Space, Medicine And Exobiology, Maureen Dunlevy May 1981

Space, Medicine And Exobiology, Maureen Dunlevy

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

As I conclude present research I look to the heavens and wonder. Perhaps none of us, in this lifetime, will understand all that lies there. We understand only fragments. The Space Shuttle has made knowledge more attainable. It promises to fill in the puzzle. Popular support of such projects varies with the degree of success, and has continued to vary since Werner van Braun first left Nazi Germany and convinced the United States Government of the need for a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). It is the responsibility of the believers in the wealth of space--its resources, lands, creatures …

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Human Will And The Learning Process: An Examination Of Stavrogin, A Character In Dostoevsky's The Possessed, Gurney D. Toews May 1981

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Human Will And The Learning Process: An Examination Of Stavrogin, A Character In Dostoevsky's The Possessed, Gurney D. Toews

Theses and Dissertations

The research problem is to examine the epistemological nature of the relationship which exists between the human will and the learning process using the development of a fictional character, i.e,, Stavrogin in Dostoevsky’s The Possessed, as focus for the study.

The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze Dostoevsky’s theory of will as that theory describes the educational growth and development of the individual and defines the process by which the individual comes to know his own nature and that of the world. The study derives from the theory of will specific educational principles.

Dostoevsky’s theory of will …

Introducing North Dakota Writers To North Dakota Readers, Kathie Anderson May 1981

Introducing North Dakota Writers To North Dakota Readers, Kathie Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

My study of the literature of North Dakota began ten years ago, when the topic for the annual writers conference at the University of North Dakota was the literature of the Northern Plains. At that conference I listened to Lois Phillips Hudson, Thomas McGrath, Richard Lyons, and other regional writers. Since that conference, I have been reading the literature of North Dakota and learning about the writers, and I have introduced the literature of North Dakota to my students in Grand Forks and Bismarck. My students, like the rest of us, have had the initial reaction, "Literature--Here?"

This study consists …

Oral, Written, And Read Syntax Of Forty-Six Learning Disabled Children, Carole Thompson Aitchison May 1981

Oral, Written, And Read Syntax Of Forty-Six Learning Disabled Children, Carole Thompson Aitchison

Theses and Dissertations

Problem: This study was designed to meet the need for further investigation of the relationships among oral language, written language, and reading. The following questions were investigated: What syntactical structures characterize the oral and written language of forty-six learning disabled children? What is the relationship between the structures used in the oral and written language of the forty-six subjects? What is the relationship between structures used in oral and written language and errors in oral language? Is the analysis system described by Dever (1978) useful for the purpose of analyzing the syntax of oral language, written language, and reading errors …

The Role Of Women In Education: Antecedents, Current Status, And Change Strategies, Lois J. Fisher May 1981

The Role Of Women In Education: Antecedents, Current Status, And Change Strategies, Lois J. Fisher

Theses and Dissertations

Statement of the problem. This historical-philosophical study examines the role of women in education. Currently women hold few positions of leadership or prestige in this profession. While women have long had an important role in education, that role has seldom been a high status position.

Purpose of the study. Understanding the role of women in education requires understanding the influences that have helped to shape that role. Those influences and antecedents are to be found in the subject-matter fields of history, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and education. The explanation and description of this background material provides a philosophical and theoretical base …

Endogenous Opiates: Review Of The Literature, Donald M. Goebel May 1981

Endogenous Opiates: Review Of The Literature, Donald M. Goebel

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Since the discovery of endogenous opiates in the early 1970's, researchers have investigated many aspects of this new mystery.- Structure, distribution, and physiological parameters are some of the areas of concern. As with any new area of study, research techniques are not fully refined and, therefore, discrepancies in experimental results do exist. The current literature does provide some answers while raising many new questions

Rabbit Heart And Vascular Responses To Carotid Occlusion And Peep With Denervation And Selective Adrenergic Blockade., Mark Robert Magnusson Jan 1981

Rabbit Heart And Vascular Responses To Carotid Occlusion And Peep With Denervation And Selective Adrenergic Blockade., Mark Robert Magnusson

Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical ventilation with inspiratory positive pressure and positive, end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) has been used to improve arterial oxygenation and to re-expand and stabilize collapsed areas of the lung in patients with non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema and adult respiratory distress syndrome. However lung hyperinflation by PEEP results in decreased cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. The interaction of the mechanical and the neuroreflex effects which alter cardiovascular function during PEEP have not been examined in a study designed to evaluate the components (arterial baroreflex, cardiopulmonary mechanoreflex, and mechanical) and their integrated effects. This study examined the cardiovascular responses to 2.5 cm H(,2)O PEEP …

The Influence Of Hormones, Alpha- And Beta-Adrenergic Effectors On Carbohydrate Metabolism In Isolated Rabbit Hepatocytes., Mark Anthony Yorek

Theses and Dissertations

Hormonal regulation of gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis was studied in hepatocytes isolated from 48 hr fasted rabbits. We found that these hepatocytes convert a variety of substrates into glucose at the following rates ((mu)mol glucose formed/30 min/10('8) cells): alanine, 2.24 (+OR-) 0.50;

Physical Dependence On Alcohol And Its Relationship With Divalent Cation And Carbon-Dioxide Concentrations, Blood Ph, And Intracellular Brain Ph In Laboratory Rats And Mice., Mark Allan Mitchell Jan 1981

Physical Dependence On Alcohol And Its Relationship With Divalent Cation And Carbon-Dioxide Concentrations, Blood Ph, And Intracellular Brain Ph In Laboratory Rats And Mice., Mark Allan Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

The role of extra- and intracellular acid-base status and divalent cations in the onset and severity of withdrawal from chronic ethanol intoxication was investigated in mice and rats. Body temperatures in both species were significantly decreased throughout withdrawal. While temperature corrected bicarbonate and extracellular pH, and brain Zn('++) concentrations were significantly increased in alcohol-exposed mice, all other parameters monitored in mice and rats indicate the lack of alkalosis or changes in Mg('++) or Ca('++) concentrations during withdrawal. The severity of withdrawal following chronic intoxication was not affected by either 5% or 15% CO(,2) therapy during the withdrawal period. Fifteen percent CO(,2) …

This project may affect fish distribution and enable fish species to be carried inadvertently …

Noun Phrase Components In Southeastern Tepehuan, Elizabeth R. Willett Jan 1981

Noun Phrase Components In Southeastern Tepehuan, Elizabeth R. Willett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "My purpose in this study is to explore ways in which speakers of Southeastern Tepehuan talk about persons, places and things, the semantic notions generally associated with nouns. Although in English we are accustomed to expressing such ideas as quantity, quality, orientation, or possession of an item with a noun phrase, we cannot assume that in other languages semantic categories will always correspond to the expected syntactic categories as we know them in English. For instance, in Southeastern Tepehuan adjectival ideas are always expressed as predicates. On the other hand, some surface dependent clauses which at first …

Alterations In Cerebellar Basket, Stellate And Purkinje Cell Dendritic Development Produced By Zinc Deficiency In The Suckling Rat., Christopher Lee Dvergsten Jan 1981

Alterations In Cerebellar Basket, Stellate And Purkinje Cell Dendritic Development Produced By Zinc Deficiency In The Suckling Rat., Christopher Lee Dvergsten

Theses and Dissertations

Rat pups suckled to severely zinc deficient mothers from birth were killed at 21 days of age. The cerebella were then examined by light and electron microscopy. Dendritic development was analyzed on Golgi-stained sections both qualitatively and quantitatively. Impaired pup growth, alopecia, hunched back posture and decreased femur zinc were seen in zinc deficient pups. Zinc deficiency impaired cerebellar development. The cerebellum was smaller and had fewer granule cells. The molecular layer was thinner and there was a persistence of the external granule cell layer. The normal cytoarchitecture of the cerebellar cortex was maintained in zinc deficient pups; however, basket, …

Mechanisms Of Glucose Utilization In Isolated Perfused Rat Livers., Katherine Ann Sukalski Jan 1981

Mechanisms Of Glucose Utilization In Isolated Perfused Rat Livers., Katherine Ann Sukalski

Theses and Dissertations

Net glucose uptake was studied in isolated perfused livers from fed and fasted rates in the presence of discriminant inhibitors of enzymes responsible for glucose phosphorylation. N-Acetyl-glucosamine, a potent inhibitor of glucokinase and hexokinase, significantly inhibited net glucose uptake in livers from fed but not fasted rats. This result could not be explained if glucokinase and hexokinase were the only enzymes responsible for glucose phosphorylation in the fasted state. Under some conditions glucose uptake was inibited by 3-O-methylglucose and by ornithine. Both of these compounds are inhibitors of glucose phosphorylation via the phosphotransferase activity of glucose-6-phosphatase but have no effect …

The Phenomenon Of Man: The Concept Of Evolution And The Epistemological Philosophy Of Teilhard De Chardin And Its Implications For Theory Of Biology Teacher Education., James Richard Cash

Theses and Dissertations

The research problem is to identify and examine the epistemological premises in Teilhard de Chardin's concept of evolution proposed in The Phenomenon of Man.The purpose is to identify and analyze Teilhard's theory of evolution in the context of the growth and development of the self-determined individual. The Teilhardian concepts utilized as the framework of this study are certainty of knowledge, momentum, perception, and the intellective process.Teilhard holds that the intellective process is mind's force of evolution. The evolving mind is self-determined and exercises its freedom via the scientific method. This predicates a balance of the cognitive, affective, and conative domains. …

Long Ago And Far Away: Distancing In Young Children's Stories., Beth Colleen Anderson Jan 1981

Long Ago And Far Away: Distancing In Young Children's Stories., Beth Colleen Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the concept of distancing within the oral stories of 36 children, ages three to five. Distancing was conceptualized, in part, as young children's increasing capacity with age to incorporate fantasy material exceeding the boundaries of their direct experience and to achieve self-other differentiation within the discourse form of stories. The study focused on three research questions: (1) What strategies do young children use to achieve distancing within their oral stories? (2) Do these strategies vary with age? (3) Is the ability to achieve distancing related to other measures of language fluency? The author created a distancing rating scale …
