Annual Report Of The University, 1995-1996, Volumes 1-5, University Of New Mexico
UNM Annual Reports
The Academic Services Units which report to the Associate Provost share the responsibility of maintaining and developing the institution-wide infrastructure without which the instructional programs of the University could not operate. Collectively, their activities impact the academic life of every undergraduate student, every member of the teaching faculty, most graduate students and alumni and large numbers of staff members. The three largest Units, the Office of Admissions, the Registrar's Office and the Office of Undergraduate Studies perform the functions which are essential to the academic operations of any university. For example, they are responsible for the administration of the basic …

Office of the Vice President for Research
It is a pleasure for me to release this 1996 annual report, which summarizes the University of New Mexico's (UNM) sponsored activities for fiscal year 1996 (i.e., July 1, 1995 - June 30, 1996), FY96. The purpose of this report is to present some statistics of FY96 sponsored research, public service and instruction efforts at the main campus, branches and the Health Sciences Center (HSC). UNM faculty have continued their commitment to excellence by seeking sponsored projects and producing scholarly and creative works. While the majority of research at UNM is faculty based, there is also an appreciable level of …
A Good Regulation Went Bad: Fractional Elk Graze New Mexico, Brian Thomas
A Good Regulation Went Bad: Fractional Elk Graze New Mexico, Brian Thomas
Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)
In 1989, the New Mexico State Game Commission (SGC) and Department of Game and Fish (DGF) promulgated the first of a new generation of regulations governing private landowner permits for elk. These regulations proposed to provide compensation to landowners for elk which invade and destroy their private property. With modifications, that original regulation was re-promulgated in 1995 as 19 N.M.A.C. 30.5, Private Land Elk License Allocation. The regulation requires landowners to demonstrate elk depredations, and once shown, allows the landowner access to a permit distribution system. Rather than "tooth and claw" depredations caused by large carnivores, elk cause "displacement" depredations. …

This paper discusses an approach to model the input/output characteristics of the Sinus-6 electron beam accelerator-driven backward wave oscillator. Since the Sinus-6 is extremely fast to warrant the inclusion of dynamical effects, and since the sampling interval in the experiment is not fixed, a static continuous neural network model is used to fit the experimental data. Simulation results show that such a simple nonlinear model is sufficient to accurately describe the input/output behavior of the Sinus-6-driven backward wave oscillator (BWO) and that the fitted output waveforms are basically noiseless. This model will be used to control the BWO in order …

I am pleased to release the 1996 Contract and Grant Awards Report, which lists contract and grant (C&G) awards received by the University of New Mexico during fiscal year 1996 (i.e. July 1, 1995 - June 30, 1996), FY96. These awards represent new funds that were acquired during FY96 by the main campus and branch campuses, and the Health Sciences Center (HSC). The HSC includes the School of Medicine, College of Nursing and College of Pharmacy. The C&G awards received for FY96 total $164.3M, of which $113.7M is attributed to the main campus and branch campuses and $50.7M to the …

Chinese Immigrants In Porfirian Mexico: A Preliminary Study Of Settlement, Economic Activity And Anti-Chinese Sentiment, Raymond B. Craib Iii
Chinese Immigrants In Porfirian Mexico: A Preliminary Study Of Settlement, Economic Activity And Anti-Chinese Sentiment, Raymond B. Craib Iii
Research Papers
On May 14, 1911 the revolutionary forces of Francisco Madero attacked the northern city of Torreon in the state of Coahuila, Mexico. The following morning, they victoriously entered the town. With the soldiers came about 4,000 individuals from towns and villages throughout the region. They and the soldiers soon began a plundering of the city that particularly targeted Chinese immigrants. By the end of the day, 303 Chinese and five Japanese lay dead; Chinese financial losses were estimated at over one million dollars. While the magnitude of the attack may have been an anomaly, the targeting of the Chinese was …

Potential Influences Of Biotic And Abiotic Factors On Patterns Of Activity In Galapagos Snakes: Locomotory Performance Or Prey Abundance?, Marco A. Altamirano
Potential Influences Of Biotic And Abiotic Factors On Patterns Of Activity In Galapagos Snakes: Locomotory Performance Or Prey Abundance?, Marco A. Altamirano
Biology ETDs
Biotic and abiotic factors were considered as the potential factors influencing the activity pattern of Galapagos snakes. Three hypothesis are tested in this study in order to examine the causes of variation in snake activity. The first hypothesis (variation in the number of snakes active throughout the day is caused by distribution and abundance of their prey) is rejected because snakes and lizards have different patterns of activity. Moreover, Chi-square Goodness-of-Fit test and 2 x 2 Contingency tables show significant differences between these patterns of activity. However there are hours of the day when lizard activity could influence snake activity. …

Climatic And Geomorphic Controls On Semi-Fluvial Ecosystems, Max Aldon “Tad” Crocker Jr.
Climatic And Geomorphic Controls On Semi-Fluvial Ecosystems, Max Aldon “Tad” Crocker Jr.
Biology ETDs
In most climatic regions, the growth of ecological knowledge for terrestrial and limnological components of landscapes have roughly occurred in tandem. But at a time when the world's deserts are increasingly used for human development, and particularly so along water courses, knowledge of how stream ecosystems function within semi-add landscapes has seriously lagged the productive history of terrestrial research there. How terrestrial and limnological components interact within semi-arid landscapes will elude a useful scientific understanding of semi-arid landscapes and will preclude wise landscape management policies as long as semi-arid fluvial ecosystems in general, and ephemeral streams in particular, remain poorly …

Guidelines For Measurements Of Woody Detritus In Forest Ecosystems, Mark E. Harmon, Jay Sexton
Guidelines For Measurements Of Woody Detritus In Forest Ecosystems, Mark E. Harmon, Jay Sexton
Long Term Ecological Research Network
This publication describes some of the most common methods used to quantify the amount and dynamics of woody detritus in forest ecosystems. A hierarchical scheme is presented that will help assure data comparability for intersite studies. For each type of measurement several methods are described and compared. Detailed guidelines are presented for measuring mass, nutrient scores, production, and decomposition processes. Additionally, references are included for more detailed process studies including nitrogen fixation, leaching. respiration, sporocarp production, and insect production.

Hispanic Pottery As Evidence Of Craft Specialization In Late Colonial New Mexico, 1790-1890, Charles M. Carrillo
Hispanic Pottery As Evidence Of Craft Specialization In Late Colonial New Mexico, 1790-1890, Charles M. Carrillo
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation argues that some Hispanic villagers living in the frontier colony of New Mexico in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were engaged in pottery manufacture. Population growth and economic changes brought about conditions in which many Hispanics, when disenfranchised from productive farming and ranching, turned first to ceramic manufacture as an alternative strategy and eventually to ceramic craft specialization.
Archaeologists working with Spanish colonial, Mexican Republic, and territorial period sites in New Mexico and southern Colorado normally assume that the ceramics recovered from these sites were produced by Native Americans and acquired by trade. While this is true in …
