The Effectiveness Of Dusting As A Reinforcer For The Chinchilla (Chinchilla Lanigera), Kenneth R. Redman Aug 1974

The Effectiveness Of Dusting As A Reinforcer For The Chinchilla (Chinchilla Lanigera), Kenneth R. Redman

Theses and Dissertations

The Chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) has been observed to frequently roll in fine dust when it is available. It was hypothesized that such material would have strong reinforcing properties to a chinchilla which had been deprived of bathing in dust.

A straight alley runway was used with start latency and running speed to dust in the goal box as the dependent variables. Fifty-four chinchillas were randomly assigned to equal cells of a 3 by 3 matrix in which hours of deprivation and duration of reward varied. Each subject was given ten individual trials .

Results of a three-way analysis of variance …

A Comparison Of Communication Between Friends And Strangers Under Oral And Written Conditions, Raymond F. Venzke Aug 1974

A Comparison Of Communication Between Friends And Strangers Under Oral And Written Conditions, Raymond F. Venzke

Theses and Dissertations

The primary goal of the communication process is to have the addressee understand the communicator's expressed thoughts or ideas. Three factors which have Been shown to be important are: the relationship between the communicator and addressee (Ferguson, 19^9), the amount of feedback (Leavitt and Mueller, 1951)» and the communication channels used (Duncan, 1969).

The present study attempted to determine if friends communicate more effectively than strangers and if oral communication in a condition permitting nonverbal communication and feedback was more effective than written communication.

Five sets of ten pictures of males were given to each subject. One friend was designated …

The Treatment Of Anxiety In The Physically Disabled By Three Different Variations Of Systematic Desensitization, Robert H. O'Neill Aug 1974

The Treatment Of Anxiety In The Physically Disabled By Three Different Variations Of Systematic Desensitization, Robert H. O'Neill

Theses and Dissertations

Systematic desensitization has become a major technique for the direct removal of maladaptive anxiety. The basic method consists of pairing progressive muscle relaxation with the imagination of anxiety producing scenes. The scenes are arranged in a hierarchy with those scenes at the top eliciting little or no anxiety and those scenes at the bottom eliciting a great deal of anxiety. It has been hypothesized that the process of progressive muscle relaxation inhibits the development of anxiety in the presence of anxiety evoking stimuli and weakens the bond between those stimuli and the anxiety. Recently, several investigators have, suggested that any …

Movement, Reproduction And Ecological Relationship Of Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus (Rafinesque), In The Little Missouri River, North Dakota, 1972-1973, Gene Van Eeckhout May 1974

Movement, Reproduction And Ecological Relationship Of Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus (Rafinesque), In The Little Missouri River, North Dakota, 1972-1973, Gene Van Eeckhout

Theses and Dissertations

The biology and ecology of the channel catfish population in the Little Missouri River was investigated during the summers of 1972-1973. A total of 3142 catfish were caught; 3097 were marked and released. The 1972 catch exceeded the 1973 catch be approximately three and one-half times and was attributed to higher average stream discharge in 1972. There have been 257 recaptures to date. Over half (55.25 percent) of the recaptured fish showed no movement and were recovered within a short time; the abundance of local recoveries reflected activity within a limited area rather than a sedentary cohort of the population. …

The Effect Of Response Cost On Misarticulation, E. Heather Mackenzie May 1974

The Effect Of Response Cost On Misarticulation, E. Heather Mackenzie

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of response cost on percentage of error production with children who misarticulate.

Six elementary school children enrolled in articulation therapy were selected as subjects. Baseline measures of target phoneme error production were obtained by having the subjects construct sentences, using words presented to them verbally by the experimenter.

The effect on percentage of error production of two different ratios of token gain to token loss and positive reinforcement alone was investigated. Also, the effects during extinction of the three different contingencies were studied. During the treatment sequence, subjects were placed …

Physiological And Behavioral Effects Of Zinc Deficiency In Rats, Michael Charles Rowe May 1974

Physiological And Behavioral Effects Of Zinc Deficiency In Rats, Michael Charles Rowe

Theses and Dissertations

The studies presented below concern the physiological and behavioral effects of zinc deficiency. One group of dams were fed a zinc- deficient diet from the morning of day 14 to the morning of day 19 of the pregnancy. A second group was given the same amount of food as was eaten by their zinc-deficient counterpart (pair-fed) plus water containing 50 ppm zinc, thus they were not zinc-deficient but did experience starvation. A third group was fed the diet ad libitum and given the zinc-supplemented water. Dams' food intake, weight gain, food efficiency and pups per litter were determined. Pups' birth …
