A Watershed Issue: The Role Of Streamflow Protection In Northwest River Basin Management, Reed D. Benson Jan 1996

A Watershed Issue: The Role Of Streamflow Protection In Northwest River Basin Management, Reed D. Benson

Faculty Scholarship

Watershed management has become a popular approach to environmental problems in the Northwest. Federal, regional, state, local, and tribal watershed efforts are in progress throughout the region. The popularity of the watershed approach can be traced to ecological and political factors. Most watershed management activities, however, focus more on land use and riparian measures than on providing and protecting instreamflows. For both legal and political reasons, watershed efforts tend to avoid water rights issues. Such efforts tend not to be well connected with instream flow protection or water resource planning under state law. Unless they address the need for streamflows, …

Sperm Competition And Sex Allocation In Simultaneous Hermaphrodites, Eric Charnov Jan 1996

Sperm Competition And Sex Allocation In Simultaneous Hermaphrodites, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Sex allocation theory is developed for hermaphrodites having frequent copulations and long-term sperm storage. Provided the sperm displacement mechanisms are similar to those known in insects, the ESS allocation to sperm versus eggs satisfies a rather simple rule. There are no data to test this rule, as yet.

Voices/Voces In The Borderlands: A Colloquy On Re/Constructing Identities In Re/Constructed Legal Spaces, Margaret E. Montoya, Melissa Harrison

Faculty Scholarship

While we believe that the work of healing our cultural dyslexia is partly cognitive, in and through this paper we have tried to enact the experiential aspect. We may approach the entrances of the borderlands through reading and thinking, however we believe that the borderlands is a phenomenon of living, a phenomenon of well-intentioned people interacting in deliberate and thoughtful ways with those who are simultaneously like and unlike us/them. The borderlands require that we bring our critical faculties to bear on life's experiences, but, more often than not, we must suspend them in favor of more charitable and affiliative …

Activation Of Precipitated Iron Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts, Mehul D. Shroff Dec 1995

Activation Of Precipitated Iron Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts, Mehul D. Shroff

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) is an important step in the manufacture of synthetic fuels from coal. The use of iron catalysts for FTS, though desirable from the standpoint of process economy, is hampered by problems relating to catalyst attrition and carbon buildup. In addition, from a research perspective, there has been a long-standing controversy in the literature with regard to the nature of the active phase.

The effect of activation and reaction treatments on the resulting phase transformations in a commercial, precipitated and spray-dried, Fe2O3 - CuO - K2O Fischer-Tropsch catalyst have been studied. Different …

Meeting The Challenge Of Long-Term, Broad-Scale Ecological Experiments, Long-Term Intersite Decomposition Experiment Team Oct 1995

Meeting The Challenge Of Long-Term, Broad-Scale Ecological Experiments, Long-Term Intersite Decomposition Experiment Team

Long Term Ecological Research Network

Understanding ecological systems on the global scale will require an increase in preplanned, long-term, multisite studies. We describe an example of this type of research--a 10-year, 28-site experiment to test the effect of substrate quality and macroclimate on long-term decomposition and nutrient dynamics.

The success of the ecological community in meeting the challenges raised by research on global change depends on at least three factors. First, interesting ideas or hypotheses are essential to attract investigators. Second, increased funding will be required in order to conduct many of the measurements needed. Finally, scientists separated by long distances must be able to …
