Comparative Enzymology Of Glyoxalase I, Christina Margaret Schimandle
Comparative Enzymology Of Glyoxalase I, Christina Margaret Schimandle
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The role of the metal ion in rat erythrocyte glyoxalase I was evaluated. The apoenzyme was formed by dialysis against an EDTA-imidazole buffer. Fluorescence studies of the Mg++- and Mn++-dansylated glyoxalase I's suggest that the metal ion is near the active site of the enzyme and participates in the catalytic reaction. Stereochemical studies of the conversion of methylglyoxal to S-lactoylglutathione with Mg++, Mn++, Co++ and Ni++-glyoxalase I's show that the 0-lactate of S-lactoylglutathione (97±1.5%) is formed. This result suggests that the reaction mechanism is the same with a change …

Evolution Of Eusocial Behavior: Offspring Choice Or Parental Parasitism?, Eric Charnov
Evolution Of Eusocial Behavior: Offspring Choice Or Parental Parasitism?, Eric Charnov
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Assuming the subsocial route towards eusociality, I show that selection favors worker habits (under haplodiploidy) provided the mutant workers are able to bias the sex ratio towards sisters and/or selectively substitute their sons for brothers. If the original workers are not able to do this, selection does not favor the habit. However, under these conditions, selection is indifferent as to whether an individual rears offspring or sibs. This makes it easy for a mother to enlist her daughters services in rearing other offspring, since the daughter cannot evolve to stop the parental parasitism. These results deal with the origin of …

A Study Of A Buoyancy Balanced Gas-Liquid Contacting System, Jaw-Ruey Leu
A Study Of A Buoyancy Balanced Gas-Liquid Contacting System, Jaw-Ruey Leu
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
In a conventional gas-liquid contacting system that provides a long gas-liquid contact time, a pressurized gas is released at the bottom of a pool of liquid to form gas bubbles; the bubbles move upward through the liquid and break at the surface of the liquid. A large amount of work is spent in pressurizing the gas. Even though it is theoretically possible to recover work from rising bubbles, a work recovery scheme has not been incorporated into a conventional system.
A buoyancy-balanced gas-liquid contacting system concept has recently been introduced. The system comprises two processing zones filled with a liquid, …
Ecological Comparison Of Sigmodon Hispidus And Sigmodon Fulviventer In The Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico, Karen Petersen
Ecological Comparison Of Sigmodon Hispidus And Sigmodon Fulviventer In The Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico, Karen Petersen
Biology ETDs
This study evaluates the potential for competitive interactions between two species of cotton rat along the Rio Grande valley in New Mexico. Field work was carried out on Sigmodon hispidus and S. fulviventer from April, 1976 to August, 1976, at six study sites. Field data gathered included number of juveniles, number of pregnant females and vegetation diversity. Further studies included morphological analysis of museum specimens and a behavioral study of animals brought back to the laboratory.
Population parameters were compared across the study sites for the cotton rats. Neither species has a sex ratio significantly different from 50:50, but the …
Factors Affecting Mating Duration In The Walkingstick Diapheromera Velii (Walsh) (Phasmatodea: Heteronemiidae), John M. Sivinski
Factors Affecting Mating Duration In The Walkingstick Diapheromera Velii (Walsh) (Phasmatodea: Heteronemiidae), John M. Sivinski
Biology ETDs
Mating durations have only recently become the object of detailed research. The stick insect Diapheromera velii mates from 3 to 136 hours, during which time the genitalia are often not inserted, and contact is maintained by a male clasping organ. Prolonged attachment of male D. velii in the absence of copulation is best explained as guarding that assures the efficiency of previously transferred ejaculates by avoiding sperm competition. Oviposition patterns in D. velii are relatively continuous when compared to those of many insects. The result is that female value to males is comparatively constant as well. The amount of time …
The Effects Of Salts And Metals On Germination And Emergence Of Atriplex Canescens (Pursh.) Nutt. And Sporobolus Airoides Torr, Robert L. Edgar
The Effects Of Salts And Metals On Germination And Emergence Of Atriplex Canescens (Pursh.) Nutt. And Sporobolus Airoides Torr, Robert L. Edgar
Biology ETDs
Laboratory studies were conducted to determine effects of salts, metals, and their interactions on the germination and emergence of fourwing saltbush [Atriplex canescens (Pursh.) Nutt.] and alkali sacaton (Sporobolus airoides Torr.). These studies, coupled with soil evaluations, should allow one to predict and possibly alleviate germination and emergence inhibition of these two species due to excessive soil salts and metals. Fourwing saltbush germination and emergence is significantly greater with osmotic stress < -3 bars imposed by inorganic salts (NaCl, Na2SO4, MgCl2, MgSO4, or CaCl2) than by polyethylene glycol (PEG) (P < .05). Alkali sacaton germination and emergence is significantly better with osmotic stress < -3 bars imposed by NaCl, Na2SO4, or CaCl2 than by …
Synthesis And Studies Of A Carbon-13 Labelled Chemical Carcinogen, Robert E. Royer
Synthesis And Studies Of A Carbon-13 Labelled Chemical Carcinogen, Robert E. Royer
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Derivatives of 6-methylbenzo[a]pyrene enriched to 90% carbon-13 at the methyl carbon were synthesized. Reactions of the carcinogen, 6-chloromethylbenzo[a]pyrene, with nucleophiles under solvolytic conditions were studied kinetically and, using labelled 6-chloromethylbenzo[a]pyrene, the reaction products were studied by CMR. The purpose was to characterize the selectivity of the benzo[a]pyrenyl- 6-methyl carbonium ion in its reactions with some simple nucleophiles and with nucleosides and other nucleic acid components.
Although the solvolysis of 6-chloromethylbenzo[a]pyrene in aqueous/organic solution is first order, information about the course of the reaction can be obtained, under certain circumstances, from rate constants. Thus, if the rate of solvolysis is slowed …
Physical Studies Of Hg(Ii) And Ag(I) Dna Complexes, Dawen Ding
Physical Studies Of Hg(Ii) And Ag(I) Dna Complexes, Dawen Ding
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The binding of Hg(II) and Ag(I) to the bases of DNA and polynucleotides induces strong absorption and CD bands. From electric dichroism studies, the transition moment of the difference absorption band at 293 nm is in the plane of the bases and has a huge negative CD band at 285 nm; while the corresponding 293 nm difference absorption band of DNA-Ag(I) complex is relatively CD inactive. A second band at 270 nm in the difference absorption spectrum of the DNA-Ag(I) complex has a large associated CD band at 270 nm. This transition is out of the plane of the bases. …
Photochemical Studies Of Hydroxo-Bridged Complexes Of Chromium (Iii), Ronald Raymond Ruminski
Photochemical Studies Of Hydroxo-Bridged Complexes Of Chromium (Iii), Ronald Raymond Ruminski
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The acid solution and solid state photolysis in both visible and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum for µ-hydroxo-bis[pentaamminechromium(III)] chloride, and the solution photolysis in the visible and 1 traviolet region of the spectrum for µ-hydroxo-bis[pentaarnrninechr rnium(III)] perchlorate, have been studied. The ultraviolet irradiation of µ-hydroxo-bis[pentaamminechromium(III)] chloride in HCl and CHlO4 produces a redox photoproduct identified as HCrO4-, although the rate of production of HCrO4- in HClO4 is slower than in HCl. Photochemical cleavage of the hydroxo-bridge occurs in the ultraviolet photolysis of µ -hydroxo-bis[pentaanuninechromium(III)] chloride and is 1.9 times faster than the corresponding …

The Effects Of Various Pyrolysis Conditions On The Release Of Products From Green River Oil Shale, Georgia Thomas Fritz
The Effects Of Various Pyrolysis Conditions On The Release Of Products From Green River Oil Shale, Georgia Thomas Fritz
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The fusion of oil shales with eutectic mixtures of inorganic salts was studied with the objective of finding a chemical means of releasing the organic material either at a lower temperature or with a lower empirical activation energy (Ea). Experimental techniques by which the pyrolysis of oil shale was studied were thermogravimetry (TG), evolved gas detection (EGD), and pyrolysis/thin-layer chromatography (TLC). The following fused salts were investigated (ratios in mo1%): LiCO3/Na2co3/K2CO3, 43.5/31.5/25.0; KSCN/NaSCN, 73.75/26.25; KSCN/NaSCN, 70/30; Na2SO4/K2SO4/ZnSO4, 29.1/30.2/40.7; NaCl/Na2CO3 …
