Adapting Research Through Cross-Campus Collaboration - No Need To Reinvent The (Cheese) Wheel, Emily Roberts, Lori Townsend, Alyssa Russo May 2026

Adapting Research Through Cross-Campus Collaboration - No Need To Reinvent The (Cheese) Wheel, Emily Roberts, Lori Townsend, Alyssa Russo

Posters and Presentations

This lightning talk centers on cross-campus partnerships as a catalyst for research translation and innovation. A health sciences librarian collaborated with members of a general academic library research team at the University of New Mexico to adapt an existing qualitative study on students’ online information evaluation for a nursing context. Rather than starting from scratch, the new team intentionally translated methods, instruments, and approaches to fit a new population and disciplinary setting. This session highlights the collaborative process itself: how partners negotiated context-specific changes, documented adaptation decisions, and preserved methodological rigor while meeting new needs. Although the study’s findings are …

Cultivating Open Data Repository Discoverability Through Cultured Collaboration: A Lightning Talk, Robyn Gleasner, Leah A. Everitt, Danielle E. Maurici-Pollock, Laura J. Hall

Posters and Presentations

Background:

Open data repositories are essential for promoting research transparency, reproducibility, and collaboration. However, many researchers struggle to locate relevant repositories due to fragmented information and lack of centralized guidance. This lightning talk will describe how librarians addressed this challenge through teamwork and collaboration by curating a list of open data repositories to assist in providing a pathway for discovery.

This project aims to enhance the discoverability of open data repositories to support instruction, research, clinical practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration as well as promote open science within the university health sciences center community.

Bayesian Designs For Two-Arm Clinical Trials With Time-To-Event Endpoints: Incorporating Historical Data Through Power Priors, Sara Hajraf H. Almutiri May 2026

Bayesian Designs For Two-Arm Clinical Trials With Time-To-Event Endpoints: Incorporating Historical Data Through Power Priors, Sara Hajraf H. Almutiri

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Bayesian methods provide a flexible framework for time-to-event analysis by incorporating prior information. The power prior offers a systematic way to borrow information from historical data. This approach is especially valuable in clinical research, where historical data can enhance inference in early-phase trials with limited sample sizes. This dissertation develops Bayesian approaches for two-arm survival studies using both closed-form and simulation-based methods. The closed-form inference is derived under exponential and Weibull survival models. Under the proportional hazards framework, the posterior is derived through a normal approximation to the log hazard ratio, allowing inference on the treatment effect when the variance …

A Quantum Phase Space Description Of Local Noise In Atomic Ensembles, Andrew Kolmer Forbes May 2026

A Quantum Phase Space Description Of Local Noise In Atomic Ensembles, Andrew Kolmer Forbes

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Nonclassicality in quantum sensors can improve sensitivity, but often increases susceptibility to noise. Thus, modeling physically relevant noise sources and analyzing their effect on quantum metrology are both of importance to the field of quantum sensing. In this dissertation, I demonstrate that local noise sources, which are present in almost all many-spin systems, can be tractably modeled when assuming permutation symmetry of the noise, and we show that many common local noise sources can be mapped to a Fokker-Planck equation on quantum phase space. We apply this description of noise to study quantum sensing using noisy probe states and establish …

Optical Nuclear Spin Detection In Diamond And Varifocal Metasurface Optics, Maxwell D. Aiello May 2026

Optical Nuclear Spin Detection In Diamond And Varifocal Metasurface Optics, Maxwell D. Aiello

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This dissertation presents two experimental investigations at the intersection of quantum sensing and precision optical instrumentation. The primary project demonstrates optically detected nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of 13C nuclear spins in diamond, using state-selective Landau-Zener transitions under microwave frequency sweeping to bidirectionally transfer spin polarization between nitrogen-vacancy (NV) electron spins and remote 13C nuclear spins. This enables optical polarization and readout of large ensembles of polarized nuclear spins at low magnetic fields and room temperature, with spin dephasing times limited by longitudinal relaxation of nearby NV electron spins. The secondary project reports the design, fabrication, and characterization of …

Sexual Violence By Government Security Forces: Leaders, Institutions, And Culture, Margaret Avera May 2026

Sexual Violence By Government Security Forces: Leaders, Institutions, And Culture, Margaret Avera

Political Science ETDs

I assess how the interaction between leader preferences, regime type, and agent personal motives impacts patterns of sexual violence. I ask, “Why do some government security forces perpetrate sexual violence while others do not?” and “How does the interaction between leader motives and institutions impact victimization patterns?” I found that police corruption was correlated with sexual violence by government security forces, but military corruption was not. My findings indicate the importance of moving beyond a conflict scope and distinguishing between different types of state security actors. In addition, I use natural language processing methods to collect disaggregated allegation data to …
