Development Of Transalveolar Fibers In The Mouse Periodontium., Roger Bruce Johnson Jan 1981

Development Of Transalveolar Fibers In The Mouse Periodontium., Roger Bruce Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Transalveolar fiber development was studied in mandibles of albino mice, aged 12 days postnatal to adult. Light microscopic (LM), scanning electron microscopic (SEM), transmission electron microscopic (TEM), and high-voltage electron microscopic (HVEM) techniques were used. In LM, Wilder's reticular stain revealed transalveolar fibers in the crestal alveolar bone at day 14 and throughout the interdental septum at day 17. Van Gieson's method revealed transalveolar fibers in the crestal alveolar bone at day 19 and throughout the interdental septum at day 25. Differences in staining characteristics of developing transalveolar fibers were interpreted to be caused by persistence of surrounding glycosaminoglycans (GAG).In …

Theses and Dissertations

One bat species in North America, Hyotis luclfugus LeConte (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae), is well known biological 1y, but information concerning its ectoparasites is scattered and generally lacking for the north-central United States* The purpose of this investigation was to obtain information on the distribution, similarity, and abundance of arthropod ectoparasites between mtemity colonies of Little Brown Bats in northwestern Minnesota and northeastern North Dakota,

locations of bat colonies were requested frm various sources in 8 counties in the forest of Minnesota and 9 in the prairie of North Dakota throughout the summer of 1979. The age, sm t and reproductive condition …

A Study Of The Christian School Movement, Daniel M. Gleason Dec 1980

A Study Of The Christian School Movement, Daniel M. Gleason

Theses and Dissertations

The research problem is to examine the Christian school movement through an analysis of the literature that it has produced and case studies of five of its actual schools.

The significance of this study lies in the fact that during the past 15 years the field of Education has witnessed the widespread and rapid growth of this movement. Yet recent research had indicated that at present very little is known about it.

The purpose of this study is to explain and describe this Christian school movement: its philosophy, its view of U. S. educational history, and its view of the …

Carboxyl Methylation Of Non-Histone Chromosomal Proteins, Douglas P. Quick Dec 1980

Carboxyl Methylation Of Non-Histone Chromosomal Proteins, Douglas P. Quick

Theses and Dissertations

The in vitro methylation of non-histone chromosomal proteins (NHCP) was investigated in nuclei isolated from the brain, liver, and thymus of 6-8-day-old rats. After incubating the nuclei in the presence of 20 μM S-adenosyl-L-[methyl-3H]methionine(l Ci/mmol), the NHCP were separated from histones on hydroxylapatite, and fractionated further on SDS acrylamide slab-gel electrophoresis. After the gels were dried, autoradiography was used to detect 3H-methyl groups associated with these proteins. Four NHCP from the liver and thymus were methylated, while six methylated proteins were detected from the brain. None of the methylated proteins in these tissues corresponded with those from …

Autecology Of Atriplex Canescens (Pursh) Nutt. In Southwestern United States, Roger W. Ruess

Theses and Dissertations

Atriplex oanescens, a facultatively evergreen dioecious shrub inhabiting cold and warm winter deserts of western United States, was studied at four sites in the Great Basin. The species was commonly a co-dominant in communities throughout its distribution, and was frequently found with other members of the Chenopodiaceae and members of Compositae. It was found to resprout vigorously and experiments indicated that seeds from all sites germinated easily in wetted, well 3 aerated soil. The mean plant size ranged from 0.62±0.48 to 7.05±2.19 m . 3 -1 Density and cover ranged from 400 to 1.022 X 10 plants ha , and …

Ranching In Western North Dakota, 1887-1920, Scott R. Neevel Aug 1980

Ranching In Western North Dakota, 1887-1920, Scott R. Neevel

Theses and Dissertations

Several historians have dealt with the topic of ranching in the American West, but generally they have presented a broad overview of what took place over the entire western United States. Those who have dealt with ranching in western North Dakota generally have covered the early 1880s, but they have used the calamitous winter of 1886-1887 as a stopping point.

The period from 1887 on through the first two decades of the twentieth century was an era marked by recovery of the stock industry, the change from open to closed range, and the change from the old open range methods …

A Critical Appraisal Of James Whale's The Old Dark House, Christopher P. Jacobs Aug 1980

A Critical Appraisal Of James Whale's The Old Dark House, Christopher P. Jacobs

Theses and Dissertations

This study uses various critical approaches to analyze James Whale's 1932 film, The Old Dark House, and to some extent, the J. B. Priestley novel, Benighted, upon which it is based. The greatest difference between the two works is in their endings—the character Penderel dies in the novel but survives in the film version. The film also emphasizes the plot more than the characters, cutting much of the novel's character-developing monologues. This sacrifices, as well, much of Priestley's social commentary. The film nevertheless has more depth to its characters than many plot-oriented films of the period.

The Old Dark House …

"Night Journey To Meridian" And Other Stories, Lillie Marie Francis Aug 1980

"Night Journey To Meridian" And Other Stories, Lillie Marie Francis

Theses and Dissertations

"Night Journey to Meridian" and Other Stories is a group of interrelated short stories dealing with various psychic experiences of one major character, Stella. Each story is an independent unit, but the stories together show psychic development through the life of the character. The stories are arranged chronologically.

To Make A Prairie, Vonda Kay Somerville

Theses and Dissertations

Diaries, letters, and journals have come to be accepted as valid literary forms, offering personal insights into aii event or a v:ay of life which the more public accounts afforded by the history books have treated lightly or not at all, The settling of Dakota Territory about one hundred years ago provides an opportunity to present the personal perspectives of a number of pioneers as contained in their diaries, letters, and reminiscences. In particular, the women who iztioipated actively and fully in this venture have not been given due recognition for their contributions to the settlement of the plains, Historical …

The Winter Ecology Of The Gadwall In Louisiana, Stuart Lindsay Paulus May 1980

The Winter Ecology Of The Gadwall In Louisiana, Stuart Lindsay Paulus

Theses and Dissertations

Data on the disabled in textbooks revealed that more disabled males than disabled females were visible. More adults including senior citizens were depicted as disabled characters. Sixty-seven percent of the disabilities were physical in origin. Nearly 70 percent of the disabled characters were Caucasian. Characterization and language were generally positive.

Analysis of flock characteristics indicated paired and unpaired gadwall remained partially segregated and that pairs were dominant over unpaired gadwall. Pairs were involved in less agonistic activity and remained at greater distances from other birds than unpaired gadwall. Pairing cnronology and behavior suggested that although pairs arose from temporary associations, …

The Effects Of Prenatal And Postnatal Zinc Deficiency On Development Of Long-Term Memory In The Rat, Myra D. Heinrich May 1980

The Effects Of Prenatal And Postnatal Zinc Deficiency On Development Of Long-Term Memory In The Rat, Myra D. Heinrich

Theses and Dissertations

The following studies were designed to determine whether zinc deficiency, either prenatal or postnatal, could influence the time course of development of long-term memory in rats. Three nutritional conditions were imposed on litters of rat pups. One group (zinc deficient-ZD) was subjected to a zinc-deficient diet and deionized water. Members of a second group (pair fed-PF) were allowed to eat as much of the zinc-deficient diet as a certain member of the ZD group consumed on the previous day, along with zinc-supplemented water. This PF group was starved, since zinc deficiency typically causes anorexia. The third group (ad libitum-AL) was …

Sentence Components In Southeastern Tepehuan, Thomas L. Willett Jan 1980

Sentence Components In Southeastern Tepehuan, Thomas L. Willett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "In a complement paper on the Southeastern Tepehuan clause structure (Willett, this volume), the semantic and surface types of basic predications were discussed. The present paper begins to explore the inter-clausal relations of minimal locutionary and illocutionary force. It surveys the semantic and syntactic sentence types with primary reference to grammatical relations.

"The semantic propositional structures, along with their modal parameters and other semantic prosodies are discussed in Section 1. Then the basic syntactic forms of sentences and their related grammatical elements are outlined in Section 2, along with a mapping of the set of semantic sentence …

The Antigone Constraint, David H. Tuggy Jan 1980

The Antigone Constraint, David H. Tuggy

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

In this paper I will present a class of sentences that certain syntactic rules of English would be expected to produce, but which are ungrammatical. These sentences all involve the raising of a sentential NP and the subsequent application of some syntactic rule fo that sentential NP. To explain the ungrammaticality of these sentences, I propose a constraint called the Antigone Constraint, which prohibits two-storey rules from applying to clauses which have been raised.

The Letter To Father Janssens: The Synthesis Of Experience In Teilhard De Chardin And Its Implications For Educational Theory., Arthur John Spring Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The research problem is to examine experience as an epistemological concept in the writings of Teilhard de Chardin using the letter to Father Janssens, dated October 12, 1951, as focus for the study. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze Teilhard's theory of experience as that theory describes the growth and development of man's mind and defines the process by which man comes to know his own nature and that of the world. The study derives from the theory of experience six specific educational principles.Teilhard's theory of experience is identified as a movement of mind in which progress …
