Educational innovations are necessary to improve student learning outcomes and motivation. However, the COVID-19 pandemic created barriers in implementing in-person strategies to facilitate students’ understanding and application of course material. To promote educational content delivery in online learning, the College of Nursing faculty have implemented revolutionary teaching methods, including escape rooms, to enhance students’ virtual learning experiences. Escapes rooms allow students to apply clinical judgement skills to escape a virtual room by integrating knowledge gained from course content. In person escape rooms promote team work principles for individuals to gather clues to “escape” their room or environment. The same techniques …

Exams are stressful for all learners. Some students feel especially anxious after walking into a classroom on test day to find their classmates frantically engaged in last-minute studying. Many students wait in their cars or stand in front of the building alone to avoid these stressful situations. Although some would rather study right up until the start of an exam, our aim was to create a calm space for those who preferred not to do so. In order to provide this relaxing environment, we reserved a room near students’ exam area; we dimmed the lights and turned on a light …

The purpose of this poster is to describe the Data Dashboard process and reflect on its effectiveness as a guiding tool for improving the complex endeavor that is a curriculum renewal. The Curriculum Committee—a representative group of about 40 medical school faculty, staff and students—overhauled ‘Phase I,’ the first two years of undergraduate medical education (UME) preceding students’ first licensure exam, Step 1. UME altered the structure of the basic science coursework; stretched the Phase by several weeks; added eight intersessions; assigned ‘core faculty’ to help block chairs with standardization; redesigned the unit for assisting struggling students; and changed requirements …

Introduction: The Covid-19 pandemic forced many nursing programs to emergently move classroom and clinical instruction to remote learning. Faculty wondered: How can we move our courses on-line? How will we teaching nursing skills and simulation? Will our students be able to progress? How do we assure rigor and quality in our programs? and What will happen with our new graduates? Specific Aims for our project: 1) Identify similar challenges that nurse educators addressed amidst the pandemic 2) Demonstrate the benefit of a university and community college nursing education consortium (or partnership model) 3) Inform nurse educators of innovative outcomes originating …

Nurse educators across New Mexico are teaching nursing course content online and are looking for fun ways to build community and engagement with learners. During 2020, the author has been investigating different online tools to share with nurse educators across the twelve New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium (NMNEC) nursing programs. After learning about the Bitmoji classrooms being utilized by K-12 educators, the author became curious about whether Bitmoji classrooms could be useful for nursing education. To trial this, the NMNEC (Bitmoji) Office was created for the 2020 Fall Virtual NMNEC Statewide Faculty Meeting and utilized as a way of sharing …

COVID-19 took the world by storm and left UNM medical students with plenty of extra time on their hands. With countless new opportunities for growth, students were able to go back to old hobbies or pick up new ones. For students who love to read, it can be difficult to find the time to get through a book with scholarly duties and deadlines looming ahead. With the uncertainty that the pandemic brought upon us, students who missed reading for pleasure had time to delve into an alternate reality and immerse themselves in the serenity of a good book. An organized …

Traditional medical education focuses on the science of medicine through lectures and clinical rotations. Yet, the art of medicine—learning compassion and empathy—and certain aspects of professional development may be best taught in other forms. Indeed, participation in The Maine Humanities Council Literature & Medicine Program led to 82% of participants self-reporting increased levels of empathy for patients. Further, incorporation of book clubs into the Pharmacy education at Purdue University led to students exploring new topics, reconsidering previously held perceptions, and better understanding of patient perspectives. In line with this, the New Mexico American College of Physicians (NMACP) Diversity, Equity and …

The AAMC recommended in March 2020 that medical schools suspend medical student involvement in clinical activities due to CoVid. In response, UNM SOM implemented a 4-week virtual course on COVID-19 for second- and third-year medical students and PA students. The course addressed the need for students to learn about public health, infectious disease, and social determinants of health. In addition, the new course provided ample opportunity for community service. The objectives of the course were lofty, but critical at this point in the students’ medical education. We wanted our students to develop leadership skills, learn about the novel Coronavirus, anticipate …

Teaching during a pandemic calls for some restructuring of traditional in-person classes and a great deal of creativity. The amount of time that students are spending online has increased dramatically, and with that comes an increased effort to keep students engaged. The traditional case study is a great teaching tool but it can be difficult to manage in a large classroom, and requires a specific progression to answer all the questions. A segmented unfolding case study is one option. Each student group is given a portion of the patient’s story along with critical thinking questions. This allows for the class …

The U.S. Census Bureau predicts that Hispanic, Black and other minority groups will constitute more than half of the U.S. population by 2044. It is therefore problematic that only about 10% of images in dermatology textbooks illustrate dermatologic conditions in dark skin. This paucity of adequate resources has affected physicians’ education and patient outcomes. A study several years ago found 47% of dermatologists and residents reported that their medical training on pathologies in Black skin was insufficient, and that there was a need for more training materials exhibiting Black skin. Black and Hispanic patients are also less likely to be …

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about abrupt changes to the PharmD curriculum, including moving all courses online during the second half of Spring 2020. This unprecedented interruption to traditional delivery required rapid response and conversion to Zoom video conferencing for all aspects of the program, including the didactic courses and Aspects of Patient Care lab. Following the spring transition, efforts to more effectively provide online instruction and resources for students became a priority. At the conclusion of the Spring semester, we elicited feedback from course Instructors of Record and current didactic students. Instructor of Record (IOR) feedback was obtained through post-semester …

BACKGROUND: Female Mexican Immigrants (FMIs) experience high rates of depression compared with other populations. For this population, depression is often exacerbated by social isolation associated with the experience of immigration. Aim 1. To measure whether a culturally situated peer group intervention will reduce depression and stress associated with the experience of immigration. Aim 2. To test whether an intervention using a "women's funds of knowledge" approach results in improved resilience, knowledge and empowerment. Aim 3. To investigate whether a culturally situated peer group intervention using a women's funds of knowledge approach can give participants a sense and experience of social …

The R-Enantiomer Of Ketorolac Reduces Ovarian Cancer Tumor Burden In Vivo, Martha M. Grimes, S Ray Kenney, Dayna R. Dominguez, Kathryn J. Brayer, Yuna Guo, Angela Wandinger-Ness, Laurie G. Hudson
Pathology Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Rho-family GTPases, including Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (Rac1) and cell division control protein 42 (Cdc42), are important modulators of cancer-relevant cell functions and are viewed as promising therapeutic targets. Based on high-throughput screening and cheminformatics we identified the R-enantiomer of an FDA-approved drug (ketorolac) as an inhibitor of Rac1 and Cdc42. The corresponding S-enantiomer is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with selective activity against cyclooxygenases. We reported previously that R-ketorolac, but not the S-enantiomer, inhibited Rac1 and Cdc42-dependent downstream signaling, growth factor stimulated actin cytoskeleton rearrangements, cell adhesion, migration and invasion in ovarian cancer cell lines and …
