Keratin 6 As A Potential Biomarker Of Bladder Cancer Induced By Heavy Metals, Arsenic And Cadmium, Ling Cao Sep 2012

Keratin 6 As A Potential Biomarker Of Bladder Cancer Induced By Heavy Metals, Arsenic And Cadmium, Ling Cao

Theses and Dissertations

Arsenic and cadmium (Cd2+) are environmental carcinogens that have been implicated in the development of bladder cancer. However, there are no good in vitro model systems to study the development of bladder cancer caused by these carcinogens. Previous studies from this laboratory have shown that arsenite (As3+) and Cd2+ exposure can cause direct malignant transformation of an immortalized human urothelial cell line, the UROtsa. In the present study the repeatability of the transformation process was examined by isolating and characterizing 6 additional Cd2+- transformed lines and 5 additional As3+- transformed cell lines. All the transformed cell lines formed tumors when …

Life Cycle And Radiative Impact Of Mid-Latitude Deep Convective Systems, Zhe Feng Sep 2012

Life Cycle And Radiative Impact Of Mid-Latitude Deep Convective Systems, Zhe Feng

Theses and Dissertations

Deep Convective Systems (DCSs) have profound impacts on the hydrologic cycle and atmospheric radiation budget. The former is a result of the heavy precipitation from the convective cores (CC) and widespread rainfall in the stratiform rain (SR) regions, and the latter is due to the extensive spatial coverage of the non-precipitating anvil clouds (AC). Yet the relationship between these components has not been well understood, leading to large uncertainties for models across all scales in the simulated DCS structures and their associated impacts. To improve the understanding of the connections between DCS components, multi-platform remote sensing datasets are used to …

Trace Element Partitioning During Coal Combustion Using A New In Situ/ Direct Method, Anna Raeva Sep 2012

Trace Element Partitioning During Coal Combustion Using A New In Situ/ Direct Method, Anna Raeva

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, a novel in situ/direct method has been developed to simulate the partitioning and estimate the chemical speciation of three toxic semi-volatile trace elements (TEs), arsenic, antimony and selenium, during coal combustion. The method involves the use of a modified graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer (GFAAS) as a simultaneous high temperature (up to 2800 °C) in situ pyrolysis simulator, sample collector and analytical platform. Several methods for calculating activation parameters were compared and a simple, yet accurate method was selected for calculations. It was shown that the activation parameters determined using this method are independent from instrument operational …

Leptin Expression And Signaling At The Confluence Of Neurodegenerative Mechanisms In Alzheimer Disease, Gurdeep Singh Atamjit Marwarha Sep 2012

Leptin Expression And Signaling At The Confluence Of Neurodegenerative Mechanisms In Alzheimer Disease, Gurdeep Singh Atamjit Marwarha

Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer Disease (AD) is a progressive, debilitating and the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder affecting 5.5 million people and the sixth leading cause of fatality in the United States. The etiology of AD is not understood and clinically FDA-approved drugs offer only symptomatic relief for a short period of time and in only a subset of AD patients. AD is histopathologically characterized by the presence of extracellular deposits of aggregated Amyloid β (Aβ) peptide as plaques and the intracellular deposition of aggregated hyperphosphorylated tau protein as neurofibrillary tangles (NFT). Leptin, an adipocytokine, has been demonstrated to reduce the genesis of Aβ, …

Theoretical Development And Application Of Gvvpt2 Gradients And Nonadiabatic Coupling Terms, Daniel P. Theis Sep 2012

Theoretical Development And Application Of Gvvpt2 Gradients And Nonadiabatic Coupling Terms, Daniel P. Theis

Theses and Dissertations

Using a Lagrangian based approach, mathematical expressions were derived that analytically determine electric dipole moments, nuclear gradients, and nonadiabatic coupling coefficients for electronic states at the second-order generalized Van Vleck perturbation theory (GVVPT2) and the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) levels of theory. The equations were expressed in a manner that ensures the slowest portions of the computer code are independent of the nuclear degrees of freedom that differentiate the energies and wavefunctions. The codes were implemented using a configuration-driven unitary group approach (UGA). Under this approach the efficient UGA method of evaluating configuration state function (CSF) matrix elements is recast …

An X-Ray Absorption Study Of The Atomic Structure Of Novel Vitreous Rare-Earth Phosphates, Aranwela Hemantha Sep 2012

An X-Ray Absorption Study Of The Atomic Structure Of Novel Vitreous Rare-Earth Phosphates, Aranwela Hemantha

Theses and Dissertations

The atomic-scale structure of four series of binary rare earth phosphate glasses of composition (R2O3)x (P2O5)1-x, where R = Nd, Pr, Eu, and Sm were investigated. Compositions of praseodymium phosphate glasses ranged from polyphosphate to ultraphosphate (0.108 < x < 0.295), while neodymium phosphate compositions varied from metaphosphate to ultraphosphate (0.204 < x < 0.255). Samarium phosphates and the two europium phosphate glasses investigated were ultraphosphates with very low rare earth contents (x < 0.15). The R3+ local environment of these glasses was investigated using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. A series of neodymium borate glasses with the general formula (Nd2O 3)x(B2O3)1-x (0.01 < x < 0.35) was also analyzed. For both neodymium and praseodymium phosphate glasses the nearest neighbor oxygen coordination decreases with increasing rare earth concentrations. For the first oxygen shell the R-O distance ranged between 2.38-2.40 Å and 2.39-2.46 Å for neodymium and praseodymium glasses, respectively. The second coordination shell consisted of phosphorus atoms, with R-P distance about 3.4-3.5 Å and coordination numbers (CN) ranged from 1.5 to 3. There was an oxygen shell (a second oxygen shell) at R-O distance 4.1 Å for both series. In this composition range, there is no direct evidence of short R-R distances by clustering of rare earth atoms. But first shell R-O CN's obtained suggest sharing of some of the oxygens by two rare-earth ions when the composition x is greater (approximately) than 0.17. Samarium ultraphosphates and europium ultraphosphates (x < 0.15) had first shell R-O distances between 2.38 Å and 2.43 Å. R-P and second R-O shell positions were approximately at 3.7-3.8 Å and at 4.5-4.65 Å respectively. There is no evidence of rare earth clustering in these samples with low rare earth concentrations. First R-O shell CN and the bond distance decreases with the increasing RE concentration for neodymium borate glasses following the same trend as in phosphate glasses. R-B coordination is much higher than the R-P CN's obtained for phosphates.

Effective Handoff Communication, Walter O. Nyabere Jul 2012

Effective Handoff Communication, Walter O. Nyabere

Theses and Dissertations

Missed medical orders and incorrect medication orders are part of the fundamental reasons for medication errors and sentinel events. Missed orders primarily arise from communication failure of both the messenger and the intended receiver. Much of the evidence that connects communication failure with missed or misunderstood orders and sentinel events comes from retrospective analyses of past sentinel events. This connection has been recorded in numerous parts of the world and is a topic worthy of exploration. This independent study examined retrospective analyses, a literature review, and evidenced based studies to determine how specific "communication issues" lead to errors. The author …

Effective Blood Pressure Measurement, Sheri L. Mommerency Jul 2012

Effective Blood Pressure Measurement, Sheri L. Mommerency

Theses and Dissertations

The author developed a learning event that is designed to provide a continuation of the didactic and clinical methodologies taught in undergraduate, basic nurse education programs. The staff development learning event Effective Blood Pressure Measurement is based upon a clinical question this author posed after years of professional observation noting the ambiguity demonstrated by health care providers and various institutions with regards to clinical practice guideline use, and the lack of enforcement on training and oversight of accurate blood pressure measurement (BPM) in the clinical setting. The ambiguity and lack of oversight has been linked to poor blood pressure control …

Dexmedetomidine For Non-Invasive Pediatric Procedural Sedation, Jennifer Schumann

Theses and Dissertations

Dexmedetomidine is a relatively new sedative medication that has been shown to offer a better J safety profile in terms of decreased incidence of respiratory depression and airway collapsibility over other agents. This is an ideal quality in a sedative medication for use in the pediatric population, as airway compromise during sedation is the leading complication resulting in morbidity and mortality within this population. Currently, it is only FDA approved for use in adults. However, over the past several years it has also been used as an off-label medication and studied for multiple indications within the pediatric population. Non-invasive procedural …

Persuasion And Manipulation: Relevance Across Multiple Audiences, Kevin Sparks May 2012

Persuasion And Manipulation: Relevance Across Multiple Audiences, Kevin Sparks

Theses and Dissertations

A speaker who is addressing multiple audiences has split intentions. In order to derive the optimal benefit toward accomplishing her intentions, the speaker crafts her utterance to be relevant to her various audiences in different ways and to differing degrees. Similarly, the hearer will infer meaning based largely on how much he thinks that the speaker intended her utterance to be relevant to him, while also considering how the utterance may have been intended to be relevant to others. The goal of this paper is to describe how the presence of multiple audiences affects both the speaker's formation of an …

Aeronautical Decision Making In Helicopter Emergency Medical Systems (Hems): The Effect Of Mission Orientation And Local Base Finances On The Go/No Go Decision, Paul Cline May 2012

Aeronautical Decision Making In Helicopter Emergency Medical Systems (Hems): The Effect Of Mission Orientation And Local Base Finances On The Go/No Go Decision, Paul Cline

Theses and Dissertations

Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) is among the most dangerous type of flying in the United States today. In 2008 it was safer to fly medical evacuation missions in Iraq and Afghanistan than in the Continental United States. This study is designed to test whether the financial performance of the local base and a hyper mission orientation have a negative effect on aeronautical decision making among HEMS crews. A Likert type survey was administered to HEMS pilots and medical crews to ascertain their thoughts and feelings regarding the two questions under investigation. While the data clearly showed that poor financial …

Phonological Complexity: The Interaction Of Three-Element Clusters And Word Lexacility On Speech Sound Disorders, Heidi Joann Simon May 2012

Phonological Complexity: The Interaction Of Three-Element Clusters And Word Lexacility On Speech Sound Disorders, Heidi Joann Simon

Theses and Dissertations

Phonological complexity and word lexicality have been shown to induce phonological change in children with speech-sound disorders (SSDs); however, no prior research has used three-element cluster treatment target to directly compare real words (RW) to non-words (NW). Thus, the current research project sets out to answer the question of treatment efficacy in terms of real words and non-words using the complex three-element target, /str-/. Using a repeated measures single-subject research design, five children (5;7 to 7;7) were split into two SSD treatment groups (RW and NW) and directly compared in terms of learning during treatment, generalization from treatment, sound segments …
