The Nature Of Some Bituminous Sands From Moffat County, Colorado, Jay Garske

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Humic acid is a possible cause of the staining found in many sands has been seemingly overlooked in the past. It is a definite cause, and very probably to a much greater extent than realized.

Two samples from the Browns Park Formation appear naturally brown in color, but are in reality near white. The brown color is a result of staining due mostly to humic acid and to a lesser extent by a small amount of petroleum present.

The Alberta Oil Sands, F. G. Schofield Jan 1957

The Alberta Oil Sands, F. G. Schofield

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The Alberta oil sands near Ft. McMurray, Alberta, have been estimated by many to contain at least 300,000,000,000 bbls of oil, and would therefore be classed as the largest potential oil field in the world. The oil sand deposit is considered to be non-marine in origin and consists mainly of very fine-grained, angular, quartz grains with the viscous oil acting as a binding agent. Lenticular beds of clay and extensive cross-bedding indicates deltaic conditions with intermittent flooding periods during deposition. Extensive research has shown that the problems of extraction, transportation, plant design and location are surmountable, and oil production from …

Letter From Barton Greenwood To U.S. Representative Burdick Regarding Per Capita Payments As Inquired By Mrs. E. V. Schanandore, October 29, 1956, Barton Greenwood

Usher Burdick Papers

This letter from Acting Commissioner of the United States (US) Bureau of Indian Affairs Barton Greenwood to US Representative Usher Burdick provides information addressing an inquiry from Mrs. E. V. Schanandore regarding the delay of per capita payments authorized by US Public Law 533. Greenwood informs Burdick that the Three Affiliated Tribes Tribal Council has reconsidered the enrollment of several applicants and that has delayed approval of the final tribal roll. Greenwood notes that since this distribution of funds will effectively comprise the last of the funds held in trust for the Three Affiliated Tribes, it's imperative that the rolls …

A Landslide Near Oslo, Minnesota, Roger C. Zejdlik

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

A landslide occurred on the bank of the Red River two and a half miles north of Oslo, Minnesota on the Minnesota side. The area involved in the slide compromises about 45,000 square feet. A mass-movement occurred which was vertical but largely horizontal. A block roughly 45 by 100 feet dropped on a skid plane between two related blocks which gave the effect of "graben" structure. Ath the same instant, however, a large mud bar roughly 150 feet long was pushed up in the river reducing the channel to about half its normal size. The cause of the slide was …
