Gemütlichkeit Verboten: The Influence Of World War I Anti-German Sentiments On Prohibition, Susanne Schenk Watts Jan 2020

Gemütlichkeit Verboten: The Influence Of World War I Anti-German Sentiments On Prohibition, Susanne Schenk Watts

Theses and Dissertations

The proximity and simultaneity of World War I and Prohibition pose questions of a shared and connected relationship. The current historiography falls short to connect these two seminal events and their impact on German-American communities. This study expands the existing literature by analyzing the reactions of two German-American communities (New Ulm, Minnesota, and St. Louis, Missouri) to Prohibition against the backdrop of anti-German sentiments of World War I. Using a diverse range of sources (anti-German war propaganda material, Anti-Saloon League posters, material from the United States Brewers’ Association and US Senate investigation, as well as German and English-language newspapers from …

Biometric modeling tools like Vida are reliable because they are based on mathematically observed biological truths, of which scientists can use to enhance the predictive power of ecological approaches in different areas. These simulation outputs can be used to demonstrate the ways a forest grows over time. The user can …

Mapping Land Use And Land Cover Change And Its Impact On Landscape Structure And Amphibian Functional Connectivity In The Prairie Pothole Region, Taylor Holm Jan 2020

Mapping Land Use And Land Cover Change And Its Impact On Landscape Structure And Amphibian Functional Connectivity In The Prairie Pothole Region, Taylor Holm

Theses and Dissertations

Monitoring land use and land cover (LULC) change and its effect on habitat availability and connectivity is crucial for species conservation and management. This is most efficiently accomplished at a sufficiently broad scale using remote sensing technology. Current approaches benefit from freely available data sources such as National Land Cover Database (NLCD), derived from 30 m Landsat imagery. However, temporal frequency and spatial resolution of NLCD may be insufficient for some applications. Specifically, 30 m resolution data may not detect small or narrow landscape features that may be important habitat for small animals such as amphibians. Other available data sources, …

Juror Perceptions Of Interview Quality From Child Victims With Autism, Megan Blackburn Jan 2020

Juror Perceptions Of Interview Quality From Child Victims With Autism, Megan Blackburn

Theses and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can affect multiple memory abilities, including episodic memory, source monitoring, and relational processing. The possibility of these memory deficits can affect how a child with ASD testifies in court if they are the victim or witness to a crime. These testimonies are especially crucial for Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) cases where one of the biggest challenges is the lack of physical evidence in most cases, which leads to an abundance of trials relying on the initial forensic interview with the victim and victim testimony. Due to this, and the increased chance of affected memory abilities, it …

Automation And Visualization Of Program Correctness For Automatically Generating Code, Jason Michael Hicks Jan 2020

Automation And Visualization Of Program Correctness For Automatically Generating Code, Jason Michael Hicks

Theses and Dissertations

Program synthesis systems can be highly advantageous in that users can automatically generate code to fit a wide variety of applications from high-level specifications without needing any low-level programming skills or knowledge of which type of data structures and algorithms should be used. NASA has developed and uses two of these systems, AUTOFILTER and AUTOBAYES. Though much is gained in terms of time and cost efficiency in the use of these systems, they suffer from an issue that is inherent in all code generator systems, the verifiability of the correctness of the generated code against the input specifications. Many times, …

Application Of Formal Specification Technique To Microgrid Representation, Maksym Tkach Jan 2020

Application Of Formal Specification Technique To Microgrid Representation, Maksym Tkach

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses formal specification techniques to analyze and model a microgrid. A microgrid is a small, local electrical grid, often supplied by a single generator, that can connect to the larger electrical grid, but can also disconnect from it, going into “island mode.” Thanks to the growth in renewable energy, microgrids represent a growing segment of the electrical power generation domain. And like any member of the domain they are safety-critical systems, meaning that even a small mistake in their implementation risks damage to life and property.Formal specification is a way to abrogate the risks of safety critical systems …

Design Of Spouted Fluidized Bed Computational Models For Advanced Energy Applications, Ryder Shallbetter

Theses and Dissertations

Fluidization process technology has been widely studied since its first commercial uses during the 1920s. Initially, developmental progress was slow as fluidized beds are complex in design and often hard to scale up in size. However, with the emergence of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), researchers were able to simulate wide ranges of fluidization and create new fluidization designs to help solve complex problems. This study aims to determine if CFD can be effective in designing spout-fluid beds with draft tubes for advanced energy applications. CFD has been employed for studying the fluidization characteristics, design, and optimization of spouted beds. However, …

The Effects Of Modulating Accommodative-Vergence Stress Within The Context Of Operator Performance On Automated System Tasks, Kyle Anthony Bernhardt Jan 2020

The Effects Of Modulating Accommodative-Vergence Stress Within The Context Of Operator Performance On Automated System Tasks, Kyle Anthony Bernhardt

Theses and Dissertations

Automated systems (e.g., self-driving cars, autopilot) can reduce an operator’s (i.e., driver, pilot, baggage screener) task engagement, which can result in mind wandering, distraction, and loss of concentration. Consequently, unfavorable performance outcomes, such as missed critical signals and slow responses to emergency events, can occur. Because automation reverts the operator to a “visual monitoring” role, the oculomotor accommodative-vergence responses (the oculomotor responses that maintain a single focused image on the retina) may play a vital role in human-automation interactions. Prior research has shown that individuals with deficits in the accommodative-vergence responses can exhibit inattentive symptoms (e.g., poor concentration) characteristic of …

Simulation Of Notch Driven Hydraulic Fracture In Open Hole Completion, Nejma Djabelkhir Jan 2020

Simulation Of Notch Driven Hydraulic Fracture In Open Hole Completion, Nejma Djabelkhir

Theses and Dissertations

Hydrocarbon production from unconventional plays, including shale oil and gas, has begun in the USA since nearly two decades ago and experienced a rapid growth. Horizontal drilling and multistage hydraulic fracturing (HF) are the prime technologies in development and stimulation of unconventional reservoirs. Open hole (OH) and cased hole (CH) are the primary completion methods used in unconventional reservoirs. OH compared to cased hole (CH) completion is more desired as it requires less operation cost and time while it results in more production due to larger area of wellbore exposure to the formation. However, OH completion is susceptible to near …

An Investigation Of Loss Of Control Eating Episodes And The Five Indicator Variables Of Loss Of Control Eating In A Non-Clinical Sample, Erica Goodman

Theses and Dissertations

Binge eating is common across both clinical and non-clinical populations; the diagnostic definition of binge eating has been scrutinized by extant literature in that findings have shown loss of control (LOC) to be more related to pathology than the amount of food consumed. The current study aimed to elucidate this notion further by investigating different types of LOC eating based on perception and amount of food consumed. College students (N = 227) completed self-report questionnaires assessing disordered eating, psychopathology, emotion regulation, impulsivity, quality of life, and self-esteem; 173 (76%) also completed an interview on typical and LOC eating in the …

Photometric Study Of Two Near-Earth Asteroids In The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Moving Objects Catalog, Christopher James Miko

Theses and Dissertations

Classifying asteroids by color and spectral features is important for understanding their compositions, linkages to meteorite types, and formation and evolution of the Solar System in general. Large data collection efforts such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) have allowed for more comprehensive studies of the asteroid population. However, the repeatability and therefore reliability of such observations comes into question, especially as Szabo et al. (2004) and Carvano et al. (2010) reported sizable fractions of asteroids observed by SDSS exhibiting taxonomic variability.

This research studied two near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) with just one observation each by SDSS: 2059 Baboquivari and …
