Yolk Steroid Hormones In Turtle And Chicken Eggs., Pamela Kay Elf Jan 2002

Yolk Steroid Hormones In Turtle And Chicken Eggs., Pamela Kay Elf

Theses and Dissertations

In oviparous vertebrates, maternal contributions to yolk material in the form of steroid hormones are thought to be responsible for several growth and behavior effects in the offspring. We initiated a series of experiments to determine the dynamics of yolk hormones in two species with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD ), the snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina, and painted turtle,Chrysemys picta, and one species with genetic sex determination (GSD), the Leghorn chicken,Gallus domesticus. The objectives o f these studies were to determine species and individual female differences in initial yolk steroid hormone levels and to monitor any changes in these levels during …

Writing Gojri: Linguistic And Sociolinguistic Constraints On A Standardized Orthography For The Gujars Of South Asia, Wayne E. Losey Jan 2002

Writing Gojri: Linguistic And Sociolinguistic Constraints On A Standardized Orthography For The Gujars Of South Asia, Wayne E. Losey

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This study presents descriptions of the phonology and morphology of the two major dialects of Gojri spoken in Pakistan, and compares them with the Gojri spoken in Punch District of Indian-administered Kashmir. In light of this comparative data and the implications for Gojri-to- Urdu literacy, it evaluates various orthographic conventions currently used by leading writers and institutions. It explores Urdu-based spellings which are linguistically sound and otherwise conducive to transitional literacy, and which lend themselves to orthographic standardization across the east-west dialect continuum. It also includes an extended treatment of the challenge of representing Gojri tone.

This study will provide …

The Structural Status Of Bora Classifiers, David J. Weber Jan 2002

The Structural Status Of Bora Classifiers, David J. Weber

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

I claim that Bora classifiers have the structural status of (bound) nouns, based on facts like the following:

  • Some classifiers also occur as independent nouns (possibly with minor phonological differences).
  • Classifiers have the referential properties typical of nouns. Like typical nominals, they denote classes of objects and may refer to a member of the class they denote. They are never used to attribute properties to another referring expresssion.
  • Classifiers have the distribution typical of nouns: they may be a clausal subject, they may be modified by a relative clause, they may have a prepositional complement, and so forth.

And classifiers …

The Effects Of Magnetic Insoles On Lumbar Flexion, Kari Braaflat, Becky Cox, Angela Delacruz, Heather Skarsgard

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Magnets have been used for therapeutic purposes for hundreds of years. Today, magnetic devices and other alternative therapies are more popular than ever among the general public. The effect of these magnetic devices is dependent on several variables including strength, depth of penetration, placement, time exposed to the magnetic field, and polarity. There are many proposed theories on how magnets affect the body, but there is little research to support them. One of the theories proposed is that magnets alter connective tissue elasticity and allow greater range of motion (ROM). Additional research needs to be conducted to validate or negate …

The Effects Of Boron On The Range Of Motion Of Dexterity Related Joints: A Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Nicole Herda, Jessica Woehl Jan 2002

The Effects Of Boron On The Range Of Motion Of Dexterity Related Joints: A Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Nicole Herda, Jessica Woehl

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive, destructive and chronic, inflammatory disease of the joint synovium. Signs and symptoms include pain, limited range of motion, swelling, and tenderness, which may progress to deformity. These manifestations may limit dexterity, independent living, and the overall well being of an individual. Living with daily restrictions proves to be a psychologically distressing experience.

An increase in the dietary boron level of laboratory rats has shown to have a positive effect on the range of motion in their involved joints. This concept was tested on a human subject at the United States Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition …
