Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus: The Synthesis Of Success And Failure In Adrian Leverkuhn's Struggle For Truth As It Is Found In His Use Of 12-Tone Music And In His Application Of The Music-Philosophical Theories Of Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno, James F. Gurney
Theses and Dissertations
The two powers of Adrian Leverkuhn's life's struggle in Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus, his hunger for and failure to rationally obtain truth as well as his unabating truth-ignoring need for artistic production, eventually cause a tremendous dissonance within him which ultimately leads to his insanity. This struggle, though destined for dissonant failure, nevertheless becomes a successful expression of Leverkuhn's oneness both with all humanity's struggle for truth and with modern humanity's consciousness of its failure to find truth. Leverkuhn's lifelong struggle is best represented in the novel through Leverkuhn's musical compositions and in them, through his fictional development and use …
Personality, Sex, And The Neuropsychology Of Attention, Peter A. Williamson
Personality, Sex, And The Neuropsychology Of Attention, Peter A. Williamson
Theses and Dissertations
The influences of sex and personality on attentional style were examined in two neuropsychological studies in which perfor mance and event-related potentials (ERP's) were employed. Pribram and McGuinness1 (1975) conceptions of Activation and Arousal were recast in a lateralized framework in which the former was seen as characteristic of left hemisphere function while the latter was identified more closely with the right hemisphere. Four equal groups of nine subjects were selected on the basis of sex and ex treme extraversion scores (I-E), while controlling for neuroticism, to participate in two lateralized attentional tasks. The first, a vigilance task designed to …

Terrain, Climate, And Vegetation In The Badlands Of The Little Missouri River In North Dakota, Paula Himmelheber Lee
Terrain, Climate, And Vegetation In The Badlands Of The Little Missouri River In North Dakota, Paula Himmelheber Lee
Theses and Dissertations
The climate of southwestern North Dakota is typical for the Great Plains of the central and west-central United States. The Rocky Mountains influence the climatic condi tions by providing an orographic obstacle to air circula tion. Statistical analysis through correlation and regres sion of 30 years of climatic data from southwestern North Dakota and nearby stations in South Dakota and Montana is consistent with climatic relationships that have been de fined by previous research. The influence of the Rocky Mountains is quantified through a variable that represents the linear distance from each weather station to the front range.
The natural …
An Evaluation Of Bacterial Flagella Staining Procedures, Dan Dalan
An Evaluation Of Bacterial Flagella Staining Procedures, Dan Dalan
Theses and Dissertations
Five currently used flagella stains and staining procedures have been studied and evaluated. A staining method that is simplest, most reliable, and highly reproducible, especially for beginning students and technicians has been assembled and recommended.
Four important variables necessary for successful flagella staining were stressed. These variables are: growth of organisms, smear pre paration, staining procedure, and reagent stability.
Two important procedures which are part of some, but not all of the flagella staining methods studied are strongly recommended. One is the practice of enclosing a smear with wax pencil and adding a known, constant volume of dye. An effective …
Cognitive Ability And Cognitive Style In The Comprehension And Expression Of Emotion, Carole H. Hayne
Cognitive Ability And Cognitive Style In The Comprehension And Expression Of Emotion, Carole H. Hayne
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the ability to comprehend and express affect by non-verbal means. Darwin (1872) suggested that the non-verbal communication of emotion had a biological basis. Hughlings-Jackson (1879) emphasized the relationship between cerebral functioning and the ability to communicate affect. Neuropsychological research suggests that a major neuronal network located in the right hemisphere supports non-verbal communication. The evidence indicates the localization of expressive skills in the anterior cortex and comprehensive skills in the posterior cortex.
In the present study 31 behavioral tasks comprised a scale to assess the ability to communicate affect by non-verbal means. The tasks assessed the comprehension …

Discourse Analysis Of A Michif Narrative, Breck S. Speers
Discourse Analysis Of A Michif Narrative, Breck S. Speers
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis offers a transcription and translation of a Michif narrative. Michif is a hybrid language consisting of French noun phrases and Cree verb structures. After the translation of the text, a structural analysis of the text is given based on textual analysis techniques proposed by Roger Schank and Robert Abelson (1977) and Ellen Prince (1979).
The Michif narrative was elicited from a resident of San Clara, Manitoba, Canada, and was transcribed with the help of native Michif speakers involved with the Summer Institute of Linguistics at the University of North Dakota. The concept of the script, a stereotypic chain …

An Investigation Of Semantic Invariance In Human Speech, David Burton Tarr
An Investigation Of Semantic Invariance In Human Speech, David Burton Tarr
Theses and Dissertations
The present investigation addresses the hypothesis of phonetic symbolism in human speech. As a psycholinguistic and epistemological concept, the phonetic symbol is understood to be a structural a priori in sound which correlates with the semantic properties of physiognomic, muscular tension. An extension of this hypothesis is the assumption that phonemes without conventional meaning in a language can approximate semantic equivalence of ordinary words under appropriate experimental conditions.
This dissertation explores the psychodynamic parameters of phonetic symbol access. Specifically, it makes use of a variety of clinical and experimental tools to tap instinctual processes which could conceivably contribute to phonetic …

Ergativity And Transitivity In Paumarí, Desmond C. Derbyshire
Ergativity And Transitivity In Paumarí, Desmond C. Derbyshire
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "Paumarí, a Brazilian language belonging to the Arawaken family, has a split case-marking system of a type which, so far as I am aware, has not been previously reported. The ergative system occurs in clauses having the basic word order pattern, or in clauses where a significant part of the basic pattern is preserved. The nominative-accusative system occurs in clauses where other word orders are used. For the purpose of this paper, by "basic word order" I mean the pragmatically least marked and statistically most frequent order.
"Dixon (1979, 79-80) explains all split case systems in semantic …

Aztec Causative/Applicatives In Space Grammar, David H. Tuggy
Aztec Causative/Applicatives In Space Grammar, David H. Tuggy
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "There are in Aztecan generally a number of verbal suffixes which function as causatives or as applicatives. (Applicatives often translate by "dative movement" structures in other languages.) Some of these suffixes are usually causatives, others are usually applicatives, but all function at times in both categories. All also function as verbalizing suffixes, mostly on nouns but often on adjectives and postpositions as well. in each case the suffix has a constant phonological shape and constant morphological properties such as position-class in the verb, conditioning of stem-formation rules, pattern of tense-formation, etc., which make it desirable to treat …

On The Variants Of Newari Vowels: A Study In Phonological Non-Alignment, Lindsay Criper Friedman, Tej Ratna Kansakar, Jyoti Tuladhar, Austin Hale
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "Newari vowels display marked individualistic tendencies. There is a prominent asymmetry in the relation between long and short vowels in that there are six short vowels, /i, e, ā, a, o, u/, but eight long vowels, /ii, ee, ae, āe, aa, āā, oo, uu/. More interesting for this study, however, is the fact that no two of these vowels respond to exactly the same set of low level phonetic rules, or are influenced in manifesting one phonetic exponent or another by the same set of phonological environments. In this paper we explore these phonetic differences in the …
Typological Disharmony And Ergativity In Guajajara, Carl H. Harrison
Typological Disharmony And Ergativity In Guajajara, Carl H. Harrison
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "The purpose of this paper is to present some results of research on Guajajara (G), a Tupi-Guarani language of Northeast Brazil, with the hope of contributing some facts of interest to universal grammarians.
"Guajajara is unique in that due to its particular combination of morphological and syntactic traits, it is inconsistent in terms of commonly discussed typological parameters.
"Some features of interest are: 1. Double cross-referencing of core NPs. a. General accusativity in cross-referencing pronominal clitics attached to the end of the clauses. b. Mixed ergativity with accusativity in the cross-referencing pronominal verb prefixes.
2. Registration in …
