of the rare-earth oxide have been obtained by analyzing pair distribution functions extracted from diffraction data. Emission spectra for rare-earth doped sodium phosphate glasses were also studied. Rare earth phosphate glasses with x< 0.16 were noticeably hygroscopic and had to be handled under controlled atmospheres. None of the rare earth sodium phosphate glasses investigated herein appeared to be hygroscopic. The P-O coordination number and near-neighbor P-O, O-O, P-P, and R-P distances are virtually independent of the R2O3 content. Pr-O coordination number decreases from approximately 8 to 6.0 as the Pr2 O3 content (x) exceeds 0.2. Structure factors and pair distribution functions for (Pr2O3) x(P2O5)1 -x glasses strongly indicate a significant change in rare-earth near neighbor coordination environment as x is increased beyond ∼ 0.20. In the case of (R2O3)x(Na 2O)y(P2O5) 1-x-y glasses, R-O coordination number decreases from approximately 9 to 6 as x increases from ∼ 0.05 to ∼ 0.13. It appears that the structural change induced by rare-earth doping occurs at much smaller rare-earth concentration in rare earth sodium phosphate glasses as compared to in rare-earth phosphate glasses. In contrast, this change occurs at similar [O]/[P] ratios, 2.9–3 approximately, in both families of glasses. This observation suggests that it is the [O]/[P] ratio of the glass and not the rare-earth oxide concentration (x) that primarily drives the change in rare-earth coordination environment. Emission spectra of rare earth phosphate glasses show that their florescence efficiency decreases with increasing rare-earth content even at relatively low concentrations (0.05 < x< 0.25) investigated suggesting that concentration quenching of lasing action may be present even at these concentrations.

Executive Functioning And Childhood Abuse Predictors On Laboratory Induced Aggression, Jessica R. Mugge Apr 2012

Executive Functioning And Childhood Abuse Predictors On Laboratory Induced Aggression, Jessica R. Mugge

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has indicated that neuropsychological dysfunction and the experience of violence during childhood are linked to the acquisition and expression of aggressive behavior. How these variables interact to influence aggression has not been effectively established in the literature, however. This study provided a prospective examination of the relationships between EF, the experience of childhood abuse, and aggression. Based on responses on a pre-screening questionnaire that assessed EF (BRIEF-A), 101 participants at a Midwestern university were selected for inclusion in this study. Fifty participants were classified as at risk for EF deficits (24 males, 26 females) while 51 participants were …

A Review Of The Benefit Of Pre-Operative Education Prior To Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Patrick C. Jahn

Theses and Dissertations

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery is the most common type of heart surgery performed each year in the United States (U.S. Department of HHS, 2010). If your healthcare provider were to tell you that you needed heart surgery what would be the first thing to come to mind, would it be fear, pain, anxiety, denial? Do you have any idea what this procedure entails or what to expect before, during, or after your hospitalization?

Preparation is most often a prerequisite for success. Multiple research studies have shown that proper patient preparation can lead to better patient outcomes, including pain and …

Concussions: Development Of A Universal Return-To-Play Guideline For Athletes Of Contact Sports, Benjamin J. Bucher

Theses and Dissertations

Sports-related concussions remain the most common head injury among athletes of contact sports. Recent estimates indicated the incidence of concussions range from 1.6-3.8 million cases per year in the United States (US). The importance of appropriate medical management of these patients is vital to their health and they should be allowed to return to their sport only after medical clearance. Concussion guidelines are currently available for primary practitioners to use in order to assist them in their clinical judgment of the concussed patient; the utilization and effectiveness of these guidelines remain in question. A literature review was performed to analyze …

Not A Drop To Drink, Beth A. Monsebroten Apr 2012

Not A Drop To Drink, Beth A. Monsebroten

Theses and Dissertations

Fluid restrictions for the management of lower extremity edema in patients with heart failure has long been a treatment standard. However, the use of evidence based medicine has found this treatment option does not have the research to support the continued use with patients. An extensive literature review was conducted to find the most appropriate treatment options for these patients. It was determined fluid restrictions are not effective in reducing lower extremity edema in patients with heart failure. The discontinuation of this practice and the use of weight based diuretic therapy are suggested. Further research should be conducted into the …

Humor In The Classroom: Predicted Outcome Values, Motivation, And Student Learning, Pete Koprince

Theses and Dissertations

While some research has been conducted examining the use of humor in the classroom in terms of how it is perceived or how it affects perceptions of an instructor, communication research has not yet explored how this use of humor can influence students in several tangible ways. These range from student's interest towards the class or the anxiety they feel about taking it. This research explored the use of appropriate humor in the classroom by instructors and its subsequent effects on student evaluations of their perceived interest and motivation in, and their anxiety for, a hypothetical college course. Research involved …

Spiritual Economies: Redemptive Violence, The Body And Social Care, Perry W. Benson Jan 2012

Spiritual Economies: Redemptive Violence, The Body And Social Care, Perry W. Benson

Theses and Dissertations

“Spiritual Economies” asserts that the emancipatory drive in international social care to integrate spirituality and religion in culturally sensitive practice, is much needed given the demographic and social changes engendered by globalization. Ethical codes guiding the practice of international social care, furthermore, have mandated that spiritual and religious beliefs are an important part of cultural diversity. An extensive examination and analysis of the discourse on the integration of religion and spirituality in the predominantly secular social services, however, yielded a number of concerns among international social care scholars and practitioners regarding the inclusion of religion due to the potential for …

The Impact Of Resiliency And Biculturalism On Subjective Well Being In A Northern Plains American Indian Tribe, Paula Maureen Carter Jan 2012

The Impact Of Resiliency And Biculturalism On Subjective Well Being In A Northern Plains American Indian Tribe, Paula Maureen Carter

Theses and Dissertations

For generations American Indians struggled with the burden of historical trauma. Despite this trauma, American Indian people have survived and many flourish. With the majority of American Indian research focusing on deficits in this population it is difficult to gain a perspective that positive, strength-based factors may contribute to this cultural survival. The intent of this study is to present evidence for the position that resiliency exists in this population and that the resilience is directly related to acculturation, specifically a bicultural orientation. Further, subjective well-being is impacted by resiliency and biculturalism. Participants from a Northern Plains Ojibwa tribe completed …

Educating And Communicating Through Sociolinguistic Registers: Adolescent Client, Chanaé Jones, Brittany Mayer Jan 2012

Educating And Communicating Through Sociolinguistic Registers: Adolescent Client, Chanaé Jones, Brittany Mayer

Occupational Therapy Capstones

PROBLEM: Currently tests such as the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) and ACT (American College Testing), as well as employment use what is identified as formal sociolinguistic register (Joos, 1967 & Payne, 2005). Payne (2005) built upon Joos’ (1967) definition and presented five registers: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimates. Formal register is defined as; one-way participation, no interruption such as is seen with introductions between stangers. Technical vocabulary; “fuzzy semantics" or exact definitions are important. Montano-Harmon (1991) found that many minority and poor students do not have access to formal register at home but rather tend to rely primarily in …

An Occupational Therapy-Based Education Program For Caregivers Of Individuals With Cerebral Palsy: A Culturally Conscious Perspective, Allison L. Kalb, Diana L. Huettl

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Introduction: Individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) are able to lead functional, productive, and fulfilling lives when provided the opportunity. In the country of Ghana, the prevalence of CP is estimated to be one out of every 300 births (Purple Field Productions [PFP], 2011), however, a lack of education about CP and other disabilities, limited access to healthcare services, and scarce resources hamper the Ghanaian people’s opportunities for habilitation (Reynolds, 2010; Tinney, Chiodo, Haig, & Wiredu, 2007). In addition, cultural beliefs and societal attitudes toward people with disabilities in Ghana pose a barrier for those individuals to fully participate in occupation. …

Resource Manual For Occupational Therapists: Providing Transportation Related Resources To The Elderly Living In Poverty In North Dakota, Amanda Ralston, Lukas Wavra Jan 2012

Resource Manual For Occupational Therapists: Providing Transportation Related Resources To The Elderly Living In Poverty In North Dakota, Amanda Ralston, Lukas Wavra

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Between the ages of 65 and 74, 9% of elderly individuals live in poverty in the United States (Forum, 2010). This poverty rate increases to 11% in elderly individuals who are 75 years of age or older (Forum, 2010). In rural areas, the effects of poverty may be even more pronounced than in urban areas secondary to the societal limitations that exist within some small rural communities; rural areas in North Dakota routinely face both the effects of poverty and the societal limitations. These limitations may include a lack of public transportation or services available to the general public. Due …

Developing Fine Motor Skills In Preschool Age Children, Linnea Starkey Jan 2012

Developing Fine Motor Skills In Preschool Age Children, Linnea Starkey

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Based on the findings of the literature review, fine motor skills are an important skill to develop during the preschool years. Marr, Cermak, Cohan and Henderson (2003) described the importance of fine motor skills to engage in valued occupations in addition to educational activities. A child's occupations that demand fine motor skills may be dressing, tying shoes, play, among other daily tasks. If a child has difficulty with fine motor skills it could have a negative outcome on their daily lives and how they perform in school. Children who have difficulty coordinating the small muscle groups in their hands have …
