Diagnostic Strategies For Gout, Rebekah Aakre Mar 2014

Diagnostic Strategies For Gout, Rebekah Aakre

Theses and Dissertations

Gout is a complex form of arthritis and is commonly seen and treated by the primary care provider. When a swollen, red, inflamed metatarsophalangeal joint is seen on exam it is easy to jump to the conclusion of a diagnosis of gout. A single clinical finding of gout is not enough information to diagnose gout. It is important to know what type of fluid is causing the inflamed joint in order to treat it appropriately. A literature search was conducted using the Harley French Library at the University of North Dakota. The author began the search by using two of …

Palivizumab Administration Decreases Recurrent Wheeze, Shelly Daniels

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Children who have been infected with Respiratory Syncytial Virus have a higher incidence of wheeze-associated clinic visits and hospitalizations compared to children without previous RSV exposure. The purpose of this study is to determine if palivizumab, an immunoglobulin injection used to prevent RSV infections, can decrease the incidence of recurrent wheezing in children. The review of literature will follow male and female children from infancy to age 13 who were treated with palivizumab and compare these children to patients with similar demographics that were not treated with palivizumab to determine if there is any difference in incidence of wheezing. The …

Cervical Radiculopathy: A Case Report, Kimberly Dobrovolny Jan 2014

Cervical Radiculopathy: A Case Report, Kimberly Dobrovolny

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

There is currently little evidence to determine which conservative treatment approach is best for the management of patients with cervical radiculopathy; however, there is evidence these patients benefit from a multi-treatment approach. The purpose of this case is to describe the physical therapy management of a patient with cervical radiculopathy. Physical therapy diagnosis was based on the patient’s physical signs and symptoms as well as meeting three of the four criteria of the clinical prediction rule which is used to identify patients with cervical radiculopathy. Results from the examination and evaluation were consistent with the magnetic resonance imaging findings. Physical …

Hypertonic Saline Therapy In Cystic Fibrosis, Idil Mohamed Jan 2014

Hypertonic Saline Therapy In Cystic Fibrosis, Idil Mohamed

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder that severely affects the lungs as well as other organs in the body. The pathophysiology of cystic fibrosis lung disease involves the production of thick and sticky mucus that accumulates leading to obstruction and inflammation of the airways. This disease is characterized by abnormal transport of sodium and chloride across an epithelium by defective genes, resulting in thick mucus secretions.

Nebulized hypertonic saline (3% NaCl) improves mucociliary clearance through rehydration of the airway surface liquid of the lungs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of nebulized hypertonic saline …

The Abd Of Orthography Testing: Practical Guidelines, Elke Karan Jan 2014

The Abd Of Orthography Testing: Practical Guidelines, Elke Karan

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Developing an orthography for a previously unwritten language may prove to be more of a challenge than anticipated. Orthography testing can help field workers and the speech community identify issues which warrant special attention. Subsequent testing will reveal whether or not various factors have been taken into consideration and challenges overcome. Findings might indicate that the orthography functions well or that it requires additional thought, revision, and /or additional testing.

Few how-to helps on orthography testing exist. Drawing from various resources, the author provides practical guidelines and resources for field workers who are planning to engage in orthography testing activities.

Restoration, Presence And Computer Use: How Computer Displays Incorporating Restorative Environments Effect Users' Sense Of Restoration And Presence, Jacob Bell

Theses and Dissertations

Recent technological advances provide opportunities for computer users to replace

desktop pictures with dynamic, audio-visual recordings. Such advances provide researchers with opportunities to better understand how specific video content may effect users' sense of restoration and presence. As described within Attention Restoration Theory, those perceiving restorative environments, which are found primarily within nature-based environments, experience a sense of restoration. Yet, prior research has largely focused on singular, and to an extent, non-interactive displays of restorative environments. The current research further investigated the restorative potential of environments having incorporated interactive, computer-based displays, with animated audio-visual environments. Participants were assigned to either …

Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Renewable Energy Sources In Power Distribution Networks, Samir Dahal Jan 2014

Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Renewable Energy Sources In Power Distribution Networks, Samir Dahal

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation study, various methods for optimum allocation of renewable distributed generators (DGs) in both balanced and unbalanced distribution networks have been proposed, developed, and tested. These methods were developed with an objective of maximizing several advantages of DG integration into the current distribution system infrastructure.

The first method addressed the optimal sitting and sizing of DGs for minimum distribution power losses and maximum voltage profile improvement of distribution feeders. The proposed method was validated by comparing the results of a balanced distribution system with those reported in the literature. This method was then implemented in a co-simulation environment …

Forecast Bias Analysis Using Object-Based Verification Of Regional Wrf Summertime Convective Forecasts, Mariusz Starzec

Theses and Dissertations

Forecast verification remains a crucial component of improving model forecasts, but still remains a challenge to perform. An objective method is developed to verify simulated reflectivity against radar reflectivity at a 1 km altitude utilizing the Method for Object-based Diagnostic Evaluation (MODE) Tool. Comparing the reflectivity field allows for an instantaneous view of what is occurring in simulations without any averaging that may occur when analyzing fields such as accumulated precipitation. The objective method is applied to high resolution 3 km and 1 km local convective WRF summertime forecasts in the Northern Plains region. The bulk verification statistics reveal that …
