Shifting Dreams: Intersections Of The Rhetorical Imagination Of U.S. Immigration Policy And The Writing Practices Of Dreamers, Genevieve Garcia De Mueller
Shifting Dreams: Intersections Of The Rhetorical Imagination Of U.S. Immigration Policy And The Writing Practices Of Dreamers, Genevieve Garcia De Mueller
English Language and Literature ETDs
This dissertation examines the intersections between the rhetoric of the DREAM Act and the discourse of the migrant activists, specifically DREAMers, affected by the Acts language. Through a hermeneutic approach combining a rhetorical, genre, and critical discourse analysis, I examine how the DREAMers respond to marginalizing textual features of the Act. DREAMers appropriate genres and rhetorical moves of the dominant discourse to combat four problem features of the DREAM Act, namely the criminalizing nature, the erasure of the affected subjects (migrants), the taking away of agency from the affected subjects (migrants), and the propagation of xenophobic racism. Often fraught with …

Federal Restrictions On Tribal Customary Law: The Importance Of Tribal Customary Law In Tribal Courts, Concetta R. Tsosie De Haro, Dine Nation
Tribal Law Journal
This article examines the adverse effects of federal case law and legislation on tribal courts and tribal courts’ ability to incorporate tribal customary law. Tribal customary law is the law given to tribes by holy deities which governs tribal ways of life. It is important to maintain tribal customary law because it strengthens tribal communities’ identities and cultural foundations. While Supreme Court precedent has, at different times, both restricted and promoted tribes’ ability to use tribal customary law to adjudicate the cases of tribal members, federal legislation including the Major Crimes Act, the Indian Civil Rights Act, the Tribal Law …

In The Open Air: Rediscovering Self And The Environment Through Site-Specific Dance And Alternative Teaching Methods, Lisa Marie Nevada
In The Open Air: Rediscovering Self And The Environment Through Site-Specific Dance And Alternative Teaching Methods, Lisa Marie Nevada
Theatre & Dance ETDs
In the Open Air: Rediscovering Self and the Environment through Site-Specific Dance and Alternative Teaching Methods examines the accessibility of modern and contemporary dance today. It reflects on personal research, teaching values and the human/nature interface as motives for bringing dance out of the theatre and into nontraditional environments. I examine methodologies for creating and teaching dance in nature and nontraditional settings. To support this research I have studied Anna Halprin and her approach of taking dance outdoors as a way of promoting community and self-discovery. I also review why Halprins work matters to me. I share my inspirations and …
Reconsidering Fibich’S Šárka: Myth, Gender, And The Construction Of A Nation, Barbora Gregusova
Reconsidering Fibich’S Šárka: Myth, Gender, And The Construction Of A Nation, Barbora Gregusova
Music ETDs
This work reassesses the standard consensus of Zdeněk Fibich’s (1850-1900) compositional aesthetic in his most popular opera Šárka (1896). Through the use of an interdisciplinary analysis, I set out a new interpretation. I evaluate the location of the composer’s output on the nationalistic-cosmopolitan continuum through comparisons with Smetana’s and Wagner’s compositional tendencies, respectively. I correlate Fibich’s place in the Czech political and social situations as well as conceptions of folk music with the role and depiction of gender. A feminist reading of the opera in light of Fibich’s musical treatment deemphasizes the composer’s cosmopolitan side and, contrary to the popular …
Posh And Tawdry: Rethinking E.J. Bellocqs' Storyville Portraits, Christian Waguespack
Posh And Tawdry: Rethinking E.J. Bellocqs' Storyville Portraits, Christian Waguespack
Art & Art History ETDs
In this thesis I examine the contextual framework in which New Orleans photographer E.J. Bellocqs Storyville Portraits have been placed, and resituate Bellcoq's oeuvre in a vernacular context. Bellocq was a commercial photographer working in the nineteen-teens who photographed the prostitutes of New Orleans red light district, Storyville. After his death, Lee Friedlander purchased these now damaged negatives and reprinted the full plates, and in 1970 MOMA exhibited Friedlander's new prints in a formulaic, modernist fashion. The Storyville Portrait's recontexualization by MOMA, converted them from commercial erotic advertisements for prostitution in Storyville to fine art photographs, raises issues of how …

Ecotone Conditions Along Pinon-Juniper And Ponderosa Pine Elevational Ranges, Jemez Mountains, Nm, Christopher Lawrence Sanderson
Architecture and Planning ETDs
While climate variability is endemic to Southwest North America (SWNA), mounting evidence indicates the region is undergoing significant warming and becoming increasingly arid. Species are at or near their physiological limits at ecotone boundaries and are therefore particularly sensitive to climate change. Drought and warming associated tree mortality has been particularly acute in the semiarid forests and woodlands of the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, USA, where ponderosa pine forests (Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum) and piñon--juniper woodlands (Pinus edulis and Juniperus monosperma) have been subject to cambium-feeding pine beetle (Dendroctonus spp., Ips spp) attacks and increased wildfire activity and severity. Grazing …

Mutalismo: A Community Based Approach Preservation Of The Pueblo De Abiquiu, James M. Aranda, Moises Gonzales, Jose Rivera
Resource Center for Raza Planning (RCRP)
The Merced del Pueblo de Abiquiu is one of New Mexico’s historic genizaro land grant settlements. “Genizaro was the designation given to North American Indians of mixed tribal derivation living among the Hispanic population” (Gonzales 2014). The “historical connection to the Hopi Genizaro Pueblo Indians of Tewa descent” (Gonzales 2014) is what gives Abiquiu its Pueblo designation. The original settlers were Tewa peoples who settled the area during the early 1600s, followed by the Hopi who left Arizona and settled in the Merced del Pueblo de Abiquiu. “From the 1740s to the 1790s, towns such as Abiquiu were established as …
Re-Contextualizing The Patriarch: Understanding Fathers And Sons, Kevin J. Hathaway
Re-Contextualizing The Patriarch: Understanding Fathers And Sons, Kevin J. Hathaway
Theatre & Dance ETDs
This essay will explore the spiritual leadership role of the patriarch with regards to my upbringing in River Road Fellowship, a non-denominational cult of roughly ninety people located in central Minnesota. It will also examine the affect the cult's leader, Victor Barnard, had on me as a spiritual father figure and the impact his ideology has on my approach to dramatic writing. I will analyze my play Ashes Crossing Yellow Lines, a story of two diametrically opposed brothers who find redemption by confronting their past and the memory of their father; a religious cult leader who tore apart his family …

Listen, Then Speak: Foregrounding Womens Spaces, Stories, And Relationships In Dramatic Writing, Irene Loy
Theatre & Dance ETDs
In this essay, I provide documentation for my theory and practice during this MFA degree. I begin with a short personal essay on my auto-biography leading up to and including this program. Then I follow with an overview of the theoretical underpinnings to my writing practice. Of particular importance here is the framing of listening and spaciousness as feminine and of speaking and activity as masculine, as a means of underscoring the inherent value of that which has traditionally been undervalued in the history of dramatic literature. This characterizes a move toward women's bodies, rather than away from them, including …

In the academic world, research is primarily seen through the scientific approach of collecting and interpreting scientific or numeric data, or the humanistic approach of comparing and interpreting texts. However, in the performing arts fields, academics see themselves on a spectrum between scholar and artist. Artistic scholarly research activities are often driven by the same requirements as humanities research. However, as artists, research often takes the form of listening to or watching performances. In this approach, performances and recordings are research data to these academics. How can libraries support this method of research? What are the implications for data curation …

Creating Theatre: The Search For A Voice, Barney Lopez
Theatre & Dance ETDs
This essay will explore questions related to the political theatre, the use of irony and satire and Augusto Boal's "Invisible Theater". I will analyze my plays, The House That Ché Built, Carson Lake, and Simon as Sergio. I will discuss my experimentation with politic theatre, my dive into the family politics of Greek tragedy, and I will investigate the dual identities we are navigating while social networking becomes increasingly integrated into our lives. Throughout this essay, I will discuss how my playwriting has developed and how I have begun to find my voice as a playwright. I hope that this …
Choreographer As Coach: Facilitating Engagement During The Dance Making Process, Emily D. Bryan
Choreographer As Coach: Facilitating Engagement During The Dance Making Process, Emily D. Bryan
Theatre & Dance ETDs
Dance is formed from the interactions between the choreographer and the dancers that occur during the workshop and rehearsal phase of the dance making process. The choreographer's art is brought to life not solely through the creation of the choreography, but through the interpretation of the choreography in the bodies of the dancers. Thus, the time spent coaching dancers is an important piece of the choreographer's work. Artists have written about the value of dancers in their work, and educators provide theories about training dancers in the classroom, but little has been written about practical methods for the professional choreographer …
Fascism, Flamenco, And Ballet Español: Nacionalflamenquismo, Theresa Goldbach
Fascism, Flamenco, And Ballet Español: Nacionalflamenquismo, Theresa Goldbach
Theatre & Dance ETDs
The nationalist regime of General Francisco Franco (1936-1975) dramatically and forcefully reshaped every element of Spanish culture including dance and flamenco. Many flamencologists derisively refer to the resulting product of this system as nacionalflamenquismo or national-flamencoism. The bureaucratic mechanics that created nacionalflamenquismo evolved throughout the first three decades of the regime to fit with changing economic and political realities. As Spain re-entered the global community following its Civil War (1936-1939), flamenco and Spanish dance proved useful tools for international public relations as well as domestic propaganda. By discerning the various factors that linked the art of flamenco to the political …
