The Time-To-Graduation Problem (Survival Analysis For Education Outcomes), Don R. Hush, Tushar Ojha, Wisam Al-Doroubi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This report provides a comprehensive treatment of the time-to-graduation (TTG) problem. The goal of this problem is to make predictions about the time it takes for a student to graduate from a particular institution. We develop a complete mathematical description of the TTG problem which includes data synthesis models that reveal details of the problem that are often hidden or overlooked in the literature. This report explores two vastly different approaches to this problem, including detailed algorithmic descriptions and practical examples where specific solution methods are applied to both synthetic data and real UNM student data. The first approach is …

Creating A Cancer Genomics Curriculum For Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellows: A National Needs Assessment, Alise K Murray, Rose B Mcgee, Roya M Mostafavi, Xiaoqing Wang, Zhaohua Lu, Jessica M Valdez, Michael A Terao, Kim E Nichols

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: With the advent of next generation sequencing, tumor and germline genomic testing are increasingly being used in the management of pediatric cancer patients. Despite this increase in testing, many pediatric hematology-oncology (PHO) providers are not confident interpreting or utilizing tumor or germline genomic results to care for their patients.

METHODS: We developed and delivered a needs assessment survey to PHO program directors, attendings, and fellows in the United States to understand this deficiency, gather data on existing cancer genomics educational initiatives, and query preferences for creating a future curriculum.

RESULTS: The survey includes 31 (41%) of 74 invited PHO …

Perceived Critical Success Factors For Native American And Non-Native American Pre-Licensure Nursing Students In Northern New Mexico, Karen E. Nielsen

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Considering the consistent healthcare system load demands, nursing shortages persist, especially in remote areas of the United States. It is vital that students interested in attending nursing school and working in their home communities have expanded nursing program access and supports in order to supply the necessary nursing workforce in remote areas. Lack of diversity in the nursing profession weakens healthcare delivery. Native Americans are underrepresented as nursing students and employed nurses. Measures to provide a more diverse workforce should concentrate on recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented minority nursing students. Limited research is available surrounding Native American nursing …

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein (S) plays critical roles in host cell entry. Non-synonymous substitutions affecting S are not uncommon and have become fixed in a number of SARS-CoV-2 lineages. A subset of such mutations enable escape from neutralizing antibodies or are thought to enhance transmission through mechanisms such as increased affinity for the cell entry receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Independent genomic surveillance programs based in New Mexico and Louisiana contemporaneously detected the rapid rise of numerous clade 20G (lineage B.1.2) infections carrying a Q677P substitution in S. The variant was first detected in …

Interactive Effects Of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids And Secondhand Smoke In Mice And Human Subjects, Emily Wheeler, Mary Walsh-Wilcox, Meer Shah, Abinash Achrekar, Joe R. Anderson, Mary K. Walker

Research and Scholarship

Active smoking and secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure increase the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Active smoking is associated with reduced levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) and studies show that n-3 PUFA supplementation can improve smoking-induced vascular dysfunction. However, the relationship between n-3 PUFA and SHS exposure has not been studied. Fat-1 transgenic mice, which convert n-6 to n-3 PUFA, were fed diets with n-3 PUFA or without (n-6 PUFA diet), exposed to air or SHS for 4 weeks, and vasoreactivity, antioxidant indices, and omega-3 index (percent eicosapentaenoic+docosahexaenoic acids in RBC) measured. Compared to air-exposed mice, SHS …

Benefits Derived From Full Laboratory Automation In Microbiology: A Tale Of Four Laboratories, Karissa Culbreath, Heather Piwonka, John Korver, Mir Noorbakhsh

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Automation in clinical microbiology is starting to become more commonplace and reportedly offers several advantages over the manual laboratory. Most studies have reported on the rapid turnaround times for culture results, including times for identification of pathogens and their respective antimicrobial susceptibilities, but few have studied the benefits from a laboratory efficiency point of view. This is the first large, multicenter study in North America to report on the benefits derived from automation measured in full-time equivalents (FTE), FTE reallocation, productivity, cost per specimen, and cost avoidance. Pre- and post-full automation audits were done at 4 laboratories that have vastly …

The transmembrane protein heart of glass1 (HEG1) directly binds to and recruits Krev interaction trapped protein 1 (KRIT1) to endothelial junctions to form the HEG1-KRIT1 protein complex that establishes and maintains junctional integrity. Genetic inactivation or knockdown of endothelial HEG1 or KRIT1 leads to the upregulation of transcription factors Krüppel-like factors 4 and 2 (KLF4 and KLF2), which are implicated in endothelial vascular homeostasis; however, the effect of acute inhibition of the HEG1-KRIT1 interaction remains incompletely understood. Here, we report a high-throughput screening assay and molecular design of a small-molecule HEG1-KRIT1 inhibitor to uncover acute changes in signaling pathways downstream …

A Class That Does (Not) Matter: Rethinking Cold War Latin America From The Middle, A. Ricardo López-Pedreros Dr.

LAII Events

Join the LAII for a presentation with Dr. A. Ricardo López-Pedreros, professor of History at Western Washington University. This presentation seeks to bring together recent interdisciplinary scholarship to initiate a critical conversation on how to rethink the historical formation of the middle classes—as a social category, a political project, a subjectivity, and a material reality—in Latin America during the second half of the twentieth century.

The presentation proceeds in two ways. First, it offers a transnational genealogy of the idea of the middle class in the Americas to explain why, despite scholarly commitment to its study, the middle class appears …

Optimizing The Use Of Telemedicine In Oncology Care: Postpandemic Opportunities, Karen E. Knudsen, Cheryl Willman, Robert Winn Feb 2021

Optimizing The Use Of Telemedicine In Oncology Care: Postpandemic Opportunities, Karen E. Knudsen, Cheryl Willman, Robert Winn

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Utilization of telehealth as part of the cancer care delivery continuum dramatically escalated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic at major cancer centers across the globe. The rapid shift toward telehealth visits for nontreatment cancer care provided immediate benefit through reducing unnecessary risk of exposure, overcoming transportation barriers faced by both patients and caregivers, and fast-tracking care transformation. As such, delineating the impact of telehealth on access, health equity, quality, and outcomes will be essential for refining the use of digital strategies and telehealth toward optimizing cancer care. Herein, experiences to date with telehealth usage for oncology care are reviewed, …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Circular Rna-Mediated Regulation Of Synaptic Gene Expression - Implications For Psychiatric Disorders, Alexander K. Hafez Feb 2021

Molecular Mechanisms Of Circular Rna-Mediated Regulation Of Synaptic Gene Expression - Implications For Psychiatric Disorders, Alexander K. Hafez

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are highly stable non-coding RNAs, derived from the covalent back-splicing of precursor mRNA molecules. Although circRNAs are highly enriched in the brain, the mechanism of action of brain expressed circRNAs and their relevance for psychiatric disorders remains largely unknown. Here we show that circHomer1, a neuronal-enriched circRNA abundantly expressed in the frontal cortex, derived from the Homer protein homolog 1 (HOMER1) gene, is significantly reduced in the prefrontal cortex and induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived neuronal cultures from patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and is associated with the age of onset of schizophrenia. Furthermore, circHomer1 …
