The adolescent body and the space of performance both employ a dynamic of liminality - constantly changing and shifting, never "complete," never able to be fully defined, understood, or categorized. There is a compulsion we have in naming, categorizing and defining the bodies and emotional life of young people. Where the liminality of performance may be welcomed and viewed as a necessary and desired component of the experience, the liminality of adolescence is deeply troubling. From her birth in 1886 to her death in 1973, the life of German dancer Mary Wigman spanned the Wilhelmine Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the post-war years. She stands as a seminal figure in what has come to be known as the modern dance. Her Ausdruckstanz or dance of expression was fundamental to the development of dance and theater in Germany and beyond. Literature In Motion: Mary Anthony's Use Of Shakespearean And Biblical Themes In Modern Dance, Gwendolyn Lee Jensen

In this thesis, I analyze the life and work of Mary Anthony in my exploration of modern dance with literary influence. I approach Anthonys use of Shakespearean and Biblical themes as dramatic and timeless literary stimuli for portraying morality, mortality, and humanity as important to the American modern dance style established by her predecessors. I discuss how her lifelong interest in theatre led to her use of dramatic literary sources as a way of producing dance with theatrical elements, or what she calls 'total theatre' rather than dance alone; the clear conception inherent in written works, as well as the …

The Path To Personal Salvation: The Hermetic Trope Of Self-Mastery In Shakespeare, Bacon, And Milton, Cassandra Amundson

My dissertation examines Renaissance authors investment in the Hermetic tradition. This tradition is based on the Hellenistic Egyptian philosophical-theological writings ascribed to Hermes Trismegistus, which emerged in parallel with early Christianity, Neoplatonism, and Gnosticism. The Hermetic tradition gained importance in the Renaissance with Marsilio Ficino's translations and soon became an alternative avenue for the exploration in the spiritual conception of the 'self' as divine, a conception previously closed off by medieval orthodox religious and secular traditions. I argue that principal figures in the Renaissance and Restoration—Shakespeare, Bacon, and Milton—were engaged in constructing this Hermetic mode of thinking to illustrate individuals' …

Identidad And Mejicanidad: Dance Transference Through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, And Flamenco Dance, Erica Ocegueda

Identidad and Mejicanidad examines cultural identity and dance through the lens of 'owners,' 'borrowers,' and 'renters'. I examine how non-professional participants of these dance forms are beacons for cultural expression and serve to explore the fringe of the sense of cultural knowing through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, and Flamenco dance. Through these dance forms I interrogate how cultural identity frames questions of authenticity and identity. Ownership of cultural identity and issues of authenticity are a source of ire for many underrepresented groups of people. Maintaining who is 'in control' of a cultural expressions' evolution is a common dispute. The legacy of …

Dance in entertainment film media, cinema dance, is a hot topic in the current arts world, originating from dance in Hollywood films. Cinema dance developed from the Hollywood musicals of the 1930s, where the camera became a partner in the dance, rather than a piece of equipment that captured dance. The largest contributor to the development of the camera as a partner in the dance was Busby Berkeley. This thesis explores dancing bodies in the Dance of Death genre after the 14th century plague, known today as the Black Death. At that time, Western Europe withstood great losses in body count, with one third of the total European population dying, and in the faith and well-being of its civilization (McNeill 168). Even today, the Black Death continues to be a fascinating area of study because of its political, social, religious, and artistic impact. Andalusia, Spain is considered the birthplace of flamenco. The art form not only embodies but represents the complex, multifaceted Andalusian identity. The southern region is a land of contradictions which includes the Gitano/Roma culture. The Spanish Gitano community laid the foundation for what we now call flamenco. The amalgamation of the cultures which existed in Spain informed the genre. These influences are explored with a thorough analysis of the of the Gitano/Roma nation. New ways of creating and presenting the self in the "space" of the Internet are fascinating, but not yet fully understood. Framed in the theoretical literature of Goffman's presentation of the self, and Burke's conception of rhetoric, the study's primary concern is to explain and understand how Facebook users construct identities using narrative fragments on their profiles and the offline effects of these narrative performances. Specifically, this study argues that narratives are a type of rhetorical performance, and that both narratives and identities have symbolic meaning and rhetorical components. Collection curators develop locally defined unique fields to support local requirements. As per the guidelines of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), Simple Dublin Core is the minimum requirement for exposing metadata to aggregators. Oftentimes the level of specificity of unique local fields is not translated well to Dublin Core, which may hinder the interoperability of the item metadata record. This paper researched 21 digital collections that were hosted in CONTENTdm. The 1952 military coup in Egypt constituted the beginning of a new era in Egypts history and pushed forward substantial societal, economic and political changes. These changes represent the fruits of the revolutionary regime's pro-modernization ideology. In their search for modernity, the Egyptian elite invested in cinema as well as other forms of media and tended to follow the models of western countries. Few playwrights in the history of theater have earned a living from their writing. Certainly contemporary playwrights append other theatrical duties to their title to make a living. How, then, will the current crop of MFAs function in today's theater with their newly-minted degrees in dramatic writing? The author suggests that finding suitable role models could help clarify the post-graduate path and, using himself as a model, compares his own work and theatrical history to two working playwrights, Steven Dietz and Emily Mann. Writing The Warrior: A Latina Writes Latinas, Patricia S. Crespin

This paper discusses the relationship between Latina writer and her warrior woman character on the stage. It defines the warrior woman from an extrapolated viewpoint and it reveals the motivations behind the inspiration to create a Latina woman who has many distinct attributes and nuances. It investigates the idea of a silent warrior and a vixen/victim warrior and how she comes to the stage through the mind of the writer and challenges the idea that even writer's who are aware of the stereotypical identities given to Latina women, use these distinctive identities for the sake of drama.
