Exiles From Spain's Civil War: Case Studies Of Two Literary Figures, Olga Colbert Dec 1989

Exiles From Spain's Civil War: Case Studies Of Two Literary Figures, Olga Colbert

Theses and Dissertations

The Spanish civil war and the political regime that resulted from it deprived Spain of the presence and immediate inspiration of a large group of remarkably creative individuals. Some of the best minds of a literary generation left their country to protest the political situation and to continue to be true to their inner voices. Besides numerous personal and professional adjustments, hese people were faced with a tremendous sense of uprooting hat inevitably accompanies the experience of exile.

Only a minority among those exiles settled in the nited States, due to isolationist policies and to stringent minigration legislation. Those who …

The Interactive Effects Of Caffeine And Estrogen On Memory For Word Lists, Mary Ellen Arnold Dec 1989

The Interactive Effects Of Caffeine And Estrogen On Memory For Word Lists, Mary Ellen Arnold

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has yielded conflicting results regarding the effects of caffeine on word list recall. Erikson et al. (1985) found that caffeine impaired recall among females when words were presented at a slow rate. Arnold et al. (1988) observed a facilitory effect of caffeine on the recall, after practice, of females tested during Days 1-5 of the menstrual cycle. Research on cognitive task performance among females suggests that performance varies according to the phase of menstrual cycle. Medical research demonstrates a relationship between estrogen and caffeine metabolism. In this study, it was hypothesized that females' recall of word lists would …

The Effects Of Alcohol On Semantic Memory, Norman A. Kerbel Dec 1989

The Effects Of Alcohol On Semantic Memory, Norman A. Kerbel

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have shown that the effects of alcoholic intoxication on memory result from a functional decrease in capacity of working memory (e.g., Petros, Kerbel, Beckwith, Sacks, & Sarafolean, 1985). However, other studies looking at speeds of retrieval of information from long-term memory have brought this conclusion into doubt (Moskowitz & Roth, 1971). The present study presented subjects with decisions to be made regarding word pairs. Three conditions were used, each requiring different amounts of information to be accessed from long-term memory.

Sixty-six male college students, between the ages of 21 and 29 years, were divided into two groups. One …

An In Vitro Analysis Of Melanoma Cell Attachment To Isolated Glomerular Basement Membranes., Ronald K. Jyring Oct 1989

An In Vitro Analysis Of Melanoma Cell Attachment To Isolated Glomerular Basement Membranes., Ronald K. Jyring

Theses and Dissertations

Penetration of blood vessel basement membranes (BMs) by metastatic cells apparently proceeds by a three step process involving attachment, degradation, and migration. In the current study, isolated glomerular BMs (GBMs) were used as model substrates for studying cell attachment to BMs.Murine and bovine gomeruli were isolated by differential sieving of homogenized renal tissues. GBMs were prepared by treating glomeruli with detergents and enzymes. This was facilitated by using "sieving chambers" which prevented tissue loss during the detergent extraction procedure. The ultrastructure of detergent isolated murine and bovine GBMs was similar to other species, although they had a greater tendency to …

The Writing Processes Of Theodore Taylor And Jane Yolen, Jean Myers Stevenson

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a description of the writing processes of two professional writers for children and young adults, Theodore Taylor and Jane Yolen. Theories concerning the writing process and implications for classroom use, as expressed by Cowley, Smith, Murray, Flower and Hayes, Graves, and Calkins, are the basis for an examination of the working papers for Taylor's The Cay and Rocket Island and Yolen's The Bird of Time and The Sultan's Perfect Tree which have been donated to the Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota.

The working papers include notes, drafts, revisions, galley and foundry proofs, and correspondence, although …

The Interaction Of Multifunctional Glucose-6-Phosphatase With Select Metabolites., Brian Lee Robbins Jul 1989

The Interaction Of Multifunctional Glucose-6-Phosphatase With Select Metabolites., Brian Lee Robbins

Theses and Dissertations

Glucose-6-phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.9) occupies a strategic metabolic location in hepatic glucose metabolism, is multifunctional in nature, consists of multiple components, and exhibits unique kinetic characteristics. These properties of glucose-6-phosphatase make it a likely candidate for regulation of glucose metabolism. The effect of selected intermediate metabolites on the phosphotransferase and phosphohydrolase activities of glucose-6-phosphatase was investigated with intact and detergent-disrupted microsomal preparations. Detergent treatment exposed the catalytic unit of microsomal preparations. The interaction of the metabolite with the catalytic unit was assessed in these preparations. The study of metabolites with the glucose-6-phosphatase of intact microsomes served to characterize the interactions of the …

Synthesis Of Modified Nucleotides To Incorporate Into Oligonucleotides., Jeffrey Allan Jenson Jul 1989

Synthesis Of Modified Nucleotides To Incorporate Into Oligonucleotides., Jeffrey Allan Jenson

Theses and Dissertations

The use of modified analogs of 2$\sp\prime$-deoxyuridine as probes that incorporate into oligonucleotides are discussed. These probes can be useful in many areas including diagnostics, sequencing and therapeutics, and will be discussed later in more detail. The development of DNA probes is important in the diagnostic area because the use of the probes can diminish dramatically the time needed to diagnose an infection (from weeks to hours). Use of DNA probes for sequencing the genomes of hereditary diseases can help find cures. Fighting infectious disease by blocking replication of the virus using DNA probes is a therapeutic use. These are only …

Ecology Of Gray Partridge In North Dakota, John Patrick Carroll May 1989

Ecology Of Gray Partridge In North Dakota, John Patrick Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

I studied gray partridge (Perdix perdix) ecology in north-central North Dakota during 1985-87. The primary goals of this study were to identify habitats important to gray partridge survival and nesting, and to provide baseline data on partridge ecology in North Dakota. I captured and radio-tagged 100 gray partridge, mainly during winter. Individuals were tracked by a vehicle-mounted telemetry system until August of each year. Home ranges, movements, habitat use, and survival were calculated by using the telemetry locations. Winter home ranges averaged 117 ha, and were larger than previously reported in North America. Important habitats used by radio-tagged partridge during …

Processing Capacity Expended By Skilled And Less Skilled College Readers While Reading Narrative And Expository Text, Brenda M. Folstrom May 1989

Processing Capacity Expended By Skilled And Less Skilled College Readers While Reading Narrative And Expository Text, Brenda M. Folstrom

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The present study examined prose processing In skilled and less skilled college readers. Subjects read 15 expository stories at their own rate one Idea unit at a time. Subjects were instructed to respond as quickly as possible to a tone that periodically occurred throughout the text. The tones occurred either 500 milliseconds or 1000 milliseconds after an Idea unit came on the screen. The passages varied In their length and level of difficulty. The findings of the present study indicate that less skilled readers required more cognitive capacity when processing the text than skilled readers, and that the largest amount …

The Primary Cell Culture, Morphological Characterization, And Analysis Of Proliferative Potential Of Ventricular Myocytes From The Adult Newt, Notophthalmus Viridescens., John Michael Tate

Theses and Dissertations

Previous work has demonstrated that adult newt myocytes possess a proliferative ability in response to an experimentally-induced injury, in vivo. The work outlined in this study has been an effort to develop an additional in vitro model to study proliferative events in the adult cardiac myocyte.Ventricles were minced and then enzymatically dissociated in a Ca$\sp{++}$ and Mg$\sp{++}$-free salt solution containing 0.5% trypsin and 625 U/ml of CLS II collagenase for 8 to 10 hours at 25$\sp\circ$C. Enzyme digests were preplated and then cultured in either serum-free or serum-supplemented modified Liebovitz's medium for up to 30 days.Light and transmission electron microscopic …

Identification And Characterization Of Ixodid Tick Antigens Involved In Acquired Host Resistance To Infestation., Valeria Mildred Howard Papes Apr 1989

Identification And Characterization Of Ixodid Tick Antigens Involved In Acquired Host Resistance To Infestation., Valeria Mildred Howard Papes

Theses and Dissertations

Cattle and laboratory animals display acquired immunologically based resistance to ixodid tick feeding. Antibody, cell mediated, and complement dependent effector mechanisms are involved in this immunological response. The current study was concerned with the isolation and characterization of ixodid tick molecules involved in the host immune response to infestation.Ixodid ova extracts were fractionated by membrane ultrafiltration and Sephadex G 200 gel permeation chromatography. The whole ova extract and defined molecular weight fractions obtained were analyzed for their ability to interact with immune effector elements of tick resistant hosts.Amblyomma americanum whole ova extract induced both immediate and delayed skin hypersensitivity in …

The Relationship Between Trait Anxiety And Organization In Memory., Doug Gene Heck Feb 1989

The Relationship Between Trait Anxiety And Organization In Memory., Doug Gene Heck

Theses and Dissertations

These two studies examined the influence of trait anxiety upon organization in memory. High and low trait-anxious subjects who were either high or low in verbal ability listened to tape-recorded word lists and prose passages at different levels of difficulty. Immediately after listening to each word list, the subjects were asked to orally recall all they could remember, while their written recall was used for the passages. The results revealed no trait anxiety effects, with the exception of high trait anxiety being associated with greater total recall of words. A weak positive correlation existed between trait anxiety and total recall in …

Verbal Memory Changes In Elderly Nursing Home Residents With Suspected Senile Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type., Scott Mark Bodine

Theses and Dissertations

Forty eight elderly subjects who were residents of nursing homes and retirement centers participated in the study which was designed to evaluate verbal memory functioning in presumed Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (SDAT). Half of the subjects exhibited significant decline in memory as evidenced by raw scores of 50 or below on the Wechsler Memory Scale. Declines in memory were not attributable to depression, cerebrovascular accident, alcohol abuse or severe mental disorders. The demented group performed lower than the group with intact memory on a measure of verbal ability. The memory tasks employed were free recall of word lists, …

The entire Fall 1987, freshman class of Creighton University School of Dentistry participated (N =.68). Fifty-eight Subjects completed the project. Students were randomly assigned to a treatment, PRT (N = 12) or SIT (N = 17), or to one of two control groups, placebo (N = 13), or no treatment (N = 16). The placebo consisted of a once-only lecture on theory of stress. All subjects were measured for stress related components using paper and pencil …

The Nahuatl Verb Maka: A Cognitive Grammar Analysis, David H. Tuggy Jan 1989

The Nahuatl Verb Maka: A Cognitive Grammar Analysis, David H. Tuggy

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "The verb stem maka 'give' in Nahuatl is unusual in its range of options with respect to transitivity. Like all transitive verb stems, it regularly occurs with an object and in fact must do so, but it also appears in an unusually large number of constructions in which it has two objects. I would like to examine these constructions within the framework of Cognitive grammar (CG) (Langacker 1987)."
