Geology Of Northwestern Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Nena Salomon
Geology Of Northwestern Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Nena Salomon
Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects
The geology of 465 square kilometers adjacent to the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers in northwestern McKenzie County, North Dakota was mapped and the following interpretations were made. During late Pliocene or early Pleistocene time, the Yellowstone River deposited gravel (unit A) containing chert and volcanic and plutonic rocks; the upper surface of the gravel is about 90 meters above the present flood plains of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers. Subsequent downcutting was interrupted by a glacial advance that deposited sediment (unit B) across the entire area. The glacier dammed the Yellowstone River, forming a lake in which …

Sensory Approach To Creative Writing: A Study Of The Effect Of Increasing The Number Of Types Of Sensory Stimuli Intended To Motivate Children To Write Creatively, Richard P. King
Theses and Dissertations
The Problem: The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine if increasing the number of types of sensory stimulation prior to a writing experience would help children to write more creatively and to write longer stories.
The secondary purpose was to investigate the use of the combination of an intelligence test score plus three measures of creativity as a predictor of creative writing ability.
The Procedure: The sample for this study consisted of randomly selected fourth, sixth, and eighth grade students (N = 300) of the Silver Bay area, a community of 4000 in 'Northeastern Minnesota. These subjects were …
Maze Acquisition In The Zinc Deficient Rat, Paige M. Lokken
Maze Acquisition In The Zinc Deficient Rat, Paige M. Lokken
Theses and Dissertations
Interest in the role played by trace minerals in brain development and the subsequent effect on learning is recent. Biochemically a great number of studies on zinc have been done, but in only one other laboratory have the behavioral consequences of a zinc-deficiency been looked at. The present study attempts to partially replicate the previous studies and to explore the behavioral effect of a zinc-deficiency in a different manner. In the postnatal study, dams were made zinc-deficient from the day of delivery until weaning of the pups occurred (21 days). Paired animals were fed the same amount of food as …
Distribution Of S-Adenosylhomocysteine Hydrolase, S-Adenosylhomocysteine Nucleosidase, S-Ribosylhomocysteine Cleavage Enzyme And Homoserine Dehydratase In Various Species, Robert D. Walker
Theses and Dissertations
Microorganisms, plants and the major organs from cold and warm blooded vertebrates ware assayed for the presence of S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase, S-adenosylhomocysteine nucleosidase, S-ribosylhomocysteine cleavage enzyme and homoserine dehydratase.
S-Adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase was found in all yeasts and plants assayed and in the livers of all cold blooded vertebrates assayed except the Polyodon spathula (Paddlefish). Liver extracts from all warm blooded vertebrates except the Odocoileus hemionus (Mule deer), Odocoileus virginianus (Whitetail deer) and Homo sapiens (human) were also found to possess S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase. This enzyme was also found in the spleens of the Ictalurus punctatus (Channel cat), Perca flavescens (Yellow perch) and …
Natural And Cultural Controls Of Water Quality Along The Devils Lake Chain, North Dakota, And Biological Characteristics Of The Two Terminal Lakes In The Chain, Carlene Ellen Woods Farmer
Natural And Cultural Controls Of Water Quality Along The Devils Lake Chain, North Dakota, And Biological Characteristics Of The Two Terminal Lakes In The Chain, Carlene Ellen Woods Farmer
Theses and Dissertations
Chemical analysis of water from 17 sites along the Devils Lake chain, starting with Mauvais Coulee and ending with East Stump Lake, and plankton and benthic analyses of East and West Stump Lakes, the two terminal lakes in the chain, were conducted from September 1969 to December 1972. A great degree of variation occurred along the chain with mineral content ranging from a minimum in groundwater to a maximum in East Stump Lake. Variations between lakes in the chain arise from physical characteristics such as isolation, permeability of basins, and reinundation.
Greatest mineralization r.as occurred in those lakes without outlets …
The Human Female Figure As An Affected Image In Modern Art, Gregory G. Chyle
The Human Female Figure As An Affected Image In Modern Art, Gregory G. Chyle
Theses and Dissertations
The title, The Human Female Figure as an Affected Image in Modern Art expresses the principal hypothesis of this study, but definition of terms included in this title is necessary to fully understand my intentions. The image of the human female figure depicted in a work of art is the subject of my concern. How the figure is represented, through various attitudes and appearances, assumed or implied, determines how the viewers interpretation of this image is affected .
Although a clearly defined time period is not critical to this study, Modern Art will be defined as that art falling into …

Ecology And Life History Of The Raccoon (Procyon Lotor Hirtus Nelson And Goldman) In The Northern Part Of Its Range, Wayne Fraser Cowan
Theses and Dissertations
A study of the ecology and life history of the northern raccoon Procyon lotor hirtus Nelson and Goldman, 193C) was conducted in southwestern Manitoba between June, 1967, and August, 1969. Information concerning growth, development, reproduction and population characteristics was gathered from carcasses of 293 raccoons of juvenile, yearling, and adult age. Seasonal activities and home ranges were determined by marking 81 mobile raccoons and 13 nestlings, and by recaptures of 27 of these. Movements of 11 raccoons were monitored electronically, A total 1,109 scats and 298 stomachs and colons were analyzed for food content and to determine seasonal requirements of …
Clustering And Subjective Organization Of Free Recall Learning, Sandra Gail Harrell Fenner
Clustering And Subjective Organization Of Free Recall Learning, Sandra Gail Harrell Fenner
Theses and Dissertations
Two concepts, clustering and subjective organization, have figured prominently in theoretical explanations of free recall learning. With lists composed of categorized words (e.g., animals, vegetables, occupations), subjects tend to order recall by categories, which tendency is called clustering. There is much experimental evidence for a relationship between clustering and amount recalled, as recall and clustering have been shown to increase with repeated presentations of the material. Curiously, there is some evidence that the degree of clustering seems to be uncorrelated with recall scores, that is, subjects who cluster strongly do not recall more words than subjects who cluster less strongly …

Sex Differences In Memory Measured By Signal Detection, Ronald L. Matthew
Sex Differences In Memory Measured By Signal Detection, Ronald L. Matthew
Theses and Dissertations
The theory of signal detection was used to determine sex differences in recognition memory for a social task using favorable, neutral, and unfavorable statements about men and women. Signal detection affords two measures: d' represents a measure of S's sensitivity (memory) and β a measure of his criterion or willingness to respond based on his memory.
Descriptions of people were scaled by ten men and ten women for degree of favorability. From these items, four lists were constructed and given to twenty male and twenty female undergraduates at the University of North Dakota. The independent variables used in the study …
The Development Of Mechanized Wild Rice Production In Minnesota, Jon N. Efteland
The Development Of Mechanized Wild Rice Production In Minnesota, Jon N. Efteland
Theses and Dissertations
Wild rice is an annual aquatic grass which inhabits many of the shallow lakes and sluggish streams of northeastern North America and is especially abundant in Minnesota. The only source of chis grain in the past was the hand-harvesting of natural stands.
The development of cultivation and harvesting techniques for wild rice during the 1960's has resulted in mechanized endeavors proving economically successful. Extensive bogs and lowlands exist throughout northcentral Minnesota which couj.d be converted into wild rice paddies, thus utilizing acreage which might otherwise remain agriculturally idle.
The Effects Of Intrauterine Shock On The Emotionality Of The Offspring In The Albino Rat, Mary B. Mehrer
The Effects Of Intrauterine Shock On The Emotionality Of The Offspring In The Albino Rat, Mary B. Mehrer
Theses and Dissertations
Recent research with animals indicates that stress applied during pregnancy can influence the emotionality of the offspring (Thompson, 1957; Fazzaro, 1971). The present study x^as designed to investigate the effects of escapable versus inescapable electric shock, administered during pregnancy, on the behavior of the offspring. Female Sprague-Dawley albino rats were mated and placed into three groups. Group I females were given daily sessions of twenty-five, escapable, 0.6mA shocks from Day 10 through Day 16 of pregnancy. Group II females were given the same amount of inescapable shock. Control subjects were placed in the shock apparatus for an equivalent amount of …

The Effect Of Information And Experience On Preference For Complexity, Stanley Richard Gunn
The Effect Of Information And Experience On Preference For Complexity, Stanley Richard Gunn
Theses and Dissertations
One area of research that has received a great deal of empirical and theoretical attention is preference for complexity. Two major conclusions may be drawn from a survey of the relevant literature in this area. First, there is a greater preference for the intermediate ranges of complexity than for the extreme levels, and secondly, preference for complexity is a function of the interaction of both stimulus and subject variables. The role of stimulus variables in preference for complexity has been repeatedly studied. This is also true of the subject variable "experience," which is usually defined in terms of the subject's …
Psychogenic Factors In Menstrual Symptomology, Glen Gruba
Psychogenic Factors In Menstrual Symptomology, Glen Gruba
Theses and Dissertations
In this study correlations were obtained between personality characteristics and menstrual manifestations in order to test the following psychogenic hypotheses regarding the etiology of menstrual symptomatology: (1) dependence, as a personality characteristic, is basic to the elaboration of moderate or severe menstrual symptoms, (2) a psychosomatic process, involving psychic control over somatic functions, underlies certain forms of menstrual symptomatology, and (3) menstrual symptoms, particularly as they are more pronounced, represent exacerbations of prevailing personality patterns.
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ, which contains eight menstrual symptom scales) were administered to 60 female university students …
