The Detection Of Adhd Malingering Among College Students: A New Look At Figure Drawings, Heather Lynn Mcconnell

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a significant increase in the number of college students feigning symptoms of ADHD. Students can receive a variety of accommodations when diagnosed with ADHD, along with the possibility of medication. These perceived benefits can make a diagnosis of ADHD desirable for college students. Research has found that college students can successfully feign ADHD with minimal detection, leading to improper diagnosis and potential misuse of accommodations and prescription medication. The research indicates a need for new approaches to the detection of ADHD malingering among college students.

The present study was exploratory in nature, seeking to identify drawing features …

Applying Machine Learning To Asteroid Classification Utilizing Spectroscopically Derived Spectrophotometry, Kathleen Jacinda Mcintyre Jan 2019

Applying Machine Learning To Asteroid Classification Utilizing Spectroscopically Derived Spectrophotometry, Kathleen Jacinda Mcintyre

Theses and Dissertations

Taxonomic studies of asteroids have been ongoing for more than fifty years without a clear understanding of the class parameters. The current method of Principal Component Analysis is computationally expensive and leaves ambiguous results. In this study, I selected the machine learning algorithm, k-Nearest Neighbor in combination with the current Bus-DeMeo (DeMeo, et al. 2009) taxonomic classification schema to test if machine learning can take the place of Principal Component Analysis. Using a dataset of spectrophotometric color indices derived from combined visible and near-infrared (NIR) observations and paired with Bus-DeMeo taxonomic class, I created a training dataset for the model …

Examining The Perceptions Of Bullying Between Certified And Non-Certified School Personnel, Shanna Morlock Jan 2019

Examining The Perceptions Of Bullying Between Certified And Non-Certified School Personnel, Shanna Morlock

Theses and Dissertations

Bullying has been a widely researched topic. However, many areas are yet to be researched in regards to school personnels’ perceptions. This dissertation was focused around several of these missing research areas, as well as included non-certified staff. Non-certified staff have been left out of the vast majority of studies involving school personnel and bullying. That, or their perceptions have not been explored as a separate group of school personnel. This is problematic as non-certified staff are often part of supervisory roles in settings where bullying often occurs. This study addressed differences among school personnel perceptions in regards to bullying …

The Influence Of Media Bias Perception On Space Publications, Benjamin Robert Raback-Schink Jan 2019

The Influence Of Media Bias Perception On Space Publications, Benjamin Robert Raback-Schink

Theses and Dissertations

In an ideal world, scientific research and news would be published and reported through non-bias outlets and readers would view those sources favorably. However, that is an unrealistic expectation of our current society in which many believe that any publication will contain some bias. This thesis aimed to discover three factors on the topic. One was to see whether members of the space community view various news sources as biased, and to what degree they do if so. The second factor was to see how the general public viewed those same sources. These data were then used to compare the …

Influences Of Nesting Behaviors In Common Eiders (Somateria Mollissima Sedentaria) In The Western Hudson Bay, Tanner John Stechmann Jan 2019

Influences Of Nesting Behaviors In Common Eiders (Somateria Mollissima Sedentaria) In The Western Hudson Bay, Tanner John Stechmann

Theses and Dissertations

Reproductive decisions of birds are shaped by minimizing predation while meeting physiological needs of parents and offspring. As a result, birds must make decisions about investment in offspring that allows them to maximize their overall fitness. This often drives nesting behaviors and can provide insights into reproductive success. Common eiders (Somateria mollissima) are thought to have high nest attendance (time spent tending the nest) and use substantial energetic resources during breeding. However, the specific behaviors at the nest of these birds are not well studied, with even less known about the Hudson Bay common eider (S. m. sedentaria). The objectives …

Evolution Of Object-Oriented Methods From The Reverse Engineering Of Programming Code, Pann Ajjimaporn

Theses and Dissertations

Many software development projects fail because of their inability to deliver the product in a timely and cost-effective manner, i.e. the software crisis. In a commercial airline company, a safety-critical system for preventing a “single-point of failure” needs to be developed and certified. To meet the project deadline an Agile approach was used in developing the first portion of the system. An appropriate software development methodology, i.e. reverse-engineering was then applied to the software system to develop method that would be used in system maintenance and evaluation.

The goals of this research study were to develop a segment of one …

A Wintered Mind, Cody James Deitz Jan 2019

A Wintered Mind, Cody James Deitz

Theses and Dissertations

A Wintered Mind is a collection of poems that explores the space and place of North Dakota through the eyes of an outsider. Having moved to North Dakota from Southern California, the author’s experience is initially one of disorientation and displacement, but through meditative engagement with the landscape and working to understand his place in it, the author finds a place rich in austere beauty. The speaker of these poems turns often to the language of Zen Buddhism, using the North Dakotan landscape as a lens to explore inner geographies. In turn, these inner geographies implicate the reader in their …

Mentally ill offenders are overrepresented in the criminal justice system and experience increased risks of cyclic incarceration and recidivism following release. Mental health court programs were introduced to offer court ordered treatment regimens and a team of legal and behavioral health professionals as an alternative to incarceration. The goal of mental health court research is to improve graduation rates and decrease post-program recidivism by identifying participant characteristics that significantly contribute to successful program completion. This study proposed an examination of the association between characteristics of mental health court program participants and their influence on the likelihood of graduation, termination, and …

Preventing Internet-Based Juror Misconduct: Investigating The Efficacy Of Prohibitive Jury Instructions, Emily Marie Carstens Namie Jan 2019

Preventing Internet-Based Juror Misconduct: Investigating The Efficacy Of Prohibitive Jury Instructions, Emily Marie Carstens Namie

Theses and Dissertations

To prevent the biasing influence of information obtained outside of the courtroom courts often issue instructions to jurors that limit or prohibit certain activities and the use of information during the trial and when making verdict decisions. (i.e., prohibitive instructions). However, research indicates that mock jurors tend to ignore such instructions. Additionally, advances in mobile technology give today’s jurors easier access to potentially biasing information obtained through the internet and digital communication (e.g., social media, blogs, email, and texting). This raises the question not yet addressed by extant research, whether jurors access this information during a case, even when judges …

Applications Of An Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle And Remote Cameras For Studying A Sub-Arctic Ecosystem, Andrew Barnas Jan 2019

Applications Of An Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle And Remote Cameras For Studying A Sub-Arctic Ecosystem, Andrew Barnas

Theses and Dissertations

The midcontinent population of lesser snow geese (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) has increased dramatically since the 1960’s due to changing agricultural practices in their southern wintering areas. The destructive foraging and continued population growth of lesser snow geese has resulted in cascading negative impacts on northern ecosystems. Studying remote sub-Arctic ecosystems is logistically challenging, but the advent of remote sensing technologies (such as drones and remote cameras) may assist ecologists in understanding snow goose ecology. Before these tools can be integrated into snow goose research programs, precursor “proof-of-concept” studies are required to validate tool use. The objectives of this study were …

Alpha1a-Adrenergic Receptor Modulation Of Epileptiform Activity And Seizures, Joseph Patrick Biggane Jan 2019

Alpha1a-Adrenergic Receptor Modulation Of Epileptiform Activity And Seizures, Joseph Patrick Biggane

Theses and Dissertations

The research herein aimed to increase our understanding about potential roles of adrenergic receptor subtypes in epileptic seizures and seizure-like (epileptiform) phenomena. Previous observations in our laboratory led us to hypothesize that the alpha1A-adrenergic receptor is a critical component of the modulatory role of the alpha1-adrenergic receptor, and more broadly, norepinephrine, on epileptiform and seizure activity. We utilized a combination of genetic and pharmacological manipulation to elucidate specific effects of the alpha1A-adrenergic receptor subtype on altering hyperactivity in models of epilepsy, both in slice and in vivo. This research sought to address three main research questions: (1) What are the …

Impact Of Stress On The Characterization Of The Flow Units In The Complex Three Forks Reservoir, Williston Basin, Aldjia Boualam Jan 2019

Impact Of Stress On The Characterization Of The Flow Units In The Complex Three Forks Reservoir, Williston Basin, Aldjia Boualam

Theses and Dissertations

The Three Forks Formation, as the lower part of the Bakken petroleum system is a complex reservoir with variable mineralogy, thin bed characteristics, and low permeability. Advanced logging tool and techniques are required to characterize and estimate water saturation (Sw), porosity, and mineralogy in this type of formations.

In this research, to overcome these challenges, we used three different methods to estimate Sw. The first model was based on an integrated petrophysical workflow developed to evaluate the reservoir quality. In the second approach, Sw was estimated from dielectric measurements, which is independent of resistivity. The two models showed good agreements …

Analyzing Changes In Rural Town Development And Spatial Morphology: A Case Study Of Lakota, North Dakota, 1908-2018, Kelli Fika Jan 2019

Analyzing Changes In Rural Town Development And Spatial Morphology: A Case Study Of Lakota, North Dakota, 1908-2018, Kelli Fika

Theses and Dissertations

The face of the many rural towns in the U.S. Great Plains region has changed dramatically. Many towns that boomed in the early 1900s struggle to survive or no longer exist, collectively contributing to the depopulation of the Great Plains. One way to study these changes and understand what influences a rural town’s ability to survive is through analyzing its spatial morphology. Spatial morphology includes looking at changes in roads, buildings, and building plots and how these elements work together to shape town form and function. Previous works have focused mainly on applying this technique to urban areas, but I …

Investigation Of Twin Cylinder Internal Combustion Engine Vibration, Jonathon Eaton Jan 2019

Investigation Of Twin Cylinder Internal Combustion Engine Vibration, Jonathon Eaton

Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a dynamic model of a twin-cylinder internal combustion engine, with focus on balancing the shaking forces and moments. The model will consider five geometry changes to effect second order vibration and nine different engine configurations to reduce first order vibration. An engine that has low vibration is extremely important for both longevity and usability. In order to know how to reduce vibration, we will first study the theory behind internal combustion engine vibration and how to calculate shaking forces and moments. We will follow with utilizing CAE tools, such as FEV Virtual Engine, to simulate engine dynamics. …

An Examination On The Progression Of Students Assigned To Developmental Or College Level Math At A Tribal Community College, Rhonda Blanche Gustafson

Theses and Dissertations

It has been agreed that postsecondary credentials are critical in contributing to the economic and global demand that the U.S. produces well-educated and credentialed citizens in or to ensure that the country remains economically competitive in the world. The problem is when admitted and after being assessed, older students and far too many graduating high school students are arriving underprepared for college-level work, and college readiness can often be the greatest obstacle to students’ success, in particular mathematics. With high dropout or stop-out rates in conjunction with low retention and graduation rates, American Indian student success is threatened.

Various explanations …
