The Role Of Interleukin-10 In Regulating Neuroinflammation Relevant To Tauopathies, Lea L. Weston, Shanya Jiang, Devon Chisholm, Kiran Bhaskar Jan 2021

The Role Of Interleukin-10 In Regulating Neuroinflammation Relevant To Tauopathies, Lea L. Weston, Shanya Jiang, Devon Chisholm, Kiran Bhaskar

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Tauopathies are neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, that are associated with pathological accumulation of the microtubule associated protein tau (MAPT, or tau) (Lee et al., 2001). Abnormal hyperphosphorylated tau (pTau) strongly correlate with cognitive impairment (Nelson et al., 2012). Neuroinflammation is also associated with tauopathies (Gerhard et al., 2006b; Edison et al., 2008) and is implicated in driving tau pathology (Yoshiyama et al., 2007, Maphis et al., 2015b). Therefore, it is compelling to understand the role of anti-inflammatory cytokines in limiting neuroinflammation and tau pathology. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a well-established anti-inflammatory cytokine with roles in limiting inflammation in the central …

Reversal Of Prenatal Alcohol-Induced Deficits In Long-Term Potentiation By The Histamine H3 Inverse Agonist Sar153954, Monica Goncalves-Garcia, Suzy Davies, Daniel D. Savage, Derek A. Hamilton Jan 2021

Reversal Of Prenatal Alcohol-Induced Deficits In Long-Term Potentiation By The Histamine H3 Inverse Agonist Sar153954, Monica Goncalves-Garcia, Suzy Davies, Daniel D. Savage, Derek A. Hamilton

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Cognitive impairments are common consequences of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The hippocampus is susceptible to the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) which persist throughout an individual’s life. Previous studies have identified deficits in long-term potentiation (LTP) in perforant pathway to dentate gyrus synapses as an adverse consequence of PAE. Although there have been numerous investigations, PAE-induced deficits in synaptic plasticity remain poorly understood. Currently, there are no known, clinically effective pharmacotherapeutic interventions for these deficits. This study investigated the effects of PAE on LTP in the dentate gyrus and the H3 receptor inverse agonist, SAR152954, as a candidate …

Ultralow Velocities Of Caco3 And The Origin Of Seismic Anomalies In The Earth's Upper Mantle, Mingqiang Hou, Ming Hao, Jin Liu, Xiaowan Su, Wen-Yi Zhou, Jin S. Zhang, Rostislav Hrubiak

Earth and Planetary Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a major mineral host for CO2 in deep Earth. The physical and chemical properties of CaCO3 at extreme pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions are important for understanding the CO2 circulation between the Earth's surface and interior primarily via volcanism and subduction. Using the pulse-echo-overlap method combined with Paris-Edinburgh (PE) press, we measured velocities of CaCO3 under upper mantle conditions and observed an anomalous velocity drop associated with the amorphization of aragonite. The compressional (VP) and shear (VS) wave velocities of the partially amorphized CaCO …

Solving Neutrosophic Linear Equations Systems Using Symbolic Computation (Resolucion De Sistemas De Ecuaciones Lineales Neutrosóficas Mediante Computación Simbólica), Maykel Leyva-Vazquez, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we apply the concept of neutrosophic numbers to solve a systems of neutrophic linear equations using symbolic computation. Also, we utilize Jupyter, which is supported in Google Colaboratory for performing symbolic computation. The sympy library of Python is used to perform the process of neutrosophic computation. Systems of neutrosophic linear equations are solved through symbolic computation in Python. A case study was developed for the determination of vehicular traffic with indeterminacy. This king of computation opens new ways to deal with indeterminacy in real-world problems.

Techno-Art Of Selariu Supermathematics Functions, Vol. Iii, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The name of supermathematics (SM) was coined by the late mathematician Prof. em. Dr. doc. eng. Gheorghe Silaş who, at the presentation of the first works in this field, at the First National Conference of Vibrations in Machine Construction, Timişoara, 1978, entitled “EXCENTRIC CIRCULAR FUNCTIONS” declared: “Young man, you didn't just discover some new functions, but a new mathematics, a supermathematics”. Then, at my age of 40, I was as happy as I was when a teenager. And I found, with great satisfaction, that he might be right! In 1978! In 2000, after 22 years, he offered me to write …

In general, in any field of knowledge, with respect to any structure, one has the following neutrosophic triplet . They were introduced by Smarandache in 2019 and 2020.

1) A classical Structure is a structure whose all elements are characterized by the same given Relationships and Attributes and Laws.

2) A NeutroStructure is a structure that has at least one NeutroRelation or one NeutroAttribute or one NeutroLaw, and no AntiRelation and no AntiAttribute and no AntiLaw.

3) An AntiStructure is a structure that has at least one AntiRelation or one AntiAttribute or one AntiLaw.

As a particular case, in the …

Improvement Of Proportional Conflict Redistribution Rules Of Combination Of Basic Belief Assignments, Theo Dezert, Jean Dezert, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper discusses and analyzes the behaviors of the Proportional Conflict Redistribution rules no. 5 (PCR5) and no. 6 (PCR6) to combine several distinct sources of evidence characterized by their basic belief assignments defined over the same frame of discernment. After a brief review of these rules, the paper shows through simple examples why their behaviors can sometimes increase the uncertainty more than necessary, which is detrimental to decision-making support drawn from the result of the combination. We present a theoretical improvement of these rules, and establish new PCR5+ and PCR6+ rules of combination. These new rules overcome the weakness of …

Comments On “A New Combination Of Evidence Based On Compromise” By K. Yamada, Jean Dezert, Arnaud Martin, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Yamada (2008) presents an interesting new model of combination of evidence called combination by compromise based on previous works published in Yamada (2006b,a). In the theory of belief functions, one of the most important problems is the one of reassigning the conflicting belief mass, as highlighted by the famous Zadeh’s example, see Zadeh (1979). To date, many combination rules have been developed, proposing a solution to this problem.

Taxing Power Delegation For Better Environmental Regulation: A Proposal On Federal Carbon Tax Policymaking, Kaijie Wu Jan 2021

Taxing Power Delegation For Better Environmental Regulation: A Proposal On Federal Carbon Tax Policymaking, Kaijie Wu

Natural Resources Journal

In view of the stalled situation in climate change lawmaking, transferring the focus from direct congressional lawmaking to the possibility of delegated lawmaking by agencies may provide a new perspective to break the gridlock of federal carbon tax legislation. Taxes, however, in practice are generally less delegable than environmental and other regulations. Specifically, the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury are not permitted to determine tax rates. This is also the case for environmental taxes in the Internal Revenue Code. Though some environmental statutes seem to provide some implied and untested delegation of power to regulate by taxation, the Environmental Protection …

Fracking The Bakken: Interpreting The Public Trust Doctrine And State Constitutional Law To Restrict Fracking Under Beneficial Use Principles, Cormac Bloomfield

Natural Resources Journal

This Note tackles the intersection of state constitutional law, the Public Trust Doctrine, prior appropriation case law, and insufficient safeguards around fracking’s water-intensive practices. Typically operating with lax state oversight, modern day fracking depletes needed water resources from water-scarce regions while simultaneously contaminating public water resources that remain. Conservationists should, and must, turn to state constitutional law and common law public trust doctrine developments to achieve judicial intervention of a poorly regulated industry. By advancing modern understandings of beneficial use and anti-waste principles under western states’ prior appropriation systems of water ownership, courts can ensure greater protections of public water …

“Preservative Of All Other Rights”: Voting And Social Justice In The Post-Trump Era, Vinay Harpalani

Faculty Scholarship

As social justice advocates rejoice over Donald Trump’s defeat and look for paths forward, the biggest lesson comes from the 2020 presidential election itself. The right to vote is “preservative of all other rights[,]” and this past year underscored its importance more than ever. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, high voter turnout—and especially high Black voter turnout—propelled Joe Biden to victory. Even as the Electoral College and partisan gerrymandering continue to undermine the popular will, America’s changing demographics favor people of color and progressives. Moreover, the elected branches of government have become more significant because Trump packed the …

Pore Space Property, Joseph A. Schremmer Jan 2021

Pore Space Property, Joseph A. Schremmer

Faculty Scholarship

Through modern technology we can use the void pore space of underground rock formations for a growing number of socially beneficial purposes. These run the gamut from unconventional oil and gas production to climate change mitigation. The common law of property and tort, however, has struggled to keep up with advancing technology in this area. Significant questions remain about the nature of property rights in pore space. Of particular interest are the limits, if any, on an owner’s right to use pore space for beneficial purposes when it extends beneath the land of another. For example, may A hydraulically fracture …

The Rise Of Force Majeure Amid Coronavirus Pandemic: Legitimacy And Implications For Energy Laws And Contracts, Cosmos Nike Nwedu Jan 2021

The Rise Of Force Majeure Amid Coronavirus Pandemic: Legitimacy And Implications For Energy Laws And Contracts, Cosmos Nike Nwedu

Natural Resources Journal

The global outbreak of coronavirus disease has become one of humanity’s current greatest challenges and may arguably surpass climate change in the short-term. The virus’s rapid dispersion through the transportation sector, its disruption to human health and global economies, has been remarkable. The energy sector has also been impacted, as it has seen episodic low prices of oil, particularly in April 2020. This scenario is due to less demand for oil amid various containment measures and related health policies of governments worldwide. The performance of existing oil and gas contracts, especially time-bound supply contracts, has been rendered impracticable in some …

Robert Brace And The Shifting Sands Of The Administrative State, Thomas Philbrick Jan 2021

Robert Brace And The Shifting Sands Of The Administrative State, Thomas Philbrick

Natural Resources Journal

Pennsylvania farmer Robert Brace was sued by the federal government in 1987 for repairs he had made to an existing drainage system on his farm. The Third Circuit Court of Appeals held in 1994 that Brace’s repair activities did not constitute “normal agricultural activity” and were therefore subject to Clean Water Act regulation. After thirty years of battling the government, Brace has now filed an $8 million administrative action against the Environmental Protection Agency, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service requesting financial compensation for improper regulatory enforcement that has resulted in millions of …

Monopolizers Of The Soil: The Commons As A Source Of Public Trust Responsibilities, Connor B. Mcdermott Jan 2021

Monopolizers Of The Soil: The Commons As A Source Of Public Trust Responsibilities, Connor B. Mcdermott

Natural Resources Journal

In the seventeenth century, public resources were essential to the survival of the English poor. The common law, stretching back to Magna Carta and the Forest Charter, provided them with usufructuary rights to the commons. Those rights were violated by the enclosure movement, which received royal assent beginning with Charles I’s absolutist reign in 1625. As a result, the common people joined with Parliament to overthrow Charles I. After the Interregnum, Matthew Hale wrote De Jure Maris, a treatise foundational to the public trust doctrine in America and the doctrine’s expansion abroad. Hale lived through the Civil War which resulted …

The Colorado River Drought Contingency Plan: An Opportunity For Exploring Demand Management Through Integrated And Collaborative Water Planning, Daniel Spivak Jan 2021

The Colorado River Drought Contingency Plan: An Opportunity For Exploring Demand Management Through Integrated And Collaborative Water Planning, Daniel Spivak

Natural Resources Journal

The Upper Basin Colorado River Drought Contingency Plan (“DCP”), signed May 2019, was created to maintain sufficient Lake Powell storage levels for consumptive water demand and for hydropower generation. One of the most important requirements of the DCP is the obligation for Upper Basin states to explore the feasibility of demand management programs for their respective states. This exploratory process is ongoing for Upper Basin states. The DCP exploratory process, as well as the potential implementation of demand management programs, offer unique opportunities for water professionals to increase the role of public engagement in the implementation of a particular type …

Book Review: Science Be Dammed: How Ignoring Inconvenient Science Drained The Colorado River, Jeffrey Hoagland

Natural Resources Journal

John Fleck and Eric Kuhn weave together two narratives; one is a narrative of place, as the hydrology of the Colorado River shifts, capitulates, and finally collapses due to westward expansion. The second is a narrative of time, as people waste precious days, months, and years haggling over their slices of water—without ever asking just how big the pie is that they are fighting over.

Book Review: The Rule Of Five, Ashlee Carrasco Jan 2021

Book Review: The Rule Of Five, Ashlee Carrasco

Natural Resources Journal

The Rule of Five reads like a novel that ought to be adapted for the big screen, despite its accurate overview of the landmark Supreme Court case, Massachusetts v. EPA. Richard J. Lazarus does an excellent job of honoring the legacy of those who fought long and hard to bring the issue of climate change to the Supreme Court for the first time. While the decision in Massachusetts v. EPA was a landmark decision handed down by the Supreme Court of the United States, the potential to bore the reader with procedural history and legal jargon was ever-present. However, Lazarus …

Neural Network Based Occupancy Prediction Using Patterns Detected In Wifi Occupancy, Krishna Chaitanya Jagadeesh Simma, Thomas P. Caudell, Susan M. Bogus

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The role of occupants in building energy management is well established. Occupant information from commercial buildings can function as a metric for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) loads. Predicting these loads ahead in time could aid in setting up HVAC protocols to minimize wasteful energy demand and improve occupant comfort. To this extent, several frameworks were proposed that use occupancy data collected from commercial office buildings and graduate student offices to predict occupancy. However, the occupancy data collected in these frameworks are controlled and have limited complexity compared to larger commercial spaces such as airports, libraries, lecture halls, …

More Than Idle Talk: Examining The Effects Of Positive And Negative Team Gossip, Trevor Spoelma, Andrea Hetrick Jan 2021

More Than Idle Talk: Examining The Effects Of Positive And Negative Team Gossip, Trevor Spoelma, Andrea Hetrick

Faculty and Staff Publications

Gossip is a behavior that has been traditionally viewed as harmful in organizations. However, a more balanced perspective has emerged in recent years that suggests gossip can have important benefits. We propose that one way to uncover potential benefits of gossip in teams is to focus on the valence (positive or negative nature) of the gossip. Drawing on expectancy theory, we propose team gossip indirectly influences team performance through social loafing because it plays a key role in shaping beliefs about effort in team contexts; effects determined by team gossip valence. We hypothesize that positive team gossip decreases social loafing, …
