State-Perpetrated Wartime Sexual Violence In Latin America, Michele Leiby Mar 2012

State-Perpetrated Wartime Sexual Violence In Latin America, Michele Leiby

Political Science ETDs

This dissertation examines the patterns and motives of state-perpetrated wartime sexual violence in Peru and El Salvador. Using a new database on sexual and other forms of political violence, it documents the prevalence and the patterns of perpetration of violence. It seeks to determine whose interests motivate the commission of sexual violence in times of war and why state armed forces commit more sexual violence in some regions and at particular moments during civil war than in others. The dissertation provides a theory of sexual violence perpetrated by state militaries during counterinsurgency conflicts. It argues that sexual violence is a …

Geochemistry Of Cave Pools In The Guadalupe Mountains, Nm : Implications For Geomicrobiology, Kooser Ara Feb 2012

Geochemistry Of Cave Pools In The Guadalupe Mountains, Nm : Implications For Geomicrobiology, Kooser Ara

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The study of the chemistry of waters in cave pools in the Guadalupe Mountains, NM was conducted to determine the variation in cave pool water geochemistry, explain hydrogeologic variations in a geologic context, identify the processes that control cave pool hydrologic variations and determine geochemical controls on modern and paleo-bacterial communities. Structural studies indicate cave pools align along NE and NW structures in the karst system. The intersection of Permian structures and Cenozoic related structures provide pathways for infiltrating water. Water samples were collected from 19 new cave pools; the results were integrated with published geochemistry from 192 cave pools, …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Legal Recourse: Interpreting And Revising Title Vii To Prohibit Workplace Segregation Premised On Religion, Dawinder S. Sidhu Jan 2012

Out Of Sight, Out Of Legal Recourse: Interpreting And Revising Title Vii To Prohibit Workplace Segregation Premised On Religion, Dawinder S. Sidhu

Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this article is to argue that the federal courts’ prevailing interpretation of Title VII with respect to religious attire in the workplace is inconsistent with the law. I maintain that Title VII prohibits employers from either placing employees in the back or refusing to hire individuals with conspicuous articles of faith due to any actual or perceived social discomfort with the employee’s religion-based appearance. I am persuaded of this for two independent reasons. First, placing an employee out of public view does not constitute a “reasonable accommodation” under Title VII because the statute’s general anti-discrimination provision expressly …

The Bowl Championship Series, Conference Realignment And The Major College Football Oligopoly: Revolution Not Reform, Alfred Dennis Mathewson Jan 2012

The Bowl Championship Series, Conference Realignment And The Major College Football Oligopoly: Revolution Not Reform, Alfred Dennis Mathewson

Faculty Scholarship

The legality of the Bowl Championship Series under the federal antitrust laws has been the subject of much scholarly commentary and Congressional inquiry. The results have been mixed but the majority view seems to be that the BCS passes muster under the Sherman Act. Most of the commentary has examined the application of Section 1 with only passing attention to Section 2. This article makes three points. First, it argues that the focus on the BCS has obscured the attention to a broader set of economic issues relating to the structure of the major college football industry. The Bowl Championship …

Gendered Crimes, Gendered Fans: Intersections Of Gender, Sexuality, And Fandom In The Contemporary American Crime Drama, Melanie A. Cattrell Aug 2011

Gendered Crimes, Gendered Fans: Intersections Of Gender, Sexuality, And Fandom In The Contemporary American Crime Drama, Melanie A. Cattrell

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation analyzes the changing representations of gender and sexuality in American network crime dramas over the last thirty years. It also examines the growing Internet fan communities that have developed to discuss these shows. Specifically, it provides a feminist and queer textual analysis of a variety of television crime dramas, comparing 1980's crime dramas such as Cagney & Lacey and Hunter to contemporary programs Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Bones. This textual analysis is followed with an analysis of the contemporary shows' surrounding fan communities. Thus, this work charts the relationship between television studies, audience studies, fan …

La Danse Du Tutuguri Ou Le Rite Du Soleil Noir : Une Performance Textuelle D'Antonin Artaud., Anne-Sabine Nicolas Jul 2011

La Danse Du Tutuguri Ou Le Rite Du Soleil Noir : Une Performance Textuelle D'Antonin Artaud., Anne-Sabine Nicolas

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Antonin Artaud, author of the famous "The Theatre and Its Double" and the concept of Theatre of Cruelty, arrived in Mexico in 1936 with the intent of revising the paradigm of Western theatre by emphasizing its strong connection with life forces. Artaud considered theatre to be a spiritual and healing practice for both the performer and the audience while creating a shift in consciousness. His journey took him to the land of the Tarahumara Indians in the Sierra Madre, where he participated in the annual sacred Peyotl ceremony conducted by powerful shamans. Artaud's ethno-poetic account of their cosmology confirmed his …

Domestic Violence And Empire: Legacies Of Conquest In Mexican American Writing, Leigh Johnson Jul 2011

Domestic Violence And Empire: Legacies Of Conquest In Mexican American Writing, Leigh Johnson

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation posits that writers can symbolically represent domestic violence to critique unjust gender relations as well as iniquitous US policy toward Mexican Americans. I use the term domestic violence because it most closely describes the double voiced discourse women engage to critique communities that condone violence against women as well as a country that perpetrates violence against Mexican Americans within its borders. Put broadly, domestic violence refers to threats of sexual, emotional, or psychological abuse within the home. Furthermore, patriarchal control over womens agency, sexuality, and mobility in turn-of-the-century texts also indicates domestic violence through social and historical conditions. …

Understanding The Confluence Of Online Islamism And Counterpublicity: An Ideological Study Of The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's Rhetoric In Ikhwanweb, Soumia Dhar Jul 2011

Understanding The Confluence Of Online Islamism And Counterpublicity: An Ideological Study Of The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's Rhetoric In Ikhwanweb, Soumia Dhar

Communication ETDs

My dissertation addresses two fundamental problems confronting most Islamist organizations: (a) their monolithic treatment by Western advocates of secular and democratic change, who by default associate Islamism with extremism; and (b) their struggle to function as unencumbered civil society actors and legitimate political entities in authoritarian political societies. In that endeavor, I carry out an ideological analysis of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's (MB) English-language rhetoric in its website, Ikhwanweb: (a) to interpret the worldview manifest in its cyber rhetoric, and identify the rhetorical strategies that support this worldview; and b) to examine Ikhwanweb's potential as a tool for counterpublic expression …

Borders, Bridges, And Beer: Performances Of Cultural Identities In The Washington Birthday Celebration, Diana Carolina Ramos Jul 2011

Borders, Bridges, And Beer: Performances Of Cultural Identities In The Washington Birthday Celebration, Diana Carolina Ramos

Communication ETDs

In this study I describe how individuals living in Laredo, Texas, a city situated in the U.S.-Mexico border region, make sense of their identities through their experiences in the Washington Birthday Celebration (WBC). By focusing on communication as means for creating cultural identities, this study provides insight into how communication is used in the construction and performance of cultural identities. Specifically, I focus on The Society of Martha Washington, one of the several affiliate organizations that participates in the WBC, in order to answer the following research questions about the enactment of cultural identities in the WBC: (1) What cultural …

Indigenous Remapping In The Southern Californian Landscape, Elysia Poon Jul 2011

Indigenous Remapping In The Southern Californian Landscape, Elysia Poon

Art & Art History ETDs

The history of Native people in Southern California is both unique in that, until the last few decades, many people within the state were completely unaware of the presence of living Native Californians. With the onset of the gaming industry in the late 1980s, however, the visibility of Native California skyrocketed. Beginning in the 1990s, homes and streets were filled with gaming ads, political campaigns touting the benefits of gaming and at times, entire tribal councils were making their presence known at public events. Additionally, the fight for many unrecognized tribes in California in conjunction with the rise in economic …
