Equal Protection For Children: Toward The Childist Legal Studies, Hiroharu Saito May 2020

Equal Protection For Children: Toward The Childist Legal Studies, Hiroharu Saito

New Mexico Law Review

This Article focuses on one doctrinal question, which has not yet been examined by the Supreme Court of the United States: the appropriate review standard for discriminations against children (children qua children) under the Equal Protection Clause. This Article extensively argues, by applying the traditional three-factor criteria (visible and immutable/irreversible trait, limited access to politics, and existence of prejudice), that we should treat children as a suspect or quasi-suspect class and that we should apply heighted scrutiny for children–adults classifications. It also refutes erroneous arguments commonly seen in the courts that have justified the application of rational basis review for …

Tetraspanin Cd82 Drives Acute Myeloid Leukemia Chemoresistance By Modulating Protein Kinase C Alpha And Β1 Integrin Activation, Muskan Floren, Sebastian Restrepo Cruz, Christina M. Termini, Kristopher D. Marjon, Keith A. Lidke, Jennifer M. Gillette May 2020

Tetraspanin Cd82 Drives Acute Myeloid Leukemia Chemoresistance By Modulating Protein Kinase C Alpha And Β1 Integrin Activation, Muskan Floren, Sebastian Restrepo Cruz, Christina M. Termini, Kristopher D. Marjon, Keith A. Lidke, Jennifer M. Gillette

Pathology Research and Scholarship

A principal challenge in treating acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is chemotherapy refractory disease. As such, there remains a critical need to identify key regulators of chemotherapy resistance in AML. In this study, we demonstrate that the membrane scaffold, CD82, contributes to the chemoresistant phenotype of AML. Using an RNA-seq approach, we identified the increased expression of the tetraspanin family member, CD82, in response to the chemotherapeutic, daunorubicin. Analysis of the TARGET and BEAT AML databases identifies a correlation between CD82 expression and overall survival of AML patients. Moreover, using a combination of cell lines and patient samples, we find that …

Adolescent Mental Health In The Developing World: Three Economic Analyses On Stressors, Coping, And Support, Siobhan K. Yilmaz May 2020

Adolescent Mental Health In The Developing World: Three Economic Analyses On Stressors, Coping, And Support, Siobhan K. Yilmaz

Economics ETDs

Adolescents are slowly being recognized as a generation, worldwide, that may require different policy approaches to improve staggering statistics on their failing wellbeing, including mental health. By providing the support to allow the next generation to achieve better mental health outcomes, they are going to be more economically successful and the future economic growth of nations can be better assured. In face of such a need, this dissertation approaches the evaluation of a number of key stressors and elements of coping and support. Each chapter produces results which overcome limitations throughout existing literature in terms of the simultaneous consideration of …

Towards Gross-Pitaevskiian Description Of Solar System & Galaxies, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati May 2020

Towards Gross-Pitaevskiian Description Of Solar System & Galaxies, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we argue that Gross-Pitaevskii model can be a more complete description of both solar system and spiral galaxies, especially taking into account the nature of chirality and vortices in galaxies. We also hope to bring out some correspondence among existing models, e.g., the topological vortex approach, Burgers equation in the light of KAM theory, and the Cantorian Navier-Stokes approach. We hope further investigation can be done around this line of approach.

Students’ Perspectives Toward A Curriculum That Incorporates Their Input, Janneth V. Chumana

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

ABSTRACT

This study describes the relationship between students’ attitudes, beliefs and perceptions about the foreign language curriculum at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador for the A2.2 (elementary advanced) level class and the students’ learning outcomes. It explores the factors that influence the attitudes and perceptions of undergraduate EFL students toward a curriculum as well as what happens when they are involved in the classroom curriculum development. The study took place in the spring of 2019, confirming its usefulness in the changing of students’ attitudes towards the English language learning process. At the same time it provided effective information to the …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

To evaluate progress toward prevention of enteric illnesses, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) of CDC's Emerging Infections Program monitors the incidence of laboratory-diagnosed infections caused by eight pathogens transmitted commonly through food at 10 U.S. sites.* This report summarizes preliminary 2019 data and describes changes in incidence compared with that during 2016-2018. The incidence of enteric infections caused by these eight pathogens reported by FoodNet sites in 2019 continued to increase or remained unchanged, indicating progress in controlling major foodborne pathogens in the United States has stalled. Campylobacter and Salmonella caused the largest proportion of illnesses; trends in …

Essay: Cyberbullying And Freedom Of Speech, David L. Hudson Jr. May 2020

Essay: Cyberbullying And Freedom Of Speech, David L. Hudson Jr.

New Mexico Law Review

Cyberbullying remains an issue of paramount concern to school administrators, legislators, parents, students, and others. Some have called it an epidemic and the scourge of our times. This essay examines cyberbullying from a First Amendment perspective by discussing both (1) cyberbullying laws and (2) court decisions dealing with cyberbullying. Cyberbullying laws fall into two general categories. Those that are general criminal statutes and those that empower school officials to discipline students for code of conduct violations. This essay samples a few of these laws. The essay also examines court decisions dealing with cyberbullying – both criminal law and school law …
