Molecular Characterization Of Dopamine Transporter Phosphorylation And Regulation, Balachandra Kumar Gorentla Jan 2008

Molecular Characterization Of Dopamine Transporter Phosphorylation And Regulation, Balachandra Kumar Gorentla

Theses and Dissertations

The dopamine transporter (DAT) is a presynaptic membrane phosphoprotein that terminates dopaminergic synaptic transmission by clearing dopamine (DA) back into presynaptic neuron by a reuptake process. DAT is also a molecular target for psychostimulants such as cocaine, amphetamine (AMPH) and methamphetamine (METH) that increase DA synaptic levels either by blocking reuptake or by inducing DA efflux. DAT phosphorylation and transport down regulation are best demonstrated with the treatment of Protein kinase C (PKC) activators such as (phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate) PMA. Serine(s) and threonine(s) are known to be involved in DAT phosphorylation.

Pretreatment with psychostimulant substrates such as AMPH and METH …

Role Of Penicillin Binding Proteins And Amidases In Daughter Cell Separation In Escherichia Coli, Richa Priyadarshini Dec 2007

Role Of Penicillin Binding Proteins And Amidases In Daughter Cell Separation In Escherichia Coli, Richa Priyadarshini

Theses and Dissertations

In the final stages of the bacterial growth cycle, daughter cells must be released from one another by cleaving the shared peptidoglycan cell wall that separates them. Although enzymes capable of cleaving bonds in the murein sacculus are ubiquitous among the bacteria, the physiological roles of only a few of these enzymes are clear. The peptidoglycan-specific amidases play an important role in cleaving the septum to release daughter cells after cell division in Escherichia coli. E. coli has three amidases dedicated to this task: AmiA, AmiB and AmiC. These enzymes remove side chains from the peptidoglycan by hydrolyzing the bond …

The Use Of Information Books In The Preschool Classroom: Possibilities For Nurturing The Young Scientific Mind, Pamela A. Langlie Dec 2007

The Use Of Information Books In The Preschool Classroom: Possibilities For Nurturing The Young Scientific Mind, Pamela A. Langlie

Theses and Dissertations

The use of information books in the preschool classroom, and the potential of the books and the learning activities associated with the books for promoting science among young children are explored. The research was first conducted with four children at a university children's center, and then replicated in a whole class setting at a college child development lab school in another state. Using qualitative procedures the study produced several grounded theories which led to the assertion that preschoolers, independently of their teachers, select information books according to their developmental interests, and use the books for exploring scientific concepts, and to …

Analysis Of Host Responses Against The Plague, Deanna O'Bryant Dec 2007

Analysis Of Host Responses Against The Plague, Deanna O'Bryant

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, is endemic to most of the world. Y. pestis' potential threat as a biological warfare agent has drawn increased attention to pathogenesis and vaccine research for the plague. A number of characteristics related both to the host response to, and bacterial pathogenesis of, Y. pestis were examined. To investigate the potential role of MHC Class II antigen presentation during the plague, HLA-DQ8αβ transgenic mice were infected with Y. pestis. DQ8 mice demonstrated a greatly enhanced age-dependent resistance to Y. pestis infection with females more resistant than males, mimicking gender differences in human plague, …

The Population Genetics Of The Wood Frog, Rana Sylvatica, Across Its Geographic Range, Tina M. Squire Dec 2007

The Population Genetics Of The Wood Frog, Rana Sylvatica, Across Its Geographic Range, Tina M. Squire

Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to determine the level of genetic variation across the continental-wide range of the wood frog, Rana sylvatica. Levels of genetic differentiation between sampled populations were investigated as was the possible locations of glacial refugia for this species. DNA microsatellites were used as the genetic marker. This study found significant genetic differentiation across the geographic range of Rana sylvatica that increased with geographic distance. In addition three likely glacial refugia, Alaska, New York and the southern Appalachians, were identified.

A subset of the populations used in the geographic range study was used to investigate the patterns at a …

An Examination Of Executive Function And Reading Ability In Children With A Reading Disability And Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Shyla Leigh Muse

Theses and Dissertations

This study compared 56 children between the ages of 7 and 13 with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), children with a diagnosis of ADHD and a reading disability (ADHD/RD), children with only a reading disability (RD), and a control group on measures of cognition, reading, executive function, and memory tasks. Specifically, the study was looking to examine the impact of comorbid disorders on the performance of children with ADHD on tests of cognitive function. Given that children diagnosed with ADHD frequently will display a learning disability, often a reading disability, this study also examined the impact of comorbidity on tests of cognitive …

The Effects Of Time Of Day On Executive Function And Memory In Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Jennifer M. Garaas Dec 2007

The Effects Of Time Of Day On Executive Function And Memory In Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Jennifer M. Garaas

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined time of day effects on the performance of executive function and memory tasks in children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and non-ADHD children. Previous studies have found that ADHD children performed worse on executive function and memory tasks. Also, research has found that time of day influences performance on executive function and memory tasks. The data analysis in this present study consisted of comparing the performance of ADHD children tested in the morning, ADHD children tested in the afternoon, non-ADHD children tested in the morning, and non-ADHD children tested in the afternoon on a variety of tests of …

March 2006 through April 2007 data collection occurred in two rural communities with populations of less than 1,000. The ecologic model and feminist underpinnings guided …

The Noun Class System Of U̱T-Ma'in, A West Kainji Language Of Nigeria, Rebecca Dow Smith Dec 2007

The Noun Class System Of U̱T-Ma'in, A West Kainji Language Of Nigeria, Rebecca Dow Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This present work provides a comprehensive overview of the noun class system of u̱t-Ma'in, a Benue-Congo (West Kainji) language of Northwestern Nigeria. The u̱t-Ma'in language is characterized by a complex noun classification system and a robust agreement system that permeates the language. While an understanding of the noun classes is essential to an understanding of the language as a whole, discussion includes the division of nouns into thirteen distinct classes, marked by prefixes on the nouns themselves and by agreement elements on other clause constituents. The relationship of the noun classes of u̱t-Ma'in to historical reconstruction work available for the …
