The Rise Of Agenda Diversity In America: Its Cause And Consequences, John K. Wagner
The Rise Of Agenda Diversity In America: Its Cause And Consequences, John K. Wagner
Political Science ETDs
More than ever, Americans disagree on what issues are important. This diversity in the public agenda has received scant attention in recent years. Consequently, our understanding of why agenda diversity developed relies on a single analysis method, and we know next to nothing about the consequences for the American polity. Using a novel approach to measuring agenda diversity and an advanced experimental design, this dissertation demonstrates the causal connection between issue-based selective exposure to news and higher agenda diversity. Concerning its consequences, this work investigates congressional responsiveness. Results from a complex analysis of constituency public opinion, Congress bill sponsorship, and …
Multilevel Optimization With Dropout For Neural Networks, Gary Joseph Saavedra
Multilevel Optimization With Dropout For Neural Networks, Gary Joseph Saavedra
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Large neural networks have become ubiquitous in machine learning. Despite their widespread use, the optimization process for training a neural network remains com-putationally expensive and does not necessarily create networks that generalize well to unseen data. In addition, the difficulty of training increases as the size of the neural network grows. In this thesis, we introduce the novel MGDrop and SMGDrop algorithms which use a multigrid optimization scheme with a dropout coarsening operator to train neural networks. In contrast to other standard neural network training schemes, MGDrop explicitly utilizes information from smaller sub-networks which act as approximations of the full …

Ashbeck, Chelsea Caruso, Jeffrey Duryea, Edward J. Bedrick, Ali Guermazi, C Kent Kwoh
Radiology Research and Scholarship
Effusion-synovitis (ES) is recognized as a component of osteoarthritis, creating a need for rapid methods to assess ES on MRI. We describe the development and reliability of an efficient single-slice semi-automated quantitative approach to measure ES. We used two samples from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI): 50 randomly selected OAI participants with radiographic osteoarthritis (i.e., Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade 2 or 3) and a subset from the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health Osteoarthritis Biomarker study. An experienced musculoskeletal radiologist trained four non-expert readers to use custom semi-automated software to measure ES on a single axial slice and then read scans …

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Pathogenic structural genetic variants, also known as genomic disorders, have been associated with pediatric CKD. This study extends those results across the lifespan, with genomic disorders enriched in both pediatric and adult patients compared with controls. In the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort study, genomic disorders were also associated with lower serum Mg, lower educational performance, and a higher risk of death. A phenome-wide association study confirmed the link between kidney disease and genomic disorders in an unbiased way. Systematic detection of genomic disorders can provide a molecular diagnosis and refine prediction of risk and prognosis.
BACKGROUND: Genomic disorders …

The Midas Touch: Atuahene's "Stategraft" And Unregulated Artificial Intelligence, Sonia Gipson Rankin
Faculty Scholarship
Professor Bernadette Atuahene’s article, A Theory of Stategraft, develops the new theoretical conception of “stategraft.” Professor Atuahene notes that when state agents have engaged in practices of transferring property from persons to the state in violation of the state’s own laws or basic human rights, it sits at the nexus of illegal behavior and revenue-generating activity for the government. Although there are countless instances of “stategraft,” one particularly salient example is when the state uses artificial intelligence to illegally extract resources from people. This Essay will apply stategraft to an algorithm implemented in Michigan that falsely accused recipients of unemployment …

Transferrin receptor (TFRC) is the major mediator for iron entry into a cell. Under excessive iron conditions, TFRC is expected to be reduced to lower iron uptake and toxicity. However, the mechanism whereby TFRC expression is maintained at high levels in iron-enriched cancer cells and the contribution of TFRC to cancer development are enigmatic. Here the work shows TFRC is induced by adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene loss-driven β-catenin activation in colorectal cancer, whereas TFRC-mediated intratumoral iron accumulation potentiates β-catenin signaling by directly enhancing the activity of tankyrase. Disruption of TFRC leads to a reduction of colonic iron levels and …

The abundance of library associations provides many choices to academic librarians about where and how to belong. This exploratory article identifies and compares benefits of library professional organizations through content analysis of the groups' websites. Examination of the benefits described on the websites of 76 organizations indicates that they have a high degree of overlap. Many benefits are also achievable by participating in other external professional activities. While data were collected just prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, thematic analysis of these benefits provides a framework for comparing the value of participation in formal and informal professional communities.

Fluvial packages are the hypothetical groupings of facies that make up the fluvial succession consisting of channel belt sandstones and associated levee, floodplain, and avulsion deposits. This study attempted to describe a single fluvial package laterally using the new technologies of UAV imaging and 3D photogrammetry; however, amalgamation of channel belts and erosion from this amalgamation made long-distance lateral correlation difficult. This analysis of medial deposits in the Nacimiento Formation in the Angel Peak Area, Northwestern New Mexico evaluates the degree of amalgamation of fluvial packages across the study area while identifying facies associated with the hypothetical fluvial package.
