Implications Of Introduced Mule Deer On Santa Catalina Island, California : Their Impacts, Population Ecology, And Management, Thad A. Manuwal Dec 2007

Implications Of Introduced Mule Deer On Santa Catalina Island, California : Their Impacts, Population Ecology, And Management, Thad A. Manuwal

Theses and Dissertations

A small group of mule deer were introduced to Santa Catalina Island in the early
1930s. The mule deer population increased through the 1940s and 1950s and remains widespread and abundant today. Large browsing ungulates are not native to Santa Catalina Island and there is concern that nonnative mule deer are damaging endemic trees and shrubs on the island when foraging. This study was designed to develop quantitative information on diets, foraging behavior, movements, and population biology of mule deer on Catalina Island.

Diet analysis indicated mule deer are consuming a wide variety of native and
endemic plants found on …

Acts Of Being: Hamlet And The Philosophy Of Soren Kierkegaard, Michael Brandon Lopez Dec 2007

Acts Of Being: Hamlet And The Philosophy Of Soren Kierkegaard, Michael Brandon Lopez

Theses and Dissertations

This study is specifically concerned with analyzing the existential elements in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, utilizing as methodology the works of Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard.

The aims of this study are chiefly to illuminate the usefulness of existentialism as an important, prescient, and timely methodology for criticism, as well as to reveal the applicability of Kierkegaard's works for literary analysis. There have, prior to this study, been other critical examinations of Shakespeare's work, utilizing the philosophy of Kierkegaard - however, unlike those other works of criticism, this project has undertaken comprehensive analysis of the play, making broad use of Kierkegaard's …

The Berlin Poplars: A Translation, Lene Johansen Dec 2007

The Berlin Poplars: A Translation, Lene Johansen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a translation of a section of Anne Birkeland Ragde's Berlinerpoplene, or The Berlin Poplars, a contemporary Norwegian novel about how' family dynamics shape and haunt following generations. The narrative alternates between three brothers and reflects how each of them experiences and deals (consciously or not) with feelings of belonging, alienation, and isolation. The Berlin Poplars is a strong novel: the character development and the interpersonal dynamics are rich, and Ragde presents her very flawed protagonists in a dark, brutally honest, yet humane manner. Furthermore, the novel strongly reflects Norway and traditional Norwegian culture.

The complexity of the …

Woody Encroachment In North Dakota Grasslands: Using Predictive Modeling To Examine Key Players And Management Implications, Leigh A. Ciofani Dec 2007

Woody Encroachment In North Dakota Grasslands: Using Predictive Modeling To Examine Key Players And Management Implications, Leigh A. Ciofani

Theses and Dissertations

Woody shrub encroachment is one of the major threats to grasslands, closely connected to other issues such as fire regimes, herbivore grazing patterns, and climate change, and is currently a global trend. Consequences of shrub encroachment can significantly impact many of the ecological characteristics of grasslands, including grassland biogeochemistry and resource availability and biodiversity. Studies conducted on grassland ecosystems have pointed to grassland management, in the form of prescribed burning, grazing, or some combination of the two, as a way to prevent woody encroachment. Prevention of woody encroachment may be particularly important to preserving grasslands, as management may not be …

Quality In The Red River Basin: An Analysis Of Subsurface Drainage, Janet L. Crossland Dec 2007

Quality In The Red River Basin: An Analysis Of Subsurface Drainage, Janet L. Crossland

Theses and Dissertations

The use of subsurface (tile) drainage on poorly drained fields is not a new concept. In fact, farmers in the Midwest have been using it for more than 150 years to remove excess water from saturated fields to increase crop productivity in the Midwest (Cooke, Badiger, and Garcia, 2000). Unfortunately little research has been done regarding tile drainage in North Dakota's Red River Valley (RRV) or how it will affect the surrounding water bodies.

Because of snowmelt or increased rainfall in the summer, the RRV regularly floods in the spring. Prolonged water on the surface can hinder germination as well …

The Roles Of Lcrg And Lcrv In Secretion Control Of Yops In Yersinia Pestis, Mohamad Hamad Aug 2007

The Roles Of Lcrg And Lcrv In Secretion Control Of Yops In Yersinia Pestis, Mohamad Hamad

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, combats the host immune response by injecting proteins called Yops "Yersinia outer proteins" into the eukaryotic host cells using a type III secretion system "T3SS". The activity of the type T3SS is regulated by several proteins including YscF, YopN, TyeA, SycN, YscB, LcrG, and LcrV. YscF forms the extracellular needle complex of the T3SS and is involved in secretion regulation and in sensing environmental signals for secretion activation. YopN, TyeA, SycN, and YscB form a complex in the cytosol of Y. pestis that blocks the secretion of Yops when conditions do not favor …

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit Aug 2007

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit

Theses and Dissertations

To paraphrase a well-known historian, there is too little nature in the study of history. Although environmental history is a well established field, nature and the physical environment are still often excluded agents in history pedagogy. The following essay is an effort to remedy this problem. This dissertation has two main objectives. The first is to define and describe environmental history and present a rationale for its inclusion as a major component of survey history courses. The second is to outline ways college teachers can include an environmental perspective in their instructional strategies. It includes three sample lesson plans that …

Julius Caesar And The Rhine River: The Evolution Of A Border During The Gallic Wars, Todd Roman Aug 2007

Julius Caesar And The Rhine River: The Evolution Of A Border During The Gallic Wars, Todd Roman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis descusses the use of the Rhine River by Julius Caesar in his commentaries, De Bello Gallico, covering the Gallic Wars of approximately 58 to 52 B.C., to identify the peoples and territories separated by its current. This thesis addresses the issue of how Caesar understood this division of space, what criteria he employed to support his use of the river, and his protrayal of these matters within his account. It seeks to clarify the foundation of a major national border of western history in the context of its initial involvement in the context of the Roman Late …

Identification Of Psychological Stressors For Long Duration Space Missions: Psychological Stressors Among Five Astronauts And Cosmonauts, Melinda S. Marsh Aug 2007

Identification Of Psychological Stressors For Long Duration Space Missions: Psychological Stressors Among Five Astronauts And Cosmonauts, Melinda S. Marsh

Theses and Dissertations

As humans continue to experience space missions of longer and longer duration, more and more high intensity stressors are going to be experienced. Although physiological stressors have been studied, there have been few studies on the psychological stressors. Those that are present primarily focused on the polar environment as a space analogue. In order to answer the question of how stressors may affect future astronauts and cosmonauts, the evolutoinary reasons behind stress must be considered not only the type and intensity of the stressors.

Five astronauts and cosmonauts representing three space agencies were surveyed regarding their experiences with ten types …

Syntheses And Characterizations Of Bis(Diazasilaphosphetidine)Amine, P, N-2-Phosphinoaminopyridine And Phosphaacetylferrocenyl Ligands, And Some Of Their Metal Complexes, Leonard E. Anagho Aug 2007

Syntheses And Characterizations Of Bis(Diazasilaphosphetidine)Amine, P, N-2-Phosphinoaminopyridine And Phosphaacetylferrocenyl Ligands, And Some Of Their Metal Complexes, Leonard E. Anagho

Theses and Dissertations

Symmetric bis(diazasilaphosphetidine)amine chelating ligands of the general formula {Me2Si(p-Nt-Bu)P}2N(Ar) where Ar = C6H4(/?-OMe), C6H4(/7-Me) and C6F5, and asymmetric bis(phosphine)amine ligands have been synthesized by treatment of chlorophosphines or chlorophosphite with the corresponding lithium amides. The asymmetric ligand Me2Si(p-Nt-Bu)2P(=NPh)PPh2 served either as a P,P or a P,N chelate depending on the metal ion and the reaction conditions employed. R./V-2-phosphinoaminopyridine ligands such as [{2-(/-Bu2PNH)C5NH4}LiCl]*C4HgO and [{2-(Me2Si(p-Nf-Bu)2PNH)C5NH4}LiCl]*C4HgO with different substituents at phosphorus have also been synthesized. Numerous molybdenumtetracarbonyl, nickel and palladium complexes of these ligands have been synthesized. The synthesized compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, melting point, NMR and 1R spectroscopic …

The Impact Of Biculturalism On Human Learned Helplessness With Northern Plains Native Americans, Alan H. Storey Jr. Aug 2007

The Impact Of Biculturalism On Human Learned Helplessness With Northern Plains Native Americans, Alan H. Storey Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of participant ethnicity, research ethnicity, and either failure, success, or neural feedback on performance on letter anagram tasks. The failure feedback represented a standard learned helplessness paradigm with the dependent measures focused on the interferences and behavior of he participants in response to feedback from either a Native American or European American researcher. A total of 55 Native Americans and 73 European Americans were assigned randomly to one of three feedback conditions (success, failure, neutral) conducted by a study blind examiner of either American Indian or Caucasian ethnicity and appearance. Participant level of biculturalism was …

Twenty semi-structured personal interviews were conducted with individuals of varying well-being and other characteristics such as age and occupation. The subjects ranged in age from approximately twenty-one to eighty. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and …

A Lakota/Nakota/Dakota Model Of Oratory, Cheryl A. Long Feather May 2007

A Lakota/Nakota/Dakota Model Of Oratory, Cheryl A. Long Feather

Theses and Dissertations

Lakota/Nakota/Dakota people, as well as other Native American tribal groups, did not traditionally use the established, conventional forms of oration to which most in contemporary mainstream society relate. Rather, Native-specific epistemology, ontology and axiology played a central role in forming and supporting the function of communication as well as the speaking conventions that continue to be used today. These culturally-based patterns and structures present both challenges and opportunities that have been only marginally explored in various disciplines such as education, social and behavioral science, and psychology. This body of work exists for the purpose of exploring a traditionally Native understanding …

Distribution, Abundance, And Habitat Associations Of The Long-Billed Curlew In Southwestern North Dakota, Daniel S. Ackerman May 2007

Distribution, Abundance, And Habitat Associations Of The Long-Billed Curlew In Southwestern North Dakota, Daniel S. Ackerman

Theses and Dissertations

Gathering information on North American bird populations calls for long-term monitoring programs covering extensive geographic region to provide basic information on distribution, habitat use and availability, abundance, and changes in abundance. Information regarding population size, distributions and trends is of critical importance to conservation planners, managers, and biologists concerned with widespread degradation of ecosystems, alteration and loss of habitats, and understanding the effective conservation of a species. In accordance with the recommended monitoring of bird populations, especially species of high conservation concern, I undertook a study of the long-billed curlew (Numenius americanus parvus; hereafter LBCU or curlew). The LBCU were …
