A Proposed Course Of Study For Prospective Secondary Education Teachers Of The Social Sciences In The Use Of Educational Media And Media Centers, Shelby Strand, Joe Abbott, Paulette Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that prospective teachers have a very limited knowledge of educational media and media centers, and that little is presently being done to correct this deficiency. The intent of this study was to develop a course of instruction which would give the prospective secondary teacher of the social sciences the knowledge and acquaintanceship necessary to enable him to make intelligent and effective use of educational media and the school media center.

The course was first planned in advance and then actually taught to a group of secondary education majors in the social sciences. A day-to-day account of the …

Input Order, Subjective Organization And Free Recall, John Earle Langhorne Jr. Aug 1970

Input Order, Subjective Organization And Free Recall, John Earle Langhorne Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable current research on memory has focused on the organization of subjects' recall. When the organizational characteristics of a stimulus list are not apparent, subjects will uniquely organize their outputs to facilitate recall. Both Tulving and Bousfield have developed statistics to measure this subjective organization in multitrial free recall experiments. These two measures have been shown to intercorrelate very highly. Substantial correlations are reported between these measures and recall.

During a previous study on subjective organization the recall data from each subject on each trial were scored in such a way that the ordinal position in recall of each word …

A Comparison Of Biological Characteristics Of Goldeye, Hiodon Alosoides (Rafinesque), In Garrison Reservoir, Donald Eugene Miller Aug 1970

A Comparison Of Biological Characteristics Of Goldeye, Hiodon Alosoides (Rafinesque), In Garrison Reservoir, Donald Eugene Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Age and growth and other biological characteristics of goldeye were compared at five widely separated stations on Garrison Reservoir in 1968 and 1969. All samples were collected with experimental gill nets fished near the surface. In 1968, goldeye comprised 88.56 percent of the total catch of 1,381 and in 1969, they made up 94.42 percent of the total catch of 2,230 fish. It was found that growth patterns of goldeye at the various stations were statistically different, which may be attributed to the differences in turbidity, temperature and possibly other limnologic conditions. Although statistical differences were found the actual differences …

A Study Of The Effects Of An Operant Program Applied To The Correction Of Frontal Lisps In Young Adults, Beverly Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if the S-Programmed Articulation Control Kit could be effectively used with young adults with trading stamps administered for reinforcement. The study also investigated the possibility of selecting peers to aid in the carryover of the desired /s/ response to nonclinical situations.

Four college students displaying frontal lisps were selected as subjects for this study. The therapeutic sequence of the S-Programmed Articulation Control Kit was administered to all subjects. Trading stamps were administered for reinforcement following correct responses. Following the administration of the therapeutic sequence of the S-Programmed Articulation Control Kit, each subject …

Support Or Nonthreat? An Investigation Of An Ambiguity In The Concept Of The Ego Support Value, Valerie Lynn Hansen Aug 1970

Support Or Nonthreat? An Investigation Of An Ambiguity In The Concept Of The Ego Support Value, Valerie Lynn Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

The investigation was designed to explore the concept of ego support. It was hypothesized that Wright's direct reward of ego support was not an unitary concept but a dual one, consisting of a support Component and a eomfort component. The investigation was divided into two parts: one part tested the independence of the two components; the second part attempted to determine if Target Persons independently designated as varying in comfort value and support value could be validly identified using the Acquaintance Description Form and a supplementary questionnaire. For Study II same sex, well acquainted pairs of subjects were asked to …

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko Aug 1970

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research and discussion has suggested that task ambiguity and experimenter-subject familiarity with the task are important factors affecting the generality and strength of the experimenter bias effect. These factors were conceptualized as inter-task ambiguity (inherent in the task) and two types of intra-task ambiguity (experimenter's familiarity with the task and subject's familiarity with the task). It was hypothesized that experimenter bias would: (1) be a significant factor in a more ambiguous task and not a significant factor in a less ambiguous task, (2) more likely be communicated to the subjects who were less familiar with the task, and (3) …

An Exploration Of Some Sex Differences In Agreement-Attraction Relationships, Bette Ann Havens Jun 1970

An Exploration Of Some Sex Differences In Agreement-Attraction Relationships, Bette Ann Havens

Theses and Dissertations

The investigation was designed to explore some sex differences in agreement-attraction relationships. The investigation was divided into two parts: one part dealt with a hypothetical stranger as a partner, the other part required a known acquaintance as a partner. Pairs of same sexed subjects responded to agreement measures and to a questionnaire describing aspects of friendship. The only result in Study I was that males who agree with other males on specific daily activity have higher levels of friendship ("voluntary interdependence"), than those who are dissimilar on specific daily activity. This was the only result found using a hypothetical person …

Communication Of Experimenter Expectancy As A Function Of The Internal-External Locus Of Control, Diane M. Harder Jun 1970

Communication Of Experimenter Expectancy As A Function Of The Internal-External Locus Of Control, Diane M. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

Several studies suggest) that experimenters may influence subjects in experimental situations and thereby obtain the predicted results (Rosenthal, 1966). Thus, the results obtained in research may reflect (1) independent vatfiabl.es, and (2) bi. resulting from the communication of expectancies by the experimenter.

Although numerous investiga^ ons have considered characteristics of experir nters and subjects that facilitate expectancy communication, the experimenter effect remains inadequately explained (Fode, 1967). It was felt that the Investigation of an additional variable, internal-external locus of ontrol, (Rotter, 1954) might contribute further informationL Past research suggested that internal subjects are better influencers (Pharos, 1965), and that they …

The Effects Of Sex And Levels Of Acquaintance On Risk-Taking In Groups, Richard A. Harper

Theses and Dissertations

Problem: This study had three purposes: (1) to test for differences in risk-taking among all male, all female, and mixed-sex groups; (2) to test for differences in risk-taking between low acquaintance groups and high acquaintance groups; and (3) to investigate whether or not familiarity with the risk-taking instrument, the Choice Dilemmas Questionnaire, affected risk-taking.

Procedure: The subjects used in this study were 144 male and female freshmen who were enrolled in Humanities 101 at the University of North Dakota in the fall semester of 1969. The subjects were randomly selected from the total male and female freshmen population who were …

Attitude Change In Relation To The Primacy-Recency Problem And Retention-Acceptance Factors, Barry L. Johnson Jun 1970

Attitude Change In Relation To The Primacy-Recency Problem And Retention-Acceptance Factors, Barry L. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

In attempting to persuade people, it is still not clear whether information presented first (primacy) or information presented last (recency) is more influential. Miller and Campbell (1959) found a primacy effect when they utilized a one week delay prior to obtaining a measurement with their post-test. They also obtained a measure of retention and found that this did not account for the attitude change. They agreed with Hovland (1957) that acceptance factors might be affecting the final opinion change.

This study attempted to clarify the role played by retention and acceptance factors on primacy-recency effects. A one week delay was …
