The Role Of Rio Grande Do Sul In Brazilian Politics, 1930-1967., Carlos E. CortéS

Rio Grande do Sul traditionally has been Brazil's third most powerful state and has spawned an impressive number of national political leaders. For more than twenty-three of the thirty-eight years since the 1930 revolution, the Brazilian president has been a Riograndense, including current President Arthur da Costa e Silva. This dissertation focuses on the role of this state in Brazilian politics from the Rio Grande-led 1930 revolution, which terminated the First Republic, through the 1964 revolution. which overturned the national government of Riograndense João Goulart. There is also a short discussion of the impact of the 1964 revolution on Rio …

Differences In Anglo-American Policy On The Strategic Bombardment Of Germany During World War Ii, 1943-1944, Eugene G. Venable

The different strategic bombing policies of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) and the United States Army Air Force (U.S.A.A.F.) toward Germany, 1943-1944, were both basic and important. As a part of the Anglo-American coalition of World War II, these differences persisted in spite of vigorous efforts for their solution. Only when the Anglo-American air forces realized the precariousness of their position in favor of strategic bombardment did they seriously attempt to modify their disagreement over policy. Even this action, however, was taken superficially. The bombing differences were largely confined to target selection. R.A. F. Bomber Command, led by Air Marshal …

The Formation Of The Brazilian Army And Its Political Behavior (1807-1930)., Robert Ames Hayes

This study identifies and evaluates the various factors which have, historically, affected the formation of the Brazilian army, the primary source of political leadership within the Brazilian military class, and its political behavior during the period 1807-1930. These factors include professional preparation and conditions within the army as well as its social position, military-civilian relations, the sources of political ideology evident within the military class, the effect of immigration, and even evidence of the influence of personalities upon the nature of the political activities of Brazilian military leaders, primarily army officers.

Irvin Mcdowell, Storm Center Of Union Command, 1861-1862, Ronald Francis Locher

Irvin McDowell is an important figure of the Civil War era because the role he played made him a storm center within the Union command structure. His career, therefore, is indicative of certain problems encountered by the North which ultimately prolonged the war. Those command problems, which affected overall federal strategy in the early years of the war, largely centered around four areas: unpreparedness, political intrigue, undefined civil/military functions, and cautious generals. Unpreparedness, the bane of the North's military existence during the early stages of the war, was also a hindrance to McDowell for his talents had previously been restricted …
