The Campaign To Impeach Justice William O. Douglas; Nixon, Vietnam, And The Conservative Attack On Judicial Independence, Joshua E. Kastenberg

Faculty Book Display Case

The politics of division and distraction, conservatives’ claims of liberalism’s dangers, the wisdom of amoral foreign policy, a partisan challenge to a Supreme Court justice, and threats to the constitutionally mandated balance between the three branches of government: however of the moment these matters might seem, they are clearly presaged in events chronicled by Joshua E. Kastenberg in this book, the first in-depth account of a campaign to impeach Supreme Court justice William O. Douglas nearly fifty years ago.

On April 15, 1970, at President Richard Nixon’s behest, Republican House Minority Leader Gerald Ford brazenly called for the impeachment of …

Pulmonary Coccidioidomycosis Diagnosed By Endobronchial Ultrasound With Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Of A Paratracheal Pulmonary Nodule, Aibek E. Mirrakhimov, Oleh Hnatiuk, Tiffany Grant, David R. Martin, Ali I. Saeed

Pathology Research and Scholarship

occidioidomycosis is a fungal infection which is prevalent in the southwestern region of the United States.1 Clinical presentation of pulmonary coccidioidomycosis is nonspecific, and the disease can manifest as subclinical infection, upper respiratory viral-like illness, and rarely severe respiratory failure requiring intensive care admission. Radiologically the disease can present with pulmonary infiltrates, nodules or cavitary lesions which can mimic other infectious, autoimmune, and neoplastic disorders.2 The diagnosis is typically made using serologic testing.3 The most commonly performed serologic methods are enzyme-linked immunoassay (EIA), qualitative immunodiffusion testing for immunoglobulin M and G antibodies and quantitative complement fixation.3 …

Salivary Duct Carcinoma: A Case Report Of Oncocytic Variant With Possible Treatment Implications And Review Of Literature, Radhika Sekhri, Ibrahim Ortanca, Christopher Boals, Shweta Agarwal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is an aggressive malignancy, resembling high-grade ductal carcinoma of the breast. Histologically, it shows cords and nests with cribriforming, marked nuclear atypia, comedonecrosis, perineural, and lymphovascular invasion. We report a rare case of SDC in a 61-year-old woman presenting with facial asymmetry, dysphagia, and cervical lymphadenopathy. Imaging showed an ill-defined infiltrating mass in parotid gland and multiple enlarged cervical lymph nodes. Histologically, the largest focus of tumor consisted of an intra-parotid lymph node replaced by sheets of bland appearing oncocytic tumor cells with abundant cytoplasm, centrally placed nucleus, and single prominent nucleolus. No mitotic figures were …

Quantifying The Extent Of Wildfire Impacted Streams In The Western United States, Grady Ball Oct 2019

Quantifying The Extent Of Wildfire Impacted Streams In The Western United States, Grady Ball

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Beginning in the mid-1980s, the number of fires and acres burned by wildfire in the United States has grown at an explosive rate. Several factors, anthropogenic and natural, have converged to create a new era of high frequency, high intensity fires, which is predicted to continue until at least mid-century. Investigations into wildfire impacts have largely focused on post-fire impacts on terrestrial systems, while effects on aquatic ecosystems have been underrepresented. The growing threat of fire to streams has accelerated the need for germane information regarding the spatial extent of fire impacts on watersheds and post-fire impacts to aquatic systems. …

The Virtue Of Vulnerability: Mindfulness And Well-Being In Law Schools And The Legal Profession, Nathalie Martin Oct 2019

The Virtue Of Vulnerability: Mindfulness And Well-Being In Law Schools And The Legal Profession, Nathalie Martin

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the role of vulnerability in transforming individual relationships, particularly the attorney-client relationship. In this essay, Martin argues that broadening our expressions can improve our client relations and decrease the likelihood that when that inevitable mistake occurs, we will be sued for it. Also, based upon virtue ethics, that practicing vulnerability is also virtuous and thus worthwhile in and of itself.

This essay starts by describing the traits people look for in lawyers as well as evidence that clients often feel that their lawyers are less than human. Then examines how legal education contributes to this problem by …

A Prospective Study Of Medical Student Mental Health And Attitudes Of Mental Illness Disclosure, Michael Castle, Ian Fletcher, Aaron Scarpa, Orrin Myers, Elizabeth Lawrence

HSC Education Days

BACKGROUND: Little is known about whether students would disclose a history of mental illness on a residency or state medical licensure applications if disclosure were required. This study uses preliminary data to explore the burden of perceived mental illness among medical students, whether or not medical students would be willing to disclose this information on a residency or licensure application if prompted, and reasons for disclosure hesitance. METHODS: We electronically invited all University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNM SOM) students enrolled in the Classes of 2019-2022 to participate in a REDCap survey about the diagnosis and treatment of …

Thwarting Adversaries With Randomness And Irrationality, Abhinav Aggarwal Sep 2019

Thwarting Adversaries With Randomness And Irrationality, Abhinav Aggarwal

Computer Science ETDs

Distributed systems are ubiquitous today: from the Internet used by billions of people around the world to the small scale IoT devices. With this rapidly increasing need to perform computation at scales larger than ever before, comes the need to ensure resilience to adversarial failures so that these systems can continue to behave as intended even when some malicious tampering happens.

In this dissertation, we explore the power of randomness and the difficulty of rationally approximating the Golden Ratio to thwart adversarial behavior in two different problems in distributed computing: interactive communication and robust collaborative search. While randomness helps with …

An Investigation Of Runoff Sources To Headwater Streams And Implications For Hydropower Projects Using Stable Isotope Analyses, Paulina Lima Sep 2019

An Investigation Of Runoff Sources To Headwater Streams And Implications For Hydropower Projects Using Stable Isotope Analyses, Paulina Lima

Civil Engineering ETDs

The purpose of this research is to investigate the predominant sources and processes that influence runoff in the watersheds that interact with hydraulic structures in different climate systems. The predominant sources in three basins were analyzed: The San Juan-Chama River System in the USA, the Manduriacu, and Coca Codo Sinclair hydropower systems in Ecuador. This field study is based on the identification of the predominant sources in the watershed by the comparison of the isotopic signature between the seasonal variation of water sources to the surface water samples in different stream order tributaries. The results exposed that there are three …

On Three Possible Applications Of Neutrosophic Logic In Applied Sciences, Including Matter Creation, Victor Christianto, Robert N. Boyd, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In the same spirit with the theme of last issue of this SGJ journal (“Ongoing creation”), this paper shortly reviews a plausible mechanism from Aether to become ordinary matter from the perspective of Neutrosophic Logic. We also discuss two other possible applications of Neutrosophic Logic, including a resolution of conflicting paradigms in medicine. We hope that some ideas as outlined herein will be proved useful in the near future.
