The Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of The Sentinel Butte Formation Around Beicegel Creek, Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Joseph L. Stone Aug 2002

The Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of The Sentinel Butte Formation Around Beicegel Creek, Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Joseph L. Stone

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 580 ft of the Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene) is exposed within this study area. A stratigraphic and sedimentologic study of these exposures was done in order to gather new information about the formation, to interpret paleodepositional environments, and to possibly develop an overall depositional model.

Stratigraphic analysis identified four major sand units within the study area, separated by intervals of mudstone and lignite. The lowermost sandstone unit is identified as the Basal Sandstone (Royse 1967). All of the sandstone units exhibit sedimentary structures that suggest a fluvial source for their deposition. They tend to be laterally consistent and when …

Impact Of Corticosterone And Zinc Deprivation On Memory And Hippocampal Functioning, Patricia Lynn Moulton Aug 2002

Impact Of Corticosterone And Zinc Deprivation On Memory And Hippocampal Functioning, Patricia Lynn Moulton

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of long-term exposure to corticosterone (CC) and chronic zinc-deprivation (ZnD) on memory performance and hippocampal damage in rats. Previous work has examined the impact of exposure to CC or the impact of ZnD, but no previous work has examined the combined impact on memory performance. Previous work suggests that chronic exposure to CC or ZnD results in hippocampal damage and memory deficits.

The present study utilized a broader range of memory tests than previous studies and administered the memory tests early and late in the time period of CC exposure …

Msl: Michif Sign Language-The Noun Phrases, Jacqueline Foster Ferraro Aug 2002

Msl: Michif Sign Language-The Noun Phrases, Jacqueline Foster Ferraro

Theses and Dissertations

By focusing on the noun portion of the conventional Michif sentence, consisting of Cree verb phrases with the intertwining of French noun phrases, the objective of this research is to attempt to reveal some novel parallels in languages, as an initial step in the process of understanding more about the genesis of Michif and American Sign Language. In examining the separate and individual histories and applications of French Sign Language (FSL), American Sign Language (ASL), North American Indian Sign Language (NAISL), and the Amerindian Michif Language, certain commonalities and parallels are indeed present, even transcending the boundaries of diverse races, …

Effects Of Sleep Duration, Sleep Quality, And Time Of Day On Executive Function Performance In Children, Judy T. Klaus Jul 2002

Effects Of Sleep Duration, Sleep Quality, And Time Of Day On Executive Function Performance In Children, Judy T. Klaus

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Executive functions are the cognitive abilities that include self-regulation, inhibition of responding, planning, and mental flexibility. Previous studies on executive functions I I have focused on people with ADHD and other impairments. Studies on sleep and cognitive function abilities have focused on the effects of lack of sleep and the ability to perform executive function tasks. This study examined the cognitive abilities of children with no impairment in relationship to Time of Day, Sleep Duration and Sleep Quality.

Thirty children ranging from age 7 to age 12 were recruited from the area. A self-report questionnaire on typical Sleep Duration and …

Genetic Structure And Isolation By Distance In Napaea Dioica L. (Malvaceae): An Analysis Of Microsatellite Dna Variation., Jonathan Paul Wenger Jun 2002

Genetic Structure And Isolation By Distance In Napaea Dioica L. (Malvaceae): An Analysis Of Microsatellite Dna Variation., Jonathan Paul Wenger

Theses and Dissertations

Napaea dioica L. (Malvaceae) is a robust, dioecious perennial flowering plant that is endemic to the upper midwestem United States. Occurring exclusively on the floodplains o f small rivers, populations o f N. dioica are distributed discretely on a network o f riparian habitat throughout its range which is coincident with the southernmost margin o f the Wisconsinan continental glacier. Ten population o f N. dioica were sampled across the species geographic range and were assayed at four high resolution microsatellite marker loci to assess genetic diversity and population structure in relation to the riparian habitat network and the ecological …

Crossing The Gender Barrier - A History Of Male Nurses In Manitoba, Canada, 1960-1980, Carolyn M. Van Mackelberg May 2002

Crossing The Gender Barrier - A History Of Male Nurses In Manitoba, Canada, 1960-1980, Carolyn M. Van Mackelberg

Theses and Dissertations

This paper, Crossing the Gender Barrier - a History of Male Nurses in Manitoba, Canada, will examine the role of men in a female-dominated profession. There is a distinct lack of historical writing on male nurses. Nursing historiography has generally focused on the women who constitute the majority of nurses. Indeed, much of the literature comes from within the nursing profession and the field of sociology, most of which lack an historical emphasis.

The development of the modem healthcare system is important to this work as it illustrates the evolution of the gender constructs that determined that physicians were male …

Evaluating The Appropriateness Of Fast Forword Training For Hard Of Hearing Children, Shari M. Weisz May 2002

Evaluating The Appropriateness Of Fast Forword Training For Hard Of Hearing Children, Shari M. Weisz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate whether children with a hearing loss could perceive the sound differences in the seven games contained in the demonstration version of the Fast ForWord program, and then, consequently, determine if this program would be appropriate to use as an auditory training tool for this population.

Eight children, between the ages of four and nine, with hearing losses ranging from moderate to moderately severe participated in this study. Successful completion of the games was determined when the child met the criterion score of 100 points. The results indicate that children who are hard …

Teachers, Students, And Technology: A College Teaching And Learning Experience, Lynda G. Kenney May 2002

Teachers, Students, And Technology: A College Teaching And Learning Experience, Lynda G. Kenney

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to better understand the perceptions of college teachers and students at one Upper Midwest university about the intents and effects of technology ori learning. The teachers' and students' experiences were studied for ten weeks during the fall semester of this college's school year.

Qualitative research methods were used in the study including triangulation of participant observation, teacher and student interviews, and participant feedback. Data were analyzed for commonalities and themes, and results were discussed in reference to the literature. Recommendations for teacher educators and administrators were provided.

The study began with one question: What …

Gap Junctional Responses To Increased Camp Levels In A Mouse Mammary Tumor Cell Line., Nancy Lee Traiser Apr 2002

Gap Junctional Responses To Increased Camp Levels In A Mouse Mammary Tumor Cell Line., Nancy Lee Traiser

Theses and Dissertations

The definitive actions o f 8-br-cAMP on connexin trafficking in a mouse mammary tumor cell line, MMT22, have not been fully characterized. In the current study, connexin/fluorescent fusion proteins (utilizing Cx26, Cx32, and Cx43 fused to EGFP or RFP) were assembled to investigate the reaction of several connexins to increased levels of 8-brcAMP. The second messenger, cAMP, has been postulated to pass through and regulate gap junctions, and to be important in the control of gap junctional permeability. In a number of instances, an increase in cAMP has been correlated with an increase in junctional permeability. It has been suggested …
