Practice Development Trajectories Of Experienced Nurses: Adaptive Experts, Routine Experts, And Non-Experts, Dee Mulcahy
Practice Development Trajectories Of Experienced Nurses: Adaptive Experts, Routine Experts, And Non-Experts, Dee Mulcahy
Nursing ETDs
This qualitative study examined practice development among experienced, acute care nurses (n = 9) with at least 10 years of experience. Using an interpretive biographical approach, with participants’ written practice narratives and in-depth interviews, the study focused on how the work environment and life experiences influenced or impeded practice development. Participants were classified as routine- or adaptive experts (n = 3 of each type) with one intermediate case and two not readily classifiable. Antecedents to becoming a nurse included family influences, personal interests, altruistic values, and financial need. Experience was necessary but not sufficient for adaptive expertise. Compared …

Effects Of Inclusive Social Skills Training On Preschoolers, Lauren E. Weiss
Effects Of Inclusive Social Skills Training On Preschoolers, Lauren E. Weiss
Special Education ETDs
Social interventions for children with disabilities are generally conducted in small groups and outside of the classroom; therefore, little is known about inclusive and classwide social interventions in early childhood educational settings. This study evaluated the effects of inclusive social skills training (ISST), a program delivered remotely to inclusive preschool classrooms via direct instruction, video modeling, rehearsal, and feedback, to teach social skills. Educators rated preschoolers' social skills in a nonequivalent pretest-posttest design and evaluated the social validity of ISST. I examined the differences in scores. A significant interaction effect was detected in the program group between abilities. Overall, educators …
What Does Social Entrepreneurship Mean To Change Agents In New Mexico? A Phenomenographic Approach To Understanding Social Entrepreneurship, Audriana Stark
What Does Social Entrepreneurship Mean To Change Agents In New Mexico? A Phenomenographic Approach To Understanding Social Entrepreneurship, Audriana Stark
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
Social entrepreneurship has been identified as a solution to some of the world’s most pressing problems, including health, education, and environmental issues. Despite the rise in literature about social entrepreneurship, there is still a lack of understanding how place-based social entrepreneurship is being conceived and experienced by practitioners. Therefore, this study uses a phenomenographic approach to understand what social entrepreneurship means to change agents in New Mexico, a place characterized by social and economic challenges, as well as an abundance of natural and cultural resources. The findings revealed five distinct categories of description for social entrepreneurship including: Category 1. No …

Windblown Transport Of Toxic Metals In Airborne Particulate Matter Near The Jackpile-Paguate Uranium Mine On Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico, Savannah S. Larosa-Lopresti
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Abandoned uranium mines across the U.S. disproportionately affect indigenous communities who suffer numerous intergenerational health consequences from chronic exposure to toxic metal mixtures. The Jackpile-Paguate Uranium Mine on Laguna Pueblo in west-central New Mexico was designated a Superfund Site in 2013 and exposure risks from inhalation of toxic metals in airborne particulate matter are of concern for the local tribal communities. This research aims to examine atmospheric parameters driving windblown transport of respirable particulate matter in the region, to determine concentrations of heavy metals including U, V, Pb, and As due to the link with potential health risks, and to …

Efficacy And Safety Of Low-Dose Versus High-Dose Hydrocortisone To Treat Hypotension In Neonates: A Protocol For A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Katelyn Sushko, Nada Al-Rawahi, Kristi L. Watterberg, John Van Den Anker, Catherine Litalien, Jacques Lacroix, Abdul Razak, Samira Samiee-Zafarghandy
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Impaired adrenal function is a well-described entity in critically ill term and preterm neonates with systemic hypotension. The standard treatment for neonatal hypotension includes volume expanders and vasopressors. Recent evidence supports the use of glucocorticoids for the primary or rescue treatment of neonatal hypotension associated with impaired adrenal function. However, inconsistency regarding the prescribed dosing regimen to provide the best balance between efficacy and safety in this vulnerable population remains an area of concern.
METHODS: We will conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate low-dosing compared with high-dosing regimens of hydrocortisone for the treatment of hypotension in critically …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
During the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, health care practices have shifted to minimize virus transmission, with unprecedented expansion of telehealth. This study describes self-reported changes in registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) practice related to delivery of nutrition care via telehealth shortly after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. This cross-sectional, anonymous online survey was administered from mid-April to mid-May 2020 to RDNs in the United States providing face-to-face nutrition care prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey included 54 questions about practitioner demographics and experience and current practices providing nutrition care via telehealth, including billing …

Subcutaneous Testosterone Is Effective And Safe As Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy In Transmasculine And Gender-Diverse Adolescents And Young Adults: A Single Center's 8-Year Experience, Sarah E. Laurenzano, Ron S. Newfield, Euyhyun Lee, Maja Marinkovic
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
Purpose: To describe our Center's 8-year experience with subcutaneous testosterone (SC-T) as gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) in transmasculine and gender-diverse (TM/GD) youth. Methods: An Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved retrospective study for 119 TM/GD subjects who started SC-T at age 13-19 and received SC-T for >6 months between 2012 and 2020. Results: SC-T was typically started at 25-50 mg biweekly and dose was escalated at provider's discretion. Over 96% of subjects were on 100-320 mg monthly (divided weekly or biweekly) at last follow-up. There was an overall increase in mean total and free testosterone (T) over the dose range (p …

Genomic studies of pediatric cancer have primarily focused on specific tumor types or high-risk disease. Here, we used a three-platform sequencing approach, including whole-genome sequencing (WGS), whole-exome sequencing (WES), and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), to examine tumor and germline genomes from 309 prospectively identified children with newly diagnosed (85%) or relapsed/refractory (15%) cancers, unselected for tumor type. Eighty-six percent of patients harbored diagnostic (53%), prognostic (57%), therapeutically relevant (25%), and/or cancer-predisposing (18%) variants. Inclusion of WGS enabled detection of activating gene fusions and enhancer hijacks (36% and 8% of tumors, respectively), small intragenic deletions (15% of tumors), and mutational signatures revealing …

Failure to follow-up women after abnormal cervical screening could lead to cervical cancers, yet little is known about adherence to recommended follow-up after abnormal co-testing [cytology and high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) testing]. We documented clinical management following cervical screening by co-testing in a diverse population-based setting. A statewide surveillance program for cervical screening, diagnosis, and treatment was used to investigate all cytology, hrHPV and biopsy reports in the state of New Mexico from January 2015 through August 2019. Guideline-adherent follow-up after co-testing required 1) biopsy within 6 months for low-grade cytology if positive for hrHPV, for high-grade cytology irrespective of …

Since vaccination for SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus started, the trajectory of patient numbers infected with the virus has improved once; however, variants of SARS-CoV-2 have emerged and more people have been infected; therefore, pandemic status is still far from resolution. Government and social efforts to prevent coronavirus infection continue in most states in the US and globally even after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared some restriction relief for fully vaccinated people in March 2021. Healthcare institutions and various professional organizations have developed guidelines or policies to prevent the spread of these coronaviruses in the setting of apheresis. In this …

In this population-based US study, the overall prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium was 1.95% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.62%-2.34%), declining from 6.12% (95% CI, 4.72%-7.92%) in women aged 21 to 24 years to 0.48% (95% CI, 0.25%-0.94%) in women aged 40 to 64 years. The prevalence of coinfections with Chlamydia trachomatis and Trichomonas vaginalis was low.
An Exploration Of Unintended Effects Of Education Policies In The United States, Kevin Estes
An Exploration Of Unintended Effects Of Education Policies In The United States, Kevin Estes
Economics ETDs
The work in this dissertation examines unintended consequences from various public policies in education. The first policy examined is the adoption of the four-day school week schedule by public-school districts across the United States. Concerns over the additional weekend night for students are explored by examining teen traffic safety within the school district before and after adoption of the four-day schedule. The second policy examined is the usage of academic probation by universities. Student responses to being placed on academic probation vary, and financial implications for the student are a potential mechanism behind these responses. Student responses segmented by Pell …
