The Effect Of Waste Stabilization Pond Seepage On Groundwater Quality Of Shallow Aquifers In Eastern North Dakota, David J. Brown
The Effect Of Waste Stabilization Pond Seepage On Groundwater Quality Of Shallow Aquifers In Eastern North Dakota, David J. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The use of stabilization ponds to dispose of municipal wastes has become popular with many North Dakota cities. When managed properly they are an efficient and economical method of waste disposal and may not adversely affect groundwater quality. In order to achieve efficient treatment, the ponds must be built in sediment that has permeability low enough to inhibit excessive percolation of wastewater into the subsurface. Some North Dakota cities have not met this basic requirement in the construction of their ponds. As a result, insufficiently treated pond liquids are allowed to reach the water table, potentially contaminating groundwater supplies. Three …
The Effect Of Oil-And-Gas Well Drilling Fluids On Shallow Groundwater In Western North Dakota, Edward C. Murphy
The Effect Of Oil-And-Gas Well Drilling Fluids On Shallow Groundwater In Western North Dakota, Edward C. Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
Upon completion of an oil-and-gas well in North Dakota the drilling fluid is buried in the reserve pit at the site. Reclamation of the drill site is expedited by digging a series of trenches which radiate out from the reserve pit, The majority of buried drilling fluid is ultimately contained within these 5-7 metre deep trenches. These fluids are commonly salt-based, i.e. they contain a con centration of 300,000±20,000 ppm NaCl. In addition, these drilling fluids also contain additives including toxic trace-metal compounds.
Four reclaimed oil~and-gas well sites were chosen for study in western North Dakota. The ages of these …

Low Molecular Weight Ligands And Trace Element Transport: A Study Employing Modified Gel Chromatography (Milk, Infant Formulas, Zinc)., Mark Thomas Martin
Low Molecular Weight Ligands And Trace Element Transport: A Study Employing Modified Gel Chromatography (Milk, Infant Formulas, Zinc)., Mark Thomas Martin
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to detect and identify low molecular weight (<10,000 Da) copper and zinc binding ligands in biological materials believed to function in trace element transport using modified gel chromatography (MGC) as the major detective method. MCG involves the gel filtration of a biological specimen on a column equilibrated with a chosen metal ion. In this way, the ligands can be separated from each other without being separated from the investigative metal ion. The ligands were separated by molecular weight on the gel matrix and the column eluent was monitored for metal binding peaks by the use of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Several ligands could be detected in a single sample and the detection limit was 0.1 (mu)mol for some common ligands.Milks and infant formulas were examined for the human species-specific zinc binding ligand thought to be essential to the acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) infant. Citrate was detected in all milks but picolinate was not detectable in any. Formula, human, and goat milk also contained detectable free amino acids. Human and bovine milk proteins also bound metal. No human species-specific ligands were detected. Alternative causes of the diet-dependent AE zinc deficiency and a mechanism for the molecular origin of AE are suggested.Viokase, a porcine pancreatic extract, has been found to be effective in the treatment of variant AE, an effect reportedly due to the presence of citrate or picolinate. Neither ligand was detectable by MGC although amino acid ligands were highly concentrated. Given the competitive nature of trace metal-ligand binding, some other aspect of Viokase probably ameliorates the variant AE symptoms.Ligands were detected in porcine intestinal mucosa. However, their potential as transport ligands depends on future studies to determine if the ligands were artefacts of sample preparation.Conjugated bilirubin, peptides, and amino acids were identified as ligands in human bile and are probably also present in porcine bile. The peptides were not individually identified but possibly play specific roles in normal copper excretion.

Characterization Of Selectively Modified Chymotrypsins And Their Specificity Towards Dipeptide Substrates., Nat Jorn Suwarnasarn
Theses and Dissertations
The 15 surface carboxyl groups in alpha-chymotrypsin first were modified with glycine ethyl ester (Gly-OEt) and taurine (Tau) at pH 4 using carbodiimide (EDC) reagent to give G(,15)-Chy and T(,15)-Chy, respectively. These enzymes (Chy-15) were remodified using norleucine methyl ester (Nle-OMe) as a tag in the presence of 8M urea. The analytical determination of the Nle-OMe tag was done by amino acid analysis and showed 1.5 and 2 moles of Nle per mole of T(,15)-Chy and G(,15)-Chy, respectively. Initial modification of alpha-chymotrypsin in the presence of 3M urea using Tau and Gly-OEt show 15.8 and 16 moles of Tau and …

Children's knowledge of the physical realities of death was explored through the use of an objective answer death concepts questionnaire. A demographic questionnaire was used to identify religious influences and exposure to death-relevant experiences which could influence the acquisition of factual information about death.Knowledge of death was expected to be related to grade level, cognitive level, IQ level, religious influences and death-relevant experiences. Children's exposure to death-relevant experiences was expected to begin at an early age and increase with grade level and with cognitive level. One hundred and thirty-seven children in kindergarten, second, fourth, and sixth grades were individually administered the …
Sancti Et Sanctae: Sex-Role Stereotyping In Mediaeval English Hagiography (Aelfric)., James Thomas Matthew Simmons
Sancti Et Sanctae: Sex-Role Stereotyping In Mediaeval English Hagiography (Aelfric)., James Thomas Matthew Simmons
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation deals with sex-role stereotyping in mediaeval English hagiography, in particular with all the Anglo-Saxon hagiographical poems, AElfric's Lives of the Saints, other selected pieces of Old English prose hagiography, and selected pieces of Middle English prose and verse hagiography, among them The South English Legendary. By looking at the ways in which the various authors present holy men and holy women, showing the positions and roles the saints had in both religious and secular society, the way they lived and the way they died, the dissertation shows that the sex-determined roles varied from author to author and age …

Phagocytic Response During Iron Deficiency., Kathleen Ann Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
Severe iron depletion has been associated with an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. The purpose of this study was to assess phagocyte function and resistance to infection with Staphylococcus aureus during not only severe, but also moderate and marginal states of iron depletion. An experimental animal model of iron deficiency was developed in BALB/c mice. The amount of dietary iron supplementation was varied to attain different levels of iron deficiency. Tissue iron stores (liver, spleen, granulocyte), hemoglobins, and hematocrits correlated directly to the level of dietary iron supplementation. Comparison of food consumption and body weights of iron-deficient and sufficient animals indicated …
