The Use Of The Blackboard Architecture For A Decision Making System For The Control Of Craft With Various Actuator And Movement Capabilities, Jeremy Straub, Hassan Reza
Computer Science Faculty Publications
This paper provides an overview of an approach to the control of multiple craft with heterogeneous movement and actuation characteristics that is based on the Blackboard software architecture. An overview of the Blackboard architecture is provided. Then, the operational and mission requirements that dictate the need for autonomous control are characterized and the utility of the Blackboard architecture is for meeting these requirements is discussed. The performance of a best-path solver and naïve solver are compared. The results demonstrate that the best-path solver outperforms the naïve solver in the amount of time taken to generate a solution, however, the number …
A Constrained, Possibilistic Logical Approach For Software System Survivability Evaluation, Yanjun Zuo
A Constrained, Possibilistic Logical Approach For Software System Survivability Evaluation, Yanjun Zuo
Accountancy Faculty Publications
In this paper, we present a logical framework to facilitate users in assessing a software system in terms of the required survivability features. Survivability evaluation is essential in linking foreign software components to an existing system or obtaining software systems from external sources. It is important to make sure that any foreign components/systems will not compromise the current system’s survivability properties. Given the increasing large scope and complexity of modern software systems, there is a need for an evaluation framework to accommodate uncertain, vague, or even ill-known knowledge for a robust evaluation based on multi-dimensional criteria. Our framework incorporates user-defined …

Examining The Role Of Motivation In The Relationship Between Perceived Academic Stress And Coping Among Freshmen, Ying Dong
Theses and Dissertations
First-year college students commonly face academic stress that is negatively associated with academic achievement and persistence. It has been found that problem-focused coping (PFC) effectively decreases stress, but emotion-focused coping (EFC) exacerbates stressful situations in the long term (Carver & Scheier, 1994; Kim & Duda, 2003). Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984) Transactional Model of Stress and Coping (TMSC) posits that cognitive appraisals determine the selection of stress coping. In the current study, two motivation indicators, causal attributions for academic stress and value of college education, were recognized as cognitive appraisals that were respectively placed into the TMSC to test their role …

Theses and Dissertations
The research will focus on the discussion of the ways in which the top-down nature of Safety Management Systems (SMS) can be used to create „Just Culture‟ within the aviation industry. Specific focus will be placed on an aviation program conducted by an accredited university, with the institution in focus being the midwest aviation training program. To this end, a variety of different aspects of safety culture in aviation and aviation management will be considered. The focus on the implementation strategies vital for the existence of a „Just Culture‟ within the aviation industry in general, and particularly within the aforementioned …

Increasing Emergency Department Nurses Confidence With Potentially Violent Patient Care Situations, Jane Mattila
Theses and Dissertations
Workplace violence is increasing in the healthcare and emergency department (ED) violence is escalating to the point where nurses experience violent assaults at 12 times the national average (U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2008). The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) conducted a survey of over 3,000 emergency nurses and found 86% of those surveyed had encountered physical violence within the last three years (Emergency Nurses Association [ENA], 2008) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) (2011) and the Joint Commission (2010) require healthcare facilities to organize a plan to provide for the safety and security of employees and …
Contraceptive Counseling And The Relationship To Chlamydia Prevention And Screening, Bernice Kane
Contraceptive Counseling And The Relationship To Chlamydia Prevention And Screening, Bernice Kane
Theses and Dissertations
Contraceptive counseling is a common issue for today's health care clinicians. An important aspect of a thorough contraceptive counseling visit includes sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk history and screening. Chlamydia is the most common STI and it is especially problematic among women under the age of 25. Untreated infections, which are often asymptomatic, can result in serious complications such a pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and ectopic pregnancy. Clinicians have a unique opportunity and responsibility to assist in the prevention of STI. Stressing responsible behavior and providing the necessary education, support, and resources are important aspects of primary prevention. Identifying risk …

Motivational Interviewing: An Effective Intervention For Faith Community Nurses, Lois J. Ustanko
Theses and Dissertations
Motivational interviewing (Ml) is an effective technique for helping clients make lifestyle changes and adhere to recommended treatment plans. Faith community nurses trained to use motivational interviewing can empower individuals to make changes which reduce their risk for complications from chronic health conditions. Findings suggest a faith community nurse who uses motivational interviewing techniques during health coaching has a greater likelihood of helping clients with hypertension make lifestyle changes that reduce the risk for complications from cardiovascular disease.
Implementing The Use Of Tranexamic Acid In The Acute Traumatically Injury Patient, Erin Beck
Implementing The Use Of Tranexamic Acid In The Acute Traumatically Injury Patient, Erin Beck
Theses and Dissertations
Every year, traumatic injury accounts for more than five million deaths, and millions of more hospitalizations and emergency department visits worldwide. If the trauma patient does reach the hospital, more than half of those die from hemorrhage (Roberts, Shakur, Coats, et al., 2013) .
A review of literature was performed to evaluate the use of TXA in the traumatically injured patient experiencing hemorrhage or at significant risk for hemorrhage. It was concluded the use of TXA was indicated in this patient population, and the implementation of its use in the acute care setting was appropriate.
The Theory of Symptom Management …

Safety Management Systems In Aviation Operations In The United States: Is The Return On Investment Worth The Cost?, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum
Aviation Faculty Publications
The economic benefits of safety programs in aviation operations in the United States are undeniable. Making a strong business case for these programs is not easy, since safety is not tangible until there are accidents and incidents. Safety Management System (SMS) is an organized approach to a systemic safety improvement and challenges the safety professional to quantify the return on investment from safety programs. The economic impact of safety occurrences on aviation operations is explored. An analysis of case study models and the financial merits of implementing proactive safety initiatives like SMS in a collegiate aviation program are explored. The …

Are Mass Screenings An Effective Diagnostic Tool For Chlamydia?, Shari Forschen
Are Mass Screenings An Effective Diagnostic Tool For Chlamydia?, Shari Forschen
Theses and Dissertations
Chlamydia Trachomatis infection has historically been a focus of primary health of adolescents and young adults in the age group between 15-24 years of age. Satterwhite et al. (2013) report sexually transmitted infections (ST!) are disproportionately larger amongst adolescent groups than adults. STI's are growing in a day and age where health promotion and disease prevention are at the forefronts of the minds of many providers. Chlamydia infections within the United States have increased nationally. Most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2013) indicate that in 2001 the chlamydia rates for women were 429.6/100,000 population …
