Making Love: Love Magic In Medieval Romances, Dalicia Raymond
Making Love: Love Magic In Medieval Romances, Dalicia Raymond
Shared Knowledge Conference
This study considers the functions of love magic and the authorial discomfort with which it is treated in high and late medieval romances from continental and insular Europe. I theorize three functions of love magic-to induce love, to disrupt love, and to maintain or facilitate love. I assert that although magic and adulterous courtly love in medieval romances are accepted by medieval authors, the use of love-inducing magic is presented with an authorial discomfort that requires either an implicit condemnation or an explicit divine endorsement due to the violation of free will. I examine this discomfort in a variety of …
Queer Critical Theory: A Key To Equity For Latinx Lgbtq+ Students In High School, Damon R. Carbajal
Queer Critical Theory: A Key To Equity For Latinx Lgbtq+ Students In High School, Damon R. Carbajal
Shared Knowledge Conference
Students living at multiple marginalized identities often struggle most in the K-12 public school system. This is especially true for LGBTQ+ Latinx students in the state of New Mexico where the system often suppresses opportunities for these students to thrive. A key to reversing this suppression is through understanding the lived experiences of students who live at the intersection of being LGBTQ+ and Latinx. To understand these experiences fuller, the question, what is the social experience of male Latinx LGBTQ+ students in high school and how do these social aspects affect their academic achievement, is explored. Due to the lack …
Simulation Of Tethered One-Legged Molecular Walkers On Independent 1-D Tracks, David Arredondo, Darko Stefanovic
Simulation Of Tethered One-Legged Molecular Walkers On Independent 1-D Tracks, David Arredondo, Darko Stefanovic
Shared Knowledge Conference
We study the motion of random walkers with residence time bias between first and subsequent visits to a site, as a model for synthetic molecular walkers based on catalytic DNA known as molecular spiders [3, 2, 1, 5]. Previous studies have discovered exceptionally long superdiffusive transients, which would be relevant in experiments and applications. The mechanism of the transient superdiffusion was explained via the emergence of a boundary between the new and the previously visited sites, and the tendency of the multi-legged spider to cling to this boundary, provided there is a residence time bias between the first and the …
Relationship Between Initial Environmental Conditions And Biotic Extinction Events From The Last ~540 Million Years, Dustin Perriguey, Corinne Myers
Relationship Between Initial Environmental Conditions And Biotic Extinction Events From The Last ~540 Million Years, Dustin Perriguey, Corinne Myers
Shared Knowledge Conference
Extinction has occurred throughout Earth history, with most of the focus on the largest in magnitude from the last ~540 million years (Myrs), or the Phanerozoic Eon. Extinction science has concentrated on the trigger and the recovery of these events. The largest extinctions have been linked to abiotic environmental forcing (e.g. massive volcanic events, extraterrestrial impacts, or climate change) that drove biota to extinction. Here, we investigate the impact initial environmental conditions had on elevated Phanerozoic extinction rates of marine genera. To test hypotheses of how specific "initial conditions" of abiotic environmental factors may have impacted extinction rates, we compiled …
The Relationship Between Access To Health Insurance And Obesity, Eunice Amoah
The Relationship Between Access To Health Insurance And Obesity, Eunice Amoah
Shared Knowledge Conference
Obesity is a global epidemic that is spreading at a faster rate in developed and developing countries. This paper investigates the relationship between access to health insurance and obesity after controlling for physical inactivity, poverty, sleep and binge drinking. The main hypothesis is that a higher access to health care will decrease the probability of obesity in the U.S. I examined data on unhealthy lifestyles and access to health insurance in 2016 collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the CDC Foundation as a part of the 500 Cities project. This …

The Community Engagement and Dissemination Core (CEDC) within the TREE Center plays an integral role in developing transdisciplinary intervention science capacity. This is done through the creation of an information and dissemination infrastructure to improve how evidence-based science is collaboratively disseminated through mechanisms and channels that align with New Mexico communities. A major focus of the CEDC's …
Novel Methods For Measuring Drought Stress Of Crops In The Field, Kaitlyn Read, Patrick Hudson, Philip Miller, David Hanson
Novel Methods For Measuring Drought Stress Of Crops In The Field, Kaitlyn Read, Patrick Hudson, Philip Miller, David Hanson
Shared Knowledge Conference
There is currently no available method for land managers to directly and non-destructively measure the water status of plants in the field. Water status of a plant effects plant growth and function and contributes to end-of-season crop yield. We have developed wearable, minimally invasive microneedle sensors that can be precisely placed in leaves of crops, to be used as electrodes for electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). EIS measures the passive electrical properties (magnitude and phase shift of impedance) of the leaf. EIS can be used to model biologic tissue as an electrical circuit, where ions in the intra- and extracellular fluid …

Introduction: Gadolinium-based contrast agents have revolutionized clinical imaging. Conversely, there is growing concern of the overall safety of these agents. Once administered there is long-term retention of gadolinium in tissues. The long-term biologic impact of gadolinium retention is if monumental concern to patients and drug-regulating administrations. Methods: Our research team was the first to establish a rodent model of iatrogenic systemic fibrosis using chimeric mice. Wild-type C57/BL6 mice were randomized by sex and weight into contrast treatment (2.5 mmol/kg intraperitoneally, 20 doses over 4 weeks) or untreated groups. Ultrasound (Vevo 3100, FujiFilm VisualSonics) was performed several days-post final contrast treatment. …

Bayesian model calibration has become a powerful tool for the analysis of experimental data coupled with a physics-based mathematical model. The forward problem of prediction, especially within the range of data, is generally well-posed. There are many well-known issues with the approach when solving the inverse problem of parameter estimation, especially when the calibration parameters have physical interpretations. In this poster, we explore several techniques to identify and overcome these challenges. First, we consider regularization, which refers to the process of constraining the solution space in a meaningful and reasonable way. This is accomplished via the Moment Penalization prior distribution …

The transfer of heat through radiation plays a crucial role in the thermalization of nanoscale objects thanks to the involvement of evanescent waves. As nanotechnology becomes a prominent area of research and development, the understanding of this phenomenon is becoming more and more crucial. In this work, we investigate the thermalization of linear chains of SiC nanospheres. To that end, we develop an analytical method that allows us to calculate the radiative heat exchange between the particles through the analysis of the normal modes of the system and their corresponding decay rates. Using this approach we analyze the time evolution …

Sex-Specific Survival And Tumor Mutational Burden In Early Stage Melanoma, Matthew Schwartz, Li Luo, Sara Niedbalski, Arshi Arora, Ronglai Shen, Marianne Berwick
Shared Knowledge Conference
Introduction Tumor mutational burden (TMB) is a promising biomarker of clinical response to immune checkpoint inhibitors in metastatic cancers, and melanoma-specific survival. There are also significant gender-specific differences in TMB with men having consistently higher TMB than women. This relationship is provocative given the well-documented female melanoma survival advantage, and has not been investigated in early-stage primary tumors naïve to treatment. Approach Here we present preliminary findings on sex, survival, and tumor mutational burden from Stages II and III primary melanoma tumors, none of which have received immunotherapy using the MSK IMPACT™ next generation sequencing assay. Our team evaluated survival …

A large body of research has indicated that moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (PAE - 60 mg/dl peak BAC) can produce impairments on cognitive processes, such as spatial learning and memory. The neurobiological basis of these impairments is poorly understood but is frequently linked to alterations in hippocampal functioning. Although the hippocampus has a central role in learning and memory, damage to the hippocampus can also produce impairments in locomotor and exploratory behaviors by rodents (reviewed in Thompson et al., 2018). Rodent exploratory behavior is organized around home bases, which serves as central points of attraction from which rats and mice …

Alzheimer's disease (AD), which currently affects 5.7 million people in the US, is clinically characterized by progressive memory decline. Since aging is a primary risk factor, and we are all getting older, this number is expected to triple to nearly 16 million, signaling a troubling health crisis. Tau, a protein in the brain, which normally provides support within neurons changes during the course of AD into pathological tau (pTau). pTau then accumulates as insoluble tangles within neurons, causing cell death, brain atrophy, and memory impairment. In the current study, we have developed a vaccine using a virus-like particle (VLP) platform …

Understanding how the optical response of plasmonic nanostructures is modified by the presence of a metallic substrate is a fundamental research problem relevant for many applications including biosensing, solar energy harvesting, photochemistry, and even color printing. In this work, we show that nanoparticles, which are placed in direct contact with a metallic substrate, display a charge transfer plasmon mode. Using rigorous solutions of Maxwell's equations, we find that this mode is far less dependent on the nanoparticle morphology than traditional dipolar modes. Equipped with this knowledge, we study the optical properties of daguerreotypes, which are recognized as the earliest photographic …

Drone-Laser-Computer Aided System For Remote Monitoring Of Critical Structures, Roya Nasimi, Fernando Moreu
Shared Knowledge Conference
The structures and infrastructures are decaying, and they need regular monitoring for performance and safety assessment. One of the factors that can be an indicator of the poor performance of the structures is vibrations exceeding acceptable values specified in the safety codes. However, current existing methods require inspectors to climb the structures to install sensors on these critical zones. These sensors are contact sensors and they need a reference point from where to measure. Installation of the sensors can be unsafe for inspectors, take time, lead to huge expenses, and sometimes these critical structures don't even have access. Drones are …

Semmes-Weinstein Sensory Testing At The Fingertip: Should 2.83 Be The Norm?, Samantha Specht, Kaitlyn P. Casaus, Elizabeth I. Madrid, Michelle W. Randall
Shared Knowledge Conference
The Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test (SWM) is an objective test of sensation that is commonly used to identify sensory impairments in the hand. In traditional SWM testing, one out of three positive responses to the 2.83 mm monofilament indicates "normal" sensation, while a positive response to only the 3.61 mm monofilament indicates "diminished" sensation. Studies have found a significant variability in sensibility across subjects, which questions the validity of the 2.83 monofilament as normal. Objective: To determine if male and female subjects aged 25 and older with no history of sensory symptoms or known neurologic conditions would feel the 2.83 (normal) …

Exhaust gases from coal combustion contain contaminants such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrous oxide (NOx), and traces of other pollutants such as arsenic, mercury, nitrate, and selenium. Exhaust gas scrubbers are used to limit the emissions of these constituents to air. Treating exhaust gases to remove SO2 is referred to as flue gas desulfurization (FGD), and the most common method is the use of wet scrubbers using limestone slurries. To limit the concentration of dissolved constituents, a fraction of this solution is drawn off as a blowdown and becomes FGD wastewater. The treatment of this wastewater and its high …

Social-emotional learning has become an increasingly popular topic in education as today's students are expected to attend to an exceeding amount of expectations, such as academic achievement, responsible decision making, cooperating with others, and resisting negative tendencies (Elias et al., 1997). SEL is founded on the notion that social-emotional learning and academic achievement are interdependent and should be deliberately taught in order to maximize student learning (Greenberg et al., 2003). Accordingly, CASEL developed guides for implementing district-wide SEL programming to ensure competencies are taught across subject areas (Durlak et al., 2011). SEL programs can occur during the school day or …
