Dramatis Pupae: The Special Agency Of Puppet Performances, Casey Mráz Jul 2009

Dramatis Pupae: The Special Agency Of Puppet Performances, Casey Mráz

Theatre & Dance ETDs

Puppets have been used in performance by many cultures for thousands of years. Their roles in performance are constantly changing and evolving. Throughout the twentieth century there has been much contention between performance theorists over what defines a puppet. I aim toward a definition that emphasizes the puppet/audience and puppet/puppeteer relationship: Puppet: Any performing object that mechanizes human facial/bodily structures and features through movement and animates emotion. Puppets make us laugh because they are larger than life, playful and tend to employ comic mannerisms. Therefore, performing their sexuality, gender or race and placing them in violent situations magnifies their comic …

The Spread Of Change In French Negation, Angus Grieve-Smith Jul 2009

The Spread Of Change In French Negation, Angus Grieve-Smith

Linguistics ETDs

Many varieties of French have changed over the years from expressing predicate negation (Geurts 1998) with ne alone, to the embracing construction ne ... pas, and then to postverbal pas alone (Jespersen 1917). When the increase in the frequency of ne ... pas over time is plotted on a graph, it takes the S shape of the logistic function (Kroch 1989). Bybee and Thompson (1997) note that "the type frequency of a pattern determines its degree of productivity," but "high frequency forms with alternations resist analogical leveling.' These two observations provide an explanation for the logistic progression observed by Kroch …

From Bomb Zone To Boom Town: Real Estate Trends And Community Based Practice In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Ivis Garcia Zambrana May 2009

From Bomb Zone To Boom Town: Real Estate Trends And Community Based Practice In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Ivis Garcia Zambrana

Latin American Studies ETDs

The departure of the Navy in 2003, paired with extensive media coverage throughout the U.S., resulted in increased demand for real estate in Vieques. Most properties were bought by land speculators and baby-boomers from the U.S. The increase in demand caused prices to skyrocket, quadrupling prices in just four years. Activists, residents and government officials are now concerned that low-to-middle income Viequense families, who account for the majority of the population, are unable to afford property in their own community. The aim of this thesis is to document the real estate market trends in Vieques, demonstrate how rising prices and …

Theatre/Games: The Poetics, Ludology & Narrative In Video Game And Dramatic Structure, Matt Diel Jan 2009

Theatre/Games: The Poetics, Ludology & Narrative In Video Game And Dramatic Structure, Matt Diel

Theatre & Dance ETDs

This paper discusses the potential avenues of relationship between interactive media, particularly video games, and more traditional forms of theatrical production. It looks at the major theoretical paradigms of game structure in comparison to Aristotle's Poetics to find points of overlap between these two seemingly divergent entities, video games and theatre. As a specific point of reference, it also examines how my own artistic work has roots in both these worlds, and how the deepened understanding of their structures might contribute to my own artistic development.

To be sure, there are at least a few problems with the approach of drawing upon the Framers for guidance with respect to the issues of the day. First, the Framers did not reach consensus on all matters. The famous rivalry between the Alexander Hamilton, a staunch nationalist from New York who favored a strong federal banking system and central government, and Jefferson, a republican from Virginia who preferred an agrarian lifestyle and trusted the people to do right by American society, perhaps best illustrates the fact that the Framers themselves were not in lockstep as to the makeup of …

This Article seeks to answer these questions. In this Article, I will argue that the American response to Islamic terrorist factions must move outside the military sphere in which battles are fought between arms and men to a more conceptual contest for hearts and minds, where the ammunition in this abstract war will be fundamental American principles, particularly a constitutional commitment to the rule of law, and where advancements in the war will be based on incrementally increased attraction to America. This approach will speak to one’s will and conscience in an effort to secure a more lasting respite from …
