Why Get A Warrant When You Can Fly Over The Wall? The Constitutionality Of Aerial Surveillance Without A Warrant, Royce A. Deller Jan 2021

Why Get A Warrant When You Can Fly Over The Wall? The Constitutionality Of Aerial Surveillance Without A Warrant, Royce A. Deller

New Mexico Law Review

Individuals in and around their home have a reasonable expectation of privacy from warrantless, ground-level surveillance because the curtilage of the home, like the home itself, is protected from searches and seizures. This is settled Fourth Amendment law. The curtilage of a home is “the area to which extends the intimate activity associated with the ‘sanctity of a man’s home and the privacies of life.’” Less clear, however, is whether there is a reasonable expectation of privacy from aerial surveillance. One would be forgiven for assuming one enjoys an expectation of privacy from surveillance in the curtilage of one’s own …

Florid Mesothelial Hyperplasia Associated With Abdominal Wall Endometriosis Mimicking Invasive Carcinoma, Edgar G. Fischer, Shweta Agarwal Jan 2021

Florid Mesothelial Hyperplasia Associated With Abdominal Wall Endometriosis Mimicking Invasive Carcinoma, Edgar G. Fischer, Shweta Agarwal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Florid mesothelial hyperplasia typically occurs in the pelvis, abdomen, or chest associated with an underlying neoplastic or inflammatory process. These lesions are of clinical significance because they can mimic a neoplasm. Early reports were published in the 1970s, but only a few case series of such lesions have been published in the gynecologic pathology literature. Here, we report a case of florid mesothelial hyperplasia with an infiltrative growth pattern, mimicking an invasive carcinoma. The lesion was associated with endometriosis forming a mass lesion in the abdominal wall. Histologically, tubular arrangements and nests of mesothelial cells, some with artifactual slit-like spaces, …

Pleiotropic Anticoagulant Functions Of Protein S, Consequences For The Clinical Laboratory. Communication From The Ssc Of The Isth, Herm Jan M. Brinkman, Josefin Ahnström, Elisabetta Castoldi, Björn Dahlbäck, Richard A. Marlar Jan 2021

Marlar

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Hereditary deficiencies of protein S (PS) increase the risk of thrombosis. However, assessing the plasma levels of PS is complicated by its manifold physiological interactions, while the large inter-individual variability makes it problematic to establish reliable cut-off values. PS has multiple physiological functions, with only two appearing to have significant anticoagulant properties: the activated protein C (APC) and tissue factor pathway inhibitor alpha (TFPIα) cofactor activities. Current clinical laboratory investigations for deficiency in PS function rely only on the APC-dependent activity. This communication presents an argument for reclassifying the qualitative PS deficiencies to differentiate the two major anticoagulant functions of …

Recommendations For Clinical Laboratory Testing For Protein S Deficiency: Communication From The Ssc Committee Plasma Coagulation Inhibitors Of The Isth, Richard A. Marlar, Jana N. Gausman, Hiroko Tsuda, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Herm Jan M. Brinkman

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Hereditary deficiencies of protein S (PS) increase the risk of venous thrombosis; however, assessing the plasma levels of PS can be difficult because of its complex physiological interactions in plasma, sample-related preanalytical variables, and numerous acquired disease processes. Reliable laboratory assays are essential for accurate evaluation of PS when diagnosing a congenital deficiency based on the plasma phenotype alone. This report presents the current evidence-based recommendations for clinical PS assays as well as when to test for PS abnormalities.

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Hematopathology fellowship education has grown in complexity as patient-centered treatment plans have come to depend on integration of clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, molecular, and cytogenetic variables. This complexity is in competition with the need for timely hematopathology care with stewardship of patient, laboratory, and societal resources. Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones provide a guidance document for hematopathology training, but fellows and their educators are in need of a simple framework that allows assessment and feedback of growth toward independent hematopathology practice. Entrustable professional activities provide one such framework, and herein, we provide proposed Hematopathology Fellowship Entrustable Professional Activities based …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

INTRODUCTION: Urine self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV)-based cervical cancer screening is a non-invasive method that offers several logistical advantages and high acceptability, reducing barriers related to low screening coverage. This study developed and evaluated the performance of a low-cost urine self-sampling method for HPV-testing and explored the acceptability and feasibility of potential implementation of this alternative in routine screening.

METHODS: A series of sequential laboratory assays examined the impact of several pre-analytical conditions for obtaining DNA from urine and subsequent HPV detection. Initially, we assessed the effect of ethylaminediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a DNA preservative examining several variables including EDTA …

Tall Cell Variant Of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: Recognizing A Rare Aggressive Variant, Shweta Agarwal Jan 2021

Tall Cell Variant Of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: Recognizing A Rare Aggressive Variant, Shweta Agarwal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Papillary Thyroid Cancer (PTC) accounts for 80–90% of all thyroid malignancies [1]. The most common morphology is the classical papillary which has an indolent course. Aggressive variants exist, of which Tall Cell Variant (TCV) is the most common. TCV is defined as a PTC in which 30% or more of tumor cells are 2-3 times as long as they are wide [1,2]. The histology image (Figure 1A, magnification 4x) shows tumor cells arranged back to back with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, and typical nuclear features of PTC; namely overlapping enlarged nuclei, intranuclear grooves, and occasional pseudoinclusions. Figure 1B (magnification: 20x) shows …

Disseminated Coccidioidomycosis In An Immunocompetent Patient: Report Of A Case And Review Of The Literature, Jordan P. Redemann, Karla A. Thornton, Jay S. Raval, Mohammed Vasef Jan 2021

Disseminated Coccidioidomycosis In An Immunocompetent Patient: Report Of A Case And Review Of The Literature, Jordan P. Redemann, Karla A. Thornton, Jay S. Raval, Mohammed Vasef

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Coccidioidomycosis is endemic to the Southwestern United States as well as parts of Mexico, Central, and South America. Coccidioides infection is typically subclinical or mild and self-limited. Disseminated coccidioidomycosis is uncommon except in immunosuppressed, post-transplant, or pregnant patients. Disseminated coccidioides in immunocompetent individuals is rare. We report a case of a young, apparently immunocompetent, individual who developed disseminated coccidiomycosis diagnosed at the time of a bedside splenectomy for abdominal decompression. Clinical and histological findings are discussed with review of literature.

Primary Temporal Bone Meningioma Presenting As Chronic Mastoiditis And Sigmoid Sinus Thrombosis: Report Of A Case With Literature Analysis, Mary Torrez, Edgar Fischer, Shweta Agarwal Jan 2021

Primary Temporal Bone Meningioma Presenting As Chronic Mastoiditis And Sigmoid Sinus Thrombosis: Report Of A Case With Literature Analysis, Mary Torrez, Edgar Fischer, Shweta Agarwal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Primary extra cranial meningioma of the ear and temporal bone are exceedingly rare, making up less than 1% of all meningiomas. Histologically, they are indistinguishable from their intracranial counterpart. The histopathologic diagnosis is often challenging, and the differential diagnosis for neoplasms in this unusual location is quite extensive. We report a 64-year-old male patient with history of seizures who presented with coalescing mastoiditis and sigmoid sinus thrombosis. CT and MRI findings were suggestive of a chronic inflammatory process. Operative findings included a flesh-colored mass extending from the mastoid antrum posteriorly towards the Sigmoid sinus. Intraoperative consultation was requested, yielding a …

Neanderthal Ecology In Western Iberia: The Case From Lapa Do Picareiro, Milena Moreira De Carvalho Jan 2021

Neanderthal Ecology In Western Iberia: The Case From Lapa Do Picareiro, Milena Moreira De Carvalho

Anthropology ETDs

In Iberia, potentially the last place where Neanderthals survived, the demographic breakdown of small, loosely connected populations seems to have been a significant driver their demise. Human responses to the climatic fluctuations of the Late Pleistocene, particularly Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3, could be an explanation for the decreases in Neanderthal population size during this time; it may be that habitat fragmentation and environmental instability contributed to a demographic breakdown, resulting in small, secluded Neanderthal populations that remained for some time in refugia, even after the arrival of anatomically modern humans in Europe some 40,000 years ago. In this dissertation, …

Aging And Gender In The Tsimane’: Differences In Energy Expenditure, Physical Activity, And Horticultural Work, Daniel Kruse Cummings Jan 2021

Aging And Gender In The Tsimane’: Differences In Energy Expenditure, Physical Activity, And Horticultural Work, Daniel Kruse Cummings

Anthropology ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to measure and explain age- and sex-related differences in energy expenditure, physical activity, and patterns of horticultural work, in the Tsimane’, a subsistence forager-horticulturalist population from the Bolivian Amazon. Changes in the way energy is used with advancing age has important implications for the tradeoffs negotiated within the aging body as it partitions increasingly limited energy among competing life functions. It is guided by a theoretical framework which posits the co-evolution of the unique suite of fast and slow human life history traits, cooperative production of resources, and ageand sex-specific schedules of growth, production, …

Performing Multiculturalism: Ukrainian-Canadian Identities In Transnational Politics Of Recognition, Olga Glinskii Jan 2021

Performing Multiculturalism: Ukrainian-Canadian Identities In Transnational Politics Of Recognition, Olga Glinskii

Anthropology ETDs

As a result of specific aspects of history, including historically complex diasporas, contemporary Ukrainian identities -- both socially normative and personal -- are subject to a transnational politics of recognition. Whereas Charles Taylor has done more than any other scholar to highlight obligatory and unavoidable character of the politics of identity today, his univocal approach to the relations among language, culture, and identity is inadequate for illuminating the Ukrainian situation. In this dissertation I show that Ukrainians of different sorts employ situational strategies for mobilizing a set of perspectively valid --though not always logically consistent -- historically based ontologies. I …

A Review On Electroculture, Magneticulture And Laserculture To Boostplant Growth, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

While several reviews on potential applications of electroculture are available, in this survey, we discuss these issues from history, starting from earliest experiments by Ross. And in the last section, we discuss possible application of laserculture, another form of potential improvement. It is our hope that what we present here may be found useful for improving agricultural performance in many countries, as well as reducing dependence on fertilizer.

Design Justice In Municipal Criminal Regulation, Amber Baylor Jan 2021

Design Justice In Municipal Criminal Regulation, Amber Baylor

New Mexico Law Review

This article explores design justice as a framework for deeper inclusion in municipal criminal court reform. Section I provides a brief summary of a typical litigant’s path through modern municipal courts. Then, section I explores the historic role of municipal courts, the insider/outsider dichotomy of municipal criminal regulation, and the limitations of past reform efforts. Section II shifts into an overview of participatory design and discusses the new emergence of design justice. Within the discussion of design justice, the article focuses on three precepts of design justice: excavating the history and impact of the courts, creating tools for participation, and …

Microstructural And Microchemical Studies Of Fluid–Chondrule Interactions In A Pristine Cr Carbonaceous Chondrite And Apatite In Martian Nakhlites, Marina Martínez

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

PROJECT 1: Chondrites are the most primitive objects in the solar system, aggregates of the material that formed in the solar protoplanetary disk during the first 1-5 million years of its formation. However, petrographic observations indicate that most chondrites have been modified by secondary processes, including aqueous alteration, thermal metamorphism, and shock. Fortunately, a few chondrites largely escaped these processes and are considered pristine, such as the CR carbonaceous chondrite Queen Alexandra Range (QUE) 99177. QUE 99177 is an excellent sample for deciphering information about the reactions that took place between unaltered anhydrous solar nebular components and water under highly …

Adult Children Private Facebook Group, Andrea Merriam Jan 2021

Adult Children Private Facebook Group, Andrea Merriam

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

An online forum for adult children of people with Parkinson’s allows peers living a shared experience to offer support, share tips and information, and be heard.

Living optimally despite the complex and progressive symptoms of Parkinson disease requires a team effort with caregivers and family members playing both offense and defense positions. They alternate planning and preparing for the future with responding and adjusting to the constant demands and problems encountered every day. In nearly all aging populations, adult children at some point become heavily involved in screening treatments, interventions and support. This is particularly true with PD due to …

Predictors Of In-Hospital Mortality And Length Of Stay After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: Conventional Regression Versus Machine Learning-Based Analyses, Syed Faraz Kazim, Tolga Sursal, Meic H. Schmidt, Christian A. Bowers, Chad D. Cole

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Introduction

Severe traumatic brain injury [sTBI, defined as Glasgow coma scale (GCS) < 8] is a catastrophic form of TBI associated with high rates of mortality and morbidity. Outcome prediction after sTBI is critical for clinical decision making and the realistic assessment of quality of care. In the present study, we compared conventional statistical techniques versus machine learning (ML)- based random forest model to identify predictors of hospital mortality and length of stay (LOS) in sTBI patients.

Methods

A retrospective chart review was conducted of all patients (including both adult and pediatric) with sTBI admitted between 2015-2018 (n = 168). Conventional univariate (Pearson’s correlation coefficient, r) and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to determine the predictors of mortality and hospital LOS. For random forest ML modeling, 14 variables for mortality and 12 variables for LOS were evaluated as potential splitters at each node. The variable importance (in predicting mortality or LOS) was measured based on the Gini impurity index (mean decrease Gini/IncNodePurity). The Receiving …

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Background:

Neurosurgical education across the globe has undergone a significant change as a result of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Social distancing requirements have resulted in rapid transition to virtual meetings/symposia, grand rounds, lecture presentations, journal clubs, and case conferences. The present survey was performed to characterize perceptions of neurosurgical community globally towards neurosurgical online educational resources that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods:

A 21-question anonymous REDCap-based online survey was distributed to faculty, fellows, and residents in neurosurgical residency programs in US and across the globe between February 12, 2021 and March 16, 2021. Statistical analyses were performed using …
