Conceptual Meaning In Phonology: Multimodal Iconic Expressions In Discourse Focus, David Páez Acevedo Nov 2023

Conceptual Meaning In Phonology: Multimodal Iconic Expressions In Discourse Focus, David Páez Acevedo

Linguistics ETDs

In everyday communication, speakers go beyond words to synchronize speech sounds and gestures, adding nuanced meanings. For instance, in Colombian Spanish, recounting the distant past involves elongating words, modulating pitch, and using expressive hand movements. This dissertation explores this phenomenon, termed Multimodal Iconic Expressions (MMIEs), using Cognitive Linguistics and Cognitive Grammar. The quantitative study uncovers correlations between verb aspect, nominal quantification, and speech duration, revealing phono-iconic connections. The qualitative study examines construal operations giving rise to MMIEs across semantic domains. MMIEs predominantly appear in discourse Focus, with durative events and mass-like quantities exhibiting pronounced phono-iconic associations. Patterns include stress and …

Phenological Activities Of Desert Bees Track Rainfall More Than Temperature And Predict Temporal Abundance Trends Over 16 Years, Jade Elijah Mclaughlin Nov 2023

Phenological Activities Of Desert Bees Track Rainfall More Than Temperature And Predict Temporal Abundance Trends Over 16 Years, Jade Elijah Mclaughlin

Biology ETDs

Phenology, the timing of recurrent biological events, is a key mechanism by which species adapt or acclimatize to variable environmental conditions, including those influenced by climate change. Measurable traits, including the onset and end of activity, peak activity, and duration, characterize the phenology of life events, and could be significant predictors of trends in population abundance or stability in a changing climate. Bees provide critical pollination services, and understanding the covariates of bee phenological traits can refine predictions on the vulnerabilities of bees and their services to climate change. We paired 16 years of monthly bee survey data (2002-2019) with …

An Exploration Of Tissue Specific Impedance Using Microneedle Based Wearable Sensors, Kaitlyn J.H. Read Nov 2023

An Exploration Of Tissue Specific Impedance Using Microneedle Based Wearable Sensors, Kaitlyn J.H. Read

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Within this research, I have developed a microneedle-based wearable sensor for plants and fungi, to measure the electrical impedance of different tissues. Electrical impedance measures the physical properties of a material while allowing complex biological systems to be modeled onto a simplified electrical circuit. Microneedles allow for electrical impedance to measure specific tissues without the insulative properties of the cuticle and can be applied to delicate tissues. I have demonstrated the tissue specificity, novel attachment methods, as well as use on both plants and fungi. In chapter 1, I applied microneedle-based impedance to the leaf midrib of a sorghum and …

Mimicking Biofilms: Photosynthetic Assessments Of C. Reinhardtii In 3 Physical Forms, John Michael Roesgen Nov 2023

Mimicking Biofilms: Photosynthetic Assessments Of C. Reinhardtii In 3 Physical Forms, John Michael Roesgen

Biology ETDs

Oxygenic photosynthesis supports the majority of life on Earth through the capture of energy from sunlight and the assimilation of CO2 into basic building blocks of cells. Microalgae are fast growing and account for about half of global photosynthesis. In addition, they can be cultivated and their metabolism can be redirected to generate additional useful products ranging from biofuels to pharmaceuticals. However, the efficiency of metabolite production is severely impacted by the slow diffusion of CO2 through water and the high energetic costs of harvesting microalgae from liquid cultures. Microalgae grow in open water, but they also form …

Effects Of Aging On Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption: A Preliminary Study, Steven Klepacz

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Aging and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) is something that has not been adequately studied. Studies looking at EPOC mostly are compiled of young college age individuals. Aging in humans is a topic of much research with still more to be learned. The study in this paper attempts to answer the question of whether age affects EPOC when performing a certain exercise. Preliminary findings based on general age-related research suggest the possibility. This thesis will explore the current research related to age and EPOC, analyze the findings, and discuss additional avenues for future research.

Characterization Analysis And Design Of Mid-Wave Infrared Iii- V-Based Type-Ii Superlattice Nbn Photodetectors For Space Applications, Alexander Timothy Newell

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The performance of the mid-wave infrared InGaAs/InAsSb nBn photodetector is investigated and its viability for space applications is assessed. Three structures are grown with unique absorber layer doping profiles via molecular beam epitaxy. Material and device characterizations are performed and analyzed to determine the effects of doping on fundamental material parameters and detector performance. Noise-equivalent irradiance is calculated to be a factor of 4x that of an ideal detector exhibiting Rule 07 dark current and 100% quantum efficiency, demonstrating high sensitivity. The structures are then irradiated with 63 MeV protons to evaluate the extent of performance degradation over the course …

Deep Neural Network Based Tissue Deconvolution Of Circulating Tumor Cell Rna, Fengyao Yan, Limin Jiang, Fei Ye, Jie Ping, Tetiana Y. Bowley, Scott A. Ness, Chung-I Li, Dario Marchetti, Jijun Tang, Yan Guo Nov 2023

Deep Neural Network Based Tissue Deconvolution Of Circulating Tumor Cell Rna, Fengyao Yan, Limin Jiang, Fei Ye, Jie Ping, Tetiana Y. Bowley, Scott A. Ness, Chung-I Li, Dario Marchetti, Jijun Tang, Yan Guo

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Prior research has shown that the deconvolution of cell-free RNA can uncover the tissue origin. The conventional deconvolution approaches rely on constructing a reference tissue-specific gene panel, which cannot capture the inherent variation present in actual data. To address this, we have developed a novel method that utilizes a neural network framework to leverage the entire training dataset. Our approach involved training a model that incorporated 15 distinct tissue types. Through one semi-independent and two complete independent validations, including deconvolution using a semi in silico dataset, deconvolution with a custom normal tissue mixture RNA-seq data, and deconvolution of longitudinal circulating …

Approximately 20% of individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 experienced long-term health effects, as defined PCC. However, it is unknown if there are any early biomarkers associated with PCC or whether early intervention treatments may decrease the risk of PCC. In a secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial, this study demonstrates that among outpatients with SARS-CoV-2, increased IL-6 at time of infection is associated with increased odds of PCC. In addition, among individuals treated early, within 5 days of symptom onset, with COVID-19 convalescent plasma, there was a trend for decreased odds of PCC after adjusting for other demographic and clinical …

Dynamic Spectrum Management In 3d Networks Inspired By Biological Systems, Jordan Anthony Patrizi Oct 2023

Dynamic Spectrum Management In 3d Networks Inspired By Biological Systems, Jordan Anthony Patrizi

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In this thesis, the challenge of dynamic spectrum management is treated following an economic-based perspective. In particular, a novel bioinspired spectrum allocation from the Network Service Providers (NSPs) to the users is introduced, exploiting the theory of symbiosis under the free competition. The overall objective is to determine the NSPs optimal bandwidth prices to maximize their profit, while satisfying the users bandwidth needs. The aforementioned spectrum management framework is analyzed while exploiting a novel 3D network architecture consisting of High Altitude Platforms (HAPs), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and ground gNBs NSPs, each one of them presenting different operational characteristics and …

Quantitative Analyses Of T Cell Motion In Tissue Reveals Factors Driving T Cell Search In Tissues, David J. Torres, Paulus Mrass, Janie Byrum, Arrick Gonzales, Dominick N. Martinez, Evelyn Juarez, Emily Thompson, Vaiva Vezys, Melanie E. Moses, Judy L. Cannon

Pathology Research and Scholarship

T cells are required to clear infection, and T cell motion plays a role in how quickly a T cell finds its target, from initial naive T cell activation by a dendritic cell to interaction with target cells in infected tissue. To better understand how different tissue environments affect T cell motility, we compared multiple features of T cell motion including speed, persistence, turning angle, directionality, and confinement of T cells moving in multiple murine tissues using microscopy. We quantitatively analyzed naive T cell motility within the lymph node and compared motility parameters with activated CD8 T cells moving within …

Improving Human-Automation Collaboration In Motion Planning, Torin J. Adamson

Computer Science ETDs

Human-automation collaboration is becoming a part of everyday life as AI helps us drive, make decisions, and solve a variety of other tasks. However, safe and effective collaboration systems depend on factors in trust, communication, and more. Existing studies to explore these are typically carried out in laboratory settings, providing robust data under tight environmental control. However, human behavior evolves over time, driven by external factors that cannot be fully captured in single participation sessions. These factors form the "human context", contextualizing the behavioral data for a more complete understanding. In this thesis, video game adaptations upon conventional subject studies …

During the onset of neuropathic pain from a variety of etiologies, nociceptors become hypersensitized, releasing neurotransmitters and other factors from centrally-projecting nerve terminals within the dorsal spinal cord. Consequently, glial cells (astrocytes and microglia) in the spinal cord are activated and mediate the release of proinflammatory cytokines that act to enhance pain transmission and sensitize mechanical non-nociceptive fibers which ultimately results in light touch hypersensitivity, clinically observed as allodynia. Pramipexole, a D2/D3 preferring agonist, is FDA-approved for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and demonstrates efficacy in animal models of inflammatory pain. The clinical-stage investigational drug, R(+) enantiomer of pramipexole, dexpramipexole, …

Dectin-1 Multimerization And Signaling Depends On Fungal Β-Glucan Structure And Exposure, Eduardo U. Anaya, Akram Etemadi Amin, Michael J. Wester, Michael E. Danielson, Kyle S. Michel, Aaron K. Neumann Sep 2023

Dectin-1 Multimerization And Signaling Depends On Fungal Β-Glucan Structure And Exposure, Eduardo U. Anaya, Akram Etemadi Amin, Michael J. Wester, Michael E. Danielson, Kyle S. Michel, Aaron K. Neumann

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Dectin-1A is a C-type lectin innate immunoreceptor that recognizes β-(1,3;1,6)-glucan, a structural component of Candida species cell walls. β-Glucans can adopt solution structures ranging from random coil to insoluble fiber due to tertiary (helical) and quaternary structure. Fungal β-glucans of medium and high molecular weight are highly structured, but low molecular weight glucan is much less structured. Despite similar affinity for Dectin-1, the ability of glucans to induce Dectin-1A-mediated signaling correlates with degree of structure. Glucan denaturation experiments showed that glucan structure determines agonistic potential, but not receptor binding affinity. We explored the impact of glucan structure on molecular aggregation …
