Design And Applications Of Charge-Separated Metal-Organic Frameworks, Sheela Thapa Nov 2019

Design And Applications Of Charge-Separated Metal-Organic Frameworks, Sheela Thapa

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Ionic tetrapodal ligands with colinear coordinating arms are very effective for designing hybrid porous materials with unusual structure and properties. The novelty of this research work lies in the utilization of a unique borate ligand that leads to charge-separated MOF structure with tailor designed properties. Borate ligands being tetrahedral afford 3D materials and the negative charge of borate anion can compensate the positive charge of metal ion in the framework. The borate ligands designed in this research consists of quaternary ammonium cation and anionic borate with four pyridine arms. These ligands upon coordination with Cu(I), Cu(II), Ag(I) and Co(II) metal …

Recovery Of Gypsum & Magnesium Hydroxide From Brackish Water By Chemical Precipitation, Sugam Tandukar Nov 2019

Recovery Of Gypsum & Magnesium Hydroxide From Brackish Water By Chemical Precipitation, Sugam Tandukar

Civil Engineering ETDs

Exhaust gases from coal combustion contain contaminants such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrous oxide (NOx), and traces of other pollutants such as arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), nitrate (NO3), and selenium (Se). Exhaust gas scrubbers are used to limit the emissions of these constituents to air. Treating exhaust gases to remove SO2 is referred to as flue gas desulfurization (FGD), and the most common method is the use of wet scrubbers using limestone slurries. The limestone slurry is recycled multiple times in the scrubber, and to limit the concentration of dissolved constituents, a …

The Role Of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Blood Pressure Regulation And Secondhand Smoke-Induced Vascular Dysfunction, Emily Anna Wheeler Nov 2019

The Role Of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Blood Pressure Regulation And Secondhand Smoke-Induced Vascular Dysfunction, Emily Anna Wheeler

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) may lower cardiovascular disease risk by reducing blood pressure (BP). We hypothesized that fat-1 transgenic mice, which convert n-6 PUFAs to n-3 PUFAs, would have improved vascular function in BP regulation and following secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, compared to wild type (WT) mice.

BP was recorded in mice fed an n-6 PUFA, or standard chow diet. On the n-6 PUFA diet fat-1 mice had a lower mean arterial pressure and a greater decrease in diastolic BP when treated with an ACE inhibitor, compared to WT mice. No differences were observed on the chow diet. …

A methodology in which is described in detail as well as an applied demonstration where literature before this thesis, lacks in replication and serves to establish a basis for multi-body dynamic analysis in this area. Two models to be created, rigid and flexible, and to compare each other to study the effects the chassis torsional stiffness has during load transfer. Ultimately, to assist in the design of a vehicle that …

Recovering Abiquiú’S Lost Church Records, Samuel E. Sisneros Nov 2019

Recovering Abiquiú’S Lost Church Records, Samuel E. Sisneros

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In early 2016, an elderly couple came into UNM’s Center for Southwest Research & Special Collections determined to donate six hide-covered books to the archives. They confessed they did not know their contents and that even though the books were in the care of the family for many years, they thought UNM would be a suitable place for them to be preserved and studied. I immediately realized that these antique books were the long lost baptismal, marriage and burial registers (1777-1861) from the Mission Church of Santo Tomás Apóstol de Abiquiú and that the rightful repository for them was the …

Experimental Testing Of A 3d-Printed Metamaterial Slow Wave Structure For High Power Microwave Generation, Antonio B. De Alleluia

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A metamaterial (MTM) high power microwave (HPM) vacuum electron device (VED) was developed using 3D printing technology. The specific geometric pattern of the source can produce both negative permittivity and permeability to interact with a relativistic electron beam. The electron beam is generated using a pulsed electron accelerator with a maximum energy of 700 keV and lasting approximately 16 ns. The design of this novel VED consists of a circular waveguide loaded with complementary split-ring resonators in a linear periodic arrangement in which the relativistic beam travels guided by a magnetic field. The electrons interact with the MTM producing electromagnetic …

The Influence Of Infant Temperament On Maternal Sensitivity In Preterm Infants, Suzanne Vaccaro Nov 2019

The Influence Of Infant Temperament On Maternal Sensitivity In Preterm Infants, Suzanne Vaccaro

Psychology ETDs

Infants who experience sensitive caregiving are at lower risk for numerous adverse outcomes. This is especially true for infants born preterm, leading them to be more susceptible to risks associated with poorer quality caregiving. Some research suggests that preterm and full term infants differ on in temperament, which may contribute to findings that caregivers of preterm infants are often found to display less sensitive responding to their infants. To investigate the associations between term status, infant temperament, and maternal behavior, videotaped play interactions and a measure of temperament, the Infant Behavior Questionnaire were coded for samples of preterm and full …

Non-Traditional Hispanic Women Students In Post-Secondary Education, Melanie C. Zollner Nov 2019

Non-Traditional Hispanic Women Students In Post-Secondary Education, Melanie C. Zollner

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Today, the Hispanic population is the fastest growing minority in the United States. As a minority-majority Hispanic state, it is imperative that New Mexico addresses the needs of this population, particularly education, as it creates opportunities for growth. Historically, the Hispanic population experienced limited access to education, which impacted their access to income and occupation, making them expendable.

Throughout history, women have faced inequality. In the United States, women had to overcome several obstacles to have access to education and be allowed to enroll in post-secondary education (Hagedorn, Womack, Vogt, Westebbe, & Kealing, 2002). It must be noted that the …

Authenticity Beyond Teaching Materials: The Impact Of Teacher's Authentic Care On Student's Beliefs In The First-Year Foreign Language Classes, Anna Shkireva Nov 2019

Authenticity Beyond Teaching Materials: The Impact Of Teacher's Authentic Care On Student's Beliefs In The First-Year Foreign Language Classes, Anna Shkireva

Shared Knowledge Conference

The one-semester foreign language requirement in some US colleges could be detrimental to student retention due to their psychological disposition and causal interpretation of the outcomes of the learning process. Students who do not show rapid progress during their first semester of foreign language classes often believe that they do not have a natural ability to learn a foreign language. Such beliefs could decrease students' motivation to continue their foreign language studies. Research shows that personal beliefs about intelligence and knowledge are not strongly related to abilities, but affect the way people reason (Bruning, Schraw & Norby, 2011). In foreign …

Novel Biological Super-Luminescent Sensors For The Detection Of Neurodegenerative Disorders, Florencia Monge Nov 2019

Novel Biological Super-Luminescent Sensors For The Detection Of Neurodegenerative Disorders, Florencia Monge

Shared Knowledge Conference

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only disease in the top ten causes for which we have no treatment or cure. The cost of this disease is expected to rise over a trillion dollars over the next 30 years, it affects individuals and it is also a national healthcare crisis. This disease shares pathological hallmarks, protein aggregates, with other neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease and traumatic brain injuries. Proteins are an organism's micro-machinery for transport, defense, storage, and communication. However, in neurodegenerative diseases, the proteins malfunction, change shape, clump together …

Finding The Relationship Between Communication And Participation, Eileen Armes, Jessica Richardson, Richard Arenas, Lori Nelson, Katarina Haley, Adam Jacks

Shared Knowledge Conference

Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder, an impairment on an established language system affecting production and comprehension of language due to brain damage. This has drastic affects and impacts all aspects daily living across all modalities. Previously, measures in speech and language therapy in aphasia management focused on discrete object naming tasks, or the impairment itself, but research in aphasia management is moving towards a broader sense of supporting communication success for persons with aphasia (PWA). Discourse measures were developed to gain a more complete picture of a PWA's functional communication abilities. Discourse sampling, obtained in a controlled clinic/lab environment …

How Might Exploring The Life Experiences Of Diverse Students Support Them To Graduate From Urban Planning Programs, Jordan James Nov 2019

How Might Exploring The Life Experiences Of Diverse Students Support Them To Graduate From Urban Planning Programs, Jordan James

Shared Knowledge Conference

Urban Planning is rarely an academic discipline that undergraduate students pursue outright. The vast majority become aware of the field after exposure in sister disciplines such as architecture, geography or general liberal arts courses. Upon survey, these students indicate an interest in urban planning academics as providing professional opportunities towards saving the environment, inhibiting climate change or repatriating prosperity back into the declining communities they call home. With such a variety of student diversity, both academic and ethnographic, we can no longer assume that the traditional pedagogical methods of urban planning education can continue to meet the needs of tomorrows …

The Experiences Of Parents Of Children Who Stutter And Their Involvement In Support Groups, Katlyn Ferguson, Richard Arenas Nov 2019

The Experiences Of Parents Of Children Who Stutter And Their Involvement In Support Groups, Katlyn Ferguson, Richard Arenas

Shared Knowledge Conference

Developmental stuttering is a communication disorder that typically begins between the ages of two and four and is usually preceded by a typical degree of fluency. While approximately 75% of children will not persist, the remaining are at increased risk of lifelong stuttering. Despite decades of research into the causes and implications of stuttering, it's still a bit of an enigma. The effects of stuttering on caregivers of people who stutter (PWS) remains even more in the shadows. As compared to research regarding the caregiver experience in other disorders, research focusing on caregivers of PWS is startlingly sparse. Additionally, though …

Degrees Of Change, Joshua Vallejos Nov 2019

Degrees Of Change, Joshua Vallejos

Shared Knowledge Conference

The transition between the Paleoindian (13,000-8,000) and Archaic (8,000-1,000) Periods continues to elude North American archaeologists. It is inferred from archaeological evidence that human populations were nomadic hunter-gatherers during both periods. The creation of storage pits, however, provides evidence for some seasonal sedentism during the Archaic Period. This development may have been influenced by climate change at the end of the Ice Age. Stable Isotopic Analysis of faunal remains allows archaeologists to capture a snapshot of past climate in a given area. Water Canyon in Magdalena, New Mexico, has yielded two overlapping bison kill sites. The older kill site dates …

Radioisotope Retention In Molten Lead For Lead Cooled Fast Reactor, Shuprio Ghosh Nov 2019

Radioisotope Retention In Molten Lead For Lead Cooled Fast Reactor, Shuprio Ghosh

Shared Knowledge Conference

Lead cooled fast reactors (LFRs) are among next generation of safer nuclear reactors. Molten lead (Pb) is the primary coolant in LFRs due to its low vapor pressure, excellent thermophysical (high boiling point and thermal conductivity) and neutronic properties (low absorption and low moderation), and thermal energy storage potential. However, uncertainties in mechanistic source term evaluation of liquid lead coolant has stalled the progress in safety assessment and licensing process. In the past, if not all, the majority of liquid metal coolant research has been done with liquid sodium. In collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory and Westinghouse Electric Company, …

Probing Through Woods On A Snowy Transect, Adrian Marziliano, Ryan Webb Nov 2019

Probing Through Woods On A Snowy Transect, Adrian Marziliano, Ryan Webb

Shared Knowledge Conference

Snow is the largest source of water for agricultural, industrial and municipal use in much of the Southwestern United States. As climate change continues to affect snowfall each year, more accurate snow budget estimates will become increasingly important. The advancement of snow measurement methods and technologies has allowed for greater efficiency in data collection for calculating snow water equivalent (SWE) distribution. In order for these technologies to be effectively utilized, a better understanding of the influences on snowpack variability is necessary. This study observes snow depth and density variability that could affect the accuracy of SWE estimates across forest stand …

Femtosecond Laser-Induced Modifications Of Frequency Tripling Mirrors, Amir Khabbazi Oskouei, Sebastian Baur, Luke Emmert, Wolfgang Rudolph, Marco Jupé, Thomas Willemsen, Morten Steinecke, Lars Jensen, Detlev Ristau Nov 2019

Femtosecond Laser-Induced Modifications Of Frequency Tripling Mirrors, Amir Khabbazi Oskouei, Sebastian Baur, Luke Emmert, Wolfgang Rudolph, Marco Jupé, Thomas Willemsen, Morten Steinecke, Lars Jensen, Detlev Ristau

Shared Knowledge Conference

It is well known that dielectric materials change their properties during irradiation by (high-power) lasers. While in some cases this is desirable and used for laser conditioning, in many cases these material modifications need to be avoided or minimized to maintain the function of optical elements, like mirrors and beam splitters. Recently dielectric stacks have been proposed as nonlinear optical elements for frequency conversion and switches. These dielectric multi-layer coatings are exposed to large incident intensities, which may lead to permanent refractive index changes. We characterize material modifications of a frequency tripling mirror to assess their impact on conversion efficiency …

Npr's Tiny Desk Concert Series: Vocalities Of Outrage And Acts Of Gaiety, Aubrie Powell Nov 2019

Npr's Tiny Desk Concert Series: Vocalities Of Outrage And Acts Of Gaiety, Aubrie Powell

Shared Knowledge Conference

The Tiny Desk concert series features live video-recorded performances of artists at the desk of NPR Music's Bob Boilen, the series' main host. This thesis interrogates NPR Music's values and the ways artists both manifest and queer those ideals in performance. I argue, in light of the 2016 election, performers challenge NPR Music's taste system through two modes of subversion. The first mode considers vocalities of outrage specifically in the performances of Saul Williams and the Drive-By Truckers. These performers shift their social positions in expressions of outrage through vocality-as the embodied materiality of the voice and its constructed meanings …

Biomimetic Electrospun Films For Effective Radiative Cooling Under Sunlight, Bokyung Park, In Chul Um, Sang M. Han, Sang Eon Han

Shared Knowledge Conference

We demonstrate that natural silk can be restructured by electrospinning into nanoscale morphology mimicking white beetle scales for enhanced radiative cooling. While natural silk cocoons exhibit strong broadband light scattering by Anderson localization, for exceptionally strong scattering, white beetle scales rely on different physics that remains largely unclear. By electrospinning regenerated silk, we create silk films where the fibers are a quarter micron in mean diameter and randomly oriented in the plane directions, similar to white beetle scale structures. Relative to raw silk films, the restructured silk films substantially increase optical scattering strength in the visible spectrum and emissivity in …

Managing Teacher/Coach Role Conflict, Christopher Mellor, Karen Gaudreault Nov 2019

Managing Teacher/Coach Role Conflict, Christopher Mellor, Karen Gaudreault

Shared Knowledge Conference

Teacher education programs place a great deal of emphasis on proper pedagogy and the effectiveness of a teacher. However, if novice teachers are unable to identify, process, and confront socialization issues then there is a significant chance that reality shock and washout will set-in. Physical education teacher education curriculum needs to place importance on socialization issues and proper pedagogy, because one without the other decreases the chances that pre-service teachers will have a holistic view of the process of teaching. Physical educators are often asked to coach because of the perceived similarities between physical education and coaching. Teacher/coach role conflict …
