This dissertation investigates the relational conditions enabling institutional transformation and diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) within STEM higher education. Despite needs for systemic change, sustaining faculty engagement remains difficult due to entrenched power dynamics, lack of pedagogical training, and political repression. To address these barriers this research introduces Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCB) as an analytic lens and functional infrastructure for change.

This dissertation analyzes one of the few publicly available NFL injury datasets to study field type and non-contact lower-limb injuries. Field type is studied jointly with other risk factors to understand how these factors interact to affect injury risk. The data were gathered through a case-control sampling scheme, which limits direct inference on absolute injury probabilities. While not the most common approach for case-control data, this dissertation models the retrospective distribution directly through Log-Linear General Location Models (Log-Linear GLOMs). Sandia's refurbished $Z$-pinch machine experiences persistent current loss in its post-hole convolute and inner magnetically insulated transmission line regions, widely attributed to low-density electrode plasmas whose formation and transport remain poorly constrained by existing diagnostics. This dissertation develops and validates a fiber-coupled, continuous-wave, second-harmonic orthogonally polarized dispersion interferometer for time-resolved measurements of electron areal density in millimeter-scale gaps. The diagnostic employs single-laser second-harmonic generation, non-steering differential phase control, and polarization-based phase retrieval to achieve sub-$10^{15}$~cm$^{-2}$ sensitivity, multi-hundred-megahertz bandwidth, and sub-$200$~$\mu$m effective cross-gap spatial resolution. Performance is benchmarked against a $94$~GHz interferometer on the UNM Helicon-Cathode plasma device and then fielded …

Photoionization is a key mechanism governing the formation and propagation of streamer discharges in air by generating electron-ion pairs ahead of the streamer front. Accurate and computationally efficient modeling of this non-local process is essential for reliable plasma simulations. However, the widely used Zheleznyak photoionization model relies on empirical assumptions and requires computationally expensive domain-wide integration.
This dissertation advances photoionization modeling in three ways. Modern beam-based materials research demands electron sources with increasingly precise time resolution, high brightness, and stability. For example, there are various instruments across the U.S. dedicated to ultrafast electron diffraction (UED), but fewer are dedicated to ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM), which demands beam stability. Modeling femtosecond electron bunches with ultra-low emittance < 50 nm-rad inside a 1.6-cell S-band (2856 MHz) rf photoinjector with full 3D electromagnetic simulations can require high-performance computing (HPC) environments due to the scale disparity between the macroscopic cavity geometry and the femtosecond-scale bunch kinematics. To enable optimization in a desktop computing environment, this work presents a streamlined 3D electromagnetic Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulation framework optimized for 400-femtosecond bunch regimes. The covariance method was employed to study emittance properties for electron bunch counts ranging from thousands to millions and has successfully resolved highly transient, pure rf phase-space rotations, such as a localized energy-spread minimum occurring at the gun exit iris. To overcome the computational cost of these simulations, a machine-learning-based Bayesian optimization approach was deployed to construct multi-objective Pareto fronts from sparse datasets. Because the simulation software is scalable from desktop to HPC facilities, the framework is ready for experiments at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

RFSoCs are gaining adoption in many labs for quantum control systems thanks to their compactness and affordability. Making full use of the many components on an RFSoC evaluation board is a challenging engineering problem that must be solved to realize scalable control systems. In this dissertation, I evaluate the performance of various RFSoC components in the context of quantum information science. I present two custom FPGA engines that accelerate and parallelize arbitrary waveform generation. vehicles and renewable technologies, demand more intelligent and robust
management systems. Traditional methods often fail when faced with unpredictable
electricity prices and user behavior. This dissertation addresses this gap by presenting
a novel personalized framework combining detailed household energy modeling with
a risk-aware reinforcement learning agent for appliance scheduling.

Multi-robot systems can extend manipulation capabilities beyond the limits of a single robot, particularly for tasks involving large, flexible, delicate, or free-floating payloads. Reliable cooperative manipulation, however, remains difficult when payload dynamics, contact geometry, compliance properties, deformation-induced forces, and external disturbances are only partially known, and when safety constraints must be enforced during physical interaction. This dissertation develops a two-layer control framework for resilient multi-robot manipulation under uncertainty, with emphasis on space servicing, satellite stabilization, aerial transportation, and cooperative manipulation of free-floating structures.

The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions, attitudes, and experiences of dental hygienists regarding the use of lasers in the non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease. A descriptive survey was distributed via email to current active and inactive members of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. The sample consisted of practicing dental hygienists who had received training in laser use and lived in states that allowed laser use by dental hygienists. Measuring topology and initial direction of low-energy (keV-MeV) particle tracks is interesting to rare-event searches. While directional dark matter searches have been one of the largest drivers for R&D for low-energy directional detectors, this work is interested in its application to Migdal searches. The Migdal effect—a nuclear recoil and an electron recoil sharing a vertex—has been used as a detection channel for low-mass dark matter but has only recently been measured. Low-energy directional detectors are ideal to measure the canonic Migdal topology. On Sunday, July 12, the surface of Lake Powell was 3524.32 feet above sea level, and the surface of Lake Mead was at 1042.77 ft.7 These elevations equated to 5,505,869 and 7,169,640 acre feet (af), respectively, of live storage in the two reservoirs. The combined total live storage of these reservoirs was 12,675,509 af. The last time the combined total live storage in Lake Powell and Lake Mead was this small was May 23, 1957, during construction of Glen Canyon Dam when the entire amount of 12,668,000 af was stored in Lake Mead.

This presentation examines how land dispossession, environmental degradation, and capitalist economic transformations shape youth migration among the Indigenous Pijao people of Southern Tolima, Colombia. Based on semi-structured interviews with Pijao community members from different generations, the talk explores how limited economic opportunities, environmental degradation, and unequal access to land make it increasingly difficult for young people to remain in their territories. At the same time, youth migration affects the transmission of Indigenous knowledge, including oral histories, agricultural practices, language, and community memory. The well-documented tendency of people to be poor estimators of their relative abilities can be problematic in real life. These errors in are highly asymmetric: the worst performers dramatically overestimate their relative ability, whereas the best performers underestimate theirs (Kruger & Dunning, 1999). There are two possible causes of this misjudgment of relative ability: 1) participants are poor estimators of their own performance, or 2) participants are poor estimators of the comparison group’s performance. Kruger and Dunning (1999) attributed overestimation in the worst performers to the former problem but attributed the underestimation in the best performers to the latter problem. …

Disaster Justice reflects the intersection of environmental justice and disaster law. The study of disaster justice is becoming increasingly essential as disasters become more frequent and devastating in the face of accelerating climate change. Disaster law is marked by statutes such as the federal Stafford Act and by theory such as the “disaster cycle” of readiness, response, and recovery. Environmental justice recognizes that the distribution of harms such as bad air or water quality may be distributed inequitably among groups such as low-income populations or racial minorities. Purpose: The augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) discipline currently lacks psychometrically sound aided language measures. This thesis is designed to address one step in developing such measures: to begin to establish the clinical feasibility of three pragmatic measures – communicative intent, independence/co-construction, and imitation/non-imitation. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to identify the useability of these pragmatic measures.
Method: A qualitative approach in the form of a focus group was used to examine the perceptions of SLP practitioners who are experts in AAC. Rapid qualitative analysis (RQA) was used to identify relevant themes and subthemes.

VeriBrief is a multi-agent retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system for evidence-grounded economic policy analysis. The system orchestrates a five-stage LangGraph pipeline, retrieval, research, analysis, synthesis, and critique, to produce cited, structured responses while detecting out-of-scope queries. An empirical evaluation on eight questions drawn from official U.S. macroeconomic releases compared VeriBrief against a single-pass RAG baseline. The multi-agent system achieved 100% refusal precision on unanswerable analytical queries versus 0% for the baseline. Unsupported claims fell substantially on answerable factual questions. A context-propagation defect discovered during evaluation was diagnosed and corrected. Limitations include failure of the evidence gate on policy-counterfactual queries and a …

This study aims to examine the presence of coloniality in the film The Fever (A Febre), directed by Maya Da-Rin, while also addressing linguistic aspects, particularly the interplay between the indigenous Tukano language and Portuguese throughout the narrative. It further explores the relationship between language, identity, and culture. The analysis is grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Carey-Webb (2024), Quijano (2007), Kaká Werá (1998), Othero (2017), Karnal (2024), Bourdieu (1991), and Maher (2010). The results show how the effects of colonization continue to impact Indigenous communities and how forced bilingualism reflects the mechanisms of structural racism. Additionally, the use of …

Este ensayo aborda el libro de cuentos de la escritora ecuatoriana Mónica Ojeda, quien, en sus escritos, relata con fantasía, inmersión onírica y mitos los procesos histórico-sociales del Ecuador contemporáneo. Se analizarán dos cuentos del texto: Las voladoras (2020), debido a su contenido fantástico; y Sangre Coagulada, por su uso de animales en diferentes contextos cotidianos. Asimismo, cada uno de los cuentos destaca con literacidad y relevancia social, los temores, rechazos, violencia de género y machismo que aún hoy en día se viven en Ecuador y muchas zonas de América Latina.

“El hijo del vampiro” de Julio Cortázar es una obra gótica que enmarca y destaca las características del vampiro clásico dentro de la literatura. A través del cuento, Cortázar crítica al sistema patriarcal mediante personajes como Duggu Van, símbolo del patriarcado, el cual abusa sexualmente de Lady Vanda. La violencia física, sistemática y simbólica son ejecutadas por dicho personaje a lo largo del cuento. La historia refleja cómo los roles de género tradicionales perpetúan la misoginia, y cómo esta es heredada en el hijo vampírico, fruto de la violación entre Duggu Van hacia Lady Vanda.

El presente artículo se dedica a indagar las ambivalencias de la experiencia maternal y el deterioro de las relaciones maternofiliales a partir del retrato crudo e incómodo que Sanz ofrece en las páginas de Animales domésticos (2003). Como es notorio, el papel de la madre abnegada y cuidadosa es el que tradicionalmente se ha asignado a las mujeres. Se presupone que el instinto materno emerge de manera natural y se espera que la experiencia de la maternidad constituye una fuente de gratificación incondicional, excluyendo toda posibilidad de ambivalencia emocional.
