Cognitive Dissonance As A Function Of Internal-External Locus Of Control, Dennis U. Spjut Dec 1970

Cognitive Dissonance As A Function Of Internal-External Locus Of Control, Dennis U. Spjut

Theses and Dissertations

According to cognitive dissonance theory engaging in behavior inconsistent with one's beliefs arouses dissonance. When individuals choose to engage in a boring and repetitious task they tend to positively reevaluate the task. Recent research (Pallak, et al. 1967) using an incidental verbal learning paradigm indicates that subjects who voluntarily commit themselves to performing a boring task reduce dissonance via enhanced task performance rather than through positive task reevaluation. Both the arousal of dissonance and its reduction can be expected to vary with individual differences. The present study investigated the individual differences of sex and internal-external locus of control as related …

Neuronal Coding Of Low Frequency Complex Stimuli At The Cochlear Nucleus And Inferior Colliculus Of Cat Brain, James L. Walker Aug 1970

Neuronal Coding Of Low Frequency Complex Stimuli At The Cochlear Nucleus And Inferior Colliculus Of Cat Brain, James L. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Articles have recently appeared by Erickson (1968) and Pfaff (1969) which propose that the study of the activity of a large population of neurons may contribute information about sensory coding which is supplementary to data obtained from single neuron studies. These authors propose that there are not enough neurons in the primary sensory pathways so that every stimulus can be represented by a separate neuron. They maintain that over-all measures of neuronal activity will be more fruitful in the study of sensory coding. The present study used such a measure (multiple unit techniques) to monitor the over-all discharge characteristics of …

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko Aug 1970

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research and discussion has suggested that task ambiguity and experimenter-subject familiarity with the task are important factors affecting the generality and strength of the experimenter bias effect. These factors were conceptualized as inter-task ambiguity (inherent in the task) and two types of intra-task ambiguity (experimenter's familiarity with the task and subject's familiarity with the task). It was hypothesized that experimenter bias would: (1) be a significant factor in a more ambiguous task and not a significant factor in a less ambiguous task, (2) more likely be communicated to the subjects who were less familiar with the task, and (3) …

The Conception Of Nationalism In Elementary School Children Of North Dakota, Robert A. Wheeler Aug 1970

The Conception Of Nationalism In Elementary School Children Of North Dakota, Robert A. Wheeler

Theses and Dissertations

The major purpose of this study was to determine when children can internalize concepts concerning home, state, and nation.

Educators and psychologists have not in the past worked in harmony as new curricula and methodologies have been developed. It was the intent of this research to provide statistical data and verbal comparisons on selected research questions to determine the effect of children's chronological age on the ability to generalize social studies concepts.

The following research questions were investigated:

1. Do North Dakota elementary students differ from Swiss Children investigated by Piaget in their concept of nation?

2. Do North Dakota …

Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon Aug 1970

Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon

Theses and Dissertations

The acclaim and recognition attributed to the musical performers of the eighteenth century are reflected in the title Bel Canto ascribed to this period. The contemporary musical scene reveals performances attempting to perpetuate the virtuosity of the performers of this period and to recapture their style. Unfortunately, the aura of legend and mystery surrounding the performance of music of this period frequently leads to confusion and frustration of both teacher and performer rather than to understanding. This study addresses itself to that problem.

Tosi and Mancini were active participants in this period and their theory, technique of performance, and pedagogical …

The Design Of A Life Support Circulation System For Hyperbaric Chambers, Kenneth P. Orchuk Jun 1970

The Design Of A Life Support Circulation System For Hyperbaric Chambers, Kenneth P. Orchuk

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to present the design of a Life-Support Circulation System for Hyperbaric Chambers as specified by the Themis Committee.

An important objective was to design a versatile circulation system which could be constructed from commercial products.

Circulation specifications were set by conditions required for the animals under observation in the hyperbaric chambers. Since these studies were to be conducted for prolonged periods, cost analysis warranted a closed system design.

The versatility of the system required investigation of several types of valves for satisfactory operation. Also, pressure monitoring controlled valves and pressure regulators had to be …

Communication Of Experimenter Expectancy As A Function Of The Internal-External Locus Of Control, Diane M. Harder Jun 1970

Communication Of Experimenter Expectancy As A Function Of The Internal-External Locus Of Control, Diane M. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

Several studies suggest) that experimenters may influence subjects in experimental situations and thereby obtain the predicted results (Rosenthal, 1966). Thus, the results obtained in research may reflect (1) independent vatfiabl.es, and (2) bi. resulting from the communication of expectancies by the experimenter.

Although numerous investiga^ ons have considered characteristics of experir nters and subjects that facilitate expectancy communication, the experimenter effect remains inadequately explained (Fode, 1967). It was felt that the Investigation of an additional variable, internal-external locus of ontrol, (Rotter, 1954) might contribute further informationL Past research suggested that internal subjects are better influencers (Pharos, 1965), and that they …

Attitude Change In Relation To The Primacy-Recency Problem And Retention-Acceptance Factors, Barry L. Johnson Jun 1970

Attitude Change In Relation To The Primacy-Recency Problem And Retention-Acceptance Factors, Barry L. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

In attempting to persuade people, it is still not clear whether information presented first (primacy) or information presented last (recency) is more influential. Miller and Campbell (1959) found a primacy effect when they utilized a one week delay prior to obtaining a measurement with their post-test. They also obtained a measure of retention and found that this did not account for the attitude change. They agreed with Hovland (1957) that acceptance factors might be affecting the final opinion change.

This study attempted to clarify the role played by retention and acceptance factors on primacy-recency effects. A one week delay was …

Differential Behavior On Skill And Chance Tasks As A Function Of Perceived Locus Of Control, Michael D. Paulson Jun 1970

Differential Behavior On Skill And Chance Tasks As A Function Of Perceived Locus Of Control, Michael D. Paulson

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was designed to examine differences in behavior that may exist between internals and externals on skill and chance tasks. Since internals should be more motivated in a skill task, it was hypothesized that they would show more trials to extinction, more frustration, and more arousal in acquisition and extinction on the skill task than externals. Since externals should be more motivated on a chance task, it was hypothesized that they would show more trials to extinction, more frustration, and more arousal in acquisition and extinction on the chance task than internals.

Subjects were pre-selected on the basis of …
