This article uses Critical Race Theory and LatCrit methodologies, vocabulary, categories, and pedagogical approaches. In this Section, titled 'On Mascaras,' I am grappling with race (and gender secondarily) in public space -- un/masking my professional persona. In using the word 'wrestle' in the subheading I am referring to this struggle over a re-allocation of the social power that inheres in racial hierarchies, namely, the back-and-forth exchanges involved in changing the racial ambiance by exposing and transforming the presumptions, especially regarding notions of inferiority, that cabin our thinking and restrain our relationships. It is our strong belief that economic and community development go hand in hand, and that there cannot be success in one without equal accomplishment in the other. Our project area, as seen on the next page, reflects this belief. It includes not only the entire strip of East Second Street between Main and Atkinson, but Garden Avenue and the residential neighborhoods to the north and south as well. The class was divided into five groups, each responsible for recommending designs for a prescribed geographic area.

This year (2012), the Studio returned to two previous DPAC communities--Doña Ana Village and downtown Las Cruces. Addressing these communities concurrently this time presented the opportunity to consider how they are connected and the context they share. In cooperation with the New Mexico Mainstreet Program and local community organizations, DPAC students held conversations with local stakeholders, studied the communities and their larger context (in person and through secondary sources) to identify assets and challenges, and uncover strategies that build upon the region's history and existing strengths, preserve and restore valuable ecologies, make the most of scarce resources (water), and make …

The purpose of this study was to generate a set of strategies for potential urban improvements in the South Carlisle neighborhood (herein referred to as the Carlisle Village neighborhood). In conjunction with MainStreet USA, The University of New Mexico Design Planning and Assistance Center (DPAC) focused its collective and individual design efforts on Raton's historic main streets for the spring 2007 semester. Key among the studio's design objectives were attracting visitors off of Interstate 25 and State Highway 64, promoting walkability and vitality within the downtown core, connecting the east and west side of the railroad tracks, and highlighting the recreational opportunities that abound in the area.

Often placed at the center of psychotherapeutic training rhetoric are the notions of cultural sophistication, competency, and responsiveness; however, these notions are often pushed to the margins of practice. This qualitative and interdisciplinary community project explores an important strand of psychosocial development that has always already existed, but had yet to be named. Psychosocial consciousness develops, through time, as a natural human response to our day-to-day experiences and encounters. These experiences and encounters form, reinforce, and perpetuate systems of understanding of self and others which profoundly impact our experience in the world. the Armendáriz family was important in New Mexico during the early

to mid-1800s, with key political, diplomatic, and social links to Texas; California;

Washington, D.C.; and Mexico. The lives of the Armendárizes attest

to the long and constant movement of people, trade, and politics along El

Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (the Royal Road of the Interior) and to the

During the spring of 2013 Design Planning Assistance Center (DPAC) of the University of New Mexico's School of Architecture and Planning worked with New Mexico MainStreet to assist Clovis and Tucumcari MainStreet communities and Arts and Cultural District (ACD) initiatives. The work focused on the three historic theaters in Clovis and two in Tucumcari as part of a larger initiative on New Mexico's historic theaters. The studio proposed renovations, adaptive reuses, and additions to the theaters, and proposed both permanent and temporary facilities to create art and cultural theater districts. Toe-tap is an extreme form of tap dancing. As related to both American ballet and tap dance history, this style has been widely forgotten. Noisy Feet: The Forgotten Click of American Toe-Tap, 1925-1935' is the beginning of an effort to include toe-tap in dance history, acknowledging toe-tap's questionable relationship to ballet. The work investigates the state of American ballet before the arrival of the Ballets Russes and explores innovations of pointe, tap, and toe-tap shoes by theatrical shoe makers. Harvesting pain to create difficult female characters that serve as the emotional catalysts for the plot is explored in my plays, Caballos Muertos and Señora de la Pinta. I discuss why I have chosen to reclaim the word "bitch" to describe angry Chicanas that have been a thematic necessity in my writing because of internal violence resulting from the colonization of the female body. In flamenco there exists a conversation revolving around ideas of authenticity and purity. This dialogue advances a claim that there is true' flamenco. From this discussion I extract for my research the idea of truth in flamenco, as opposed to true flamenco. This idea of truth moves away from the traditional purity dialogue. Stemming away from the insistence upon a single ideal of correctness, this pursuit focuses instead on searching for genuine comprehension in the art, this comprehension affords clarity and truth. What is the relationship between music and dance? Specifically, when choreographers interpret music with movement, what in the music are they responding to? When faced with ambiguities in the music, such as conflicting meters, how do choreographers choose which paths to pursue? With the aim of addressing these questions, fourteen professional choreographers from Europe, Brazil, and the United States were recruited to participate in a survey. This included a) general questions about how they use music when choreographing, and b) specific questions concerning four short musical tracks taken from the second movement of Maurice Ravels String Quartet in F Major. …

A more holistic view of the Puritans in seventeenth-century Massachusetts can be reached by looking at their complex relationship with leisure and its manifestation both in their dance practice and attitudes towards dance. This thesis takes a multi-disciplinary approach in bringing to light this understanding, consisting of research into a variety of fields including music, English history, Colonial American history, social dance studies, and theology. Chapter I lays out the theological and historical heritage of the Non-separatist Puritans who sailed to Massachusetts with John Winthrop in 1630. Monkmans acrylic painting The Triumph of Mischief is the central subject of this investigation which includes its relationship to other paintings and objects in the installation The Triumph of Mischief. By applying Mieke Bal's narratology theory, the principles of carnivals as proposed by Mikhail Bahktin, the four dichotomies underlying Western movies, Monkman's appropriation of older art work, his use of various binary opposites and his inclusion of iconographic details from various art history epochs are explained. Frames Behind The Throne: Contextualizing The Calotype Albums Of Prince Albert 1850-1859, Sherri Sorensen-Clem

This thesis examines four extant calotype albums from the collection of Prince Albert and, contains approximately 383 images ranging in date from 1850-1859. I propose that the photographs in these albums, which belong to Queen Victoria’s husband, operate as fragments of the visual world and form a pictorial autobiography of the Prince Consort, offering frames behind the throne. It is my contention that Prince Albert uses the mimetic faculty of the photograph and its placement within the album to become an object of narrative, autobiography, and identity.
