Faculty Publications And Creative Works 2001, Office Of The Vice President For Research

Office of the Vice President for Research

One of the ways in which we recognize our faculty at the University of New Mexico is through Faculty Publications & Creative Works. An annual publication, it highlights our faculty's scholarly and creative activities and achievements and serves as a compendium of UNM faculty efforts during the 2001 calendar year. Faculty Publications & Creative Works strives to illustrate the depth and breadth of research activities performed throughout our University's laboratories, studios and classrooms. We believe that the communication of individual research is a significant method of sharing concepts and thoughts and ultimately inspiring the birth of new ideas. In support …

Evolution Of Mammal Life Histories, Eric Charnov Jan 2001

Evolution Of Mammal Life Histories, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

If we assume that adult life span and age-at-maturity are described correctly by quarter power allometries across (typical) mammal species, we are tempted to look for some fundamental explanation. The explanation must acknowledge that within-species growth is sigmoid and not a power function at all, and that natural selection probably sets the age at maturity in the face of externally imposed mortality, while also allowing some mortality adjustment due to internal factors. This paper develops hypotheses to account for the above scaling rules and it predicts the numeric values of several new dimensionless numbers that interrelate growth, mortality and investment …

Disturbed Landscape/Disturbing Processes: Environmental History For The Twenty-First Century, Vera Norwood Jan 2001

Disturbed Landscape/Disturbing Processes: Environmental History For The Twenty-First Century, Vera Norwood

American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

On the first weekend of May 2000, the opening act of the nation's most impressive environmental drama of the summer was staged in Los Alamos, New Mexico. News releases covered a massive forest fire, named the Cerro Grande, exploding through forest stands, consuming over 40,000 acres of homes, recreation areas, and wildlands, burning perilously close to nuclear facilities, and threatening religious sites of Santa Clara pueblo. The fire, generated from a Park Service prescribed burn set in Bandolier National Monument and feeding on heavy fuel loads in the Santa Fe National Forest, raged out of control for days. Los Alamos …

Learning Through Service In A Clinical Setting: The Effect Of Specialization On Social Justice & Skills Training, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez Jan 2001

Learning Through Service In A Clinical Setting: The Effect Of Specialization On Social Justice & Skills Training, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez

Faculty Scholarship

Arguing against the trend toward specialization in clinical legal education, this essay addresses potential limitations of specialized legal clinics in furthering the dual mission of clinical legal education: social justice and skills training. It points out that specialized clinics limit access to justice by leaving the myriad needs of clients partially unmet. They limit students' learning about the complex needs of clients and students' ability to discover broad inequities in the legal system. Specialization makes it more difficult to train students to be creative problem solvers, and affects their professional socialization

Mary Daily V. Boston College: The Impermissibility Of Single-Sex Classes In Private Universities, Maryam Ahranjani Jan 2001

Mary Daily V. Boston College: The Impermissibility Of Single-Sex Classes In Private Universities, Maryam Ahranjani

Faculty Scholarship

This Comment discusses the rationale underlying single-sex education and the diversity in its implementation. This Comment argues that not only are single-sex classrooms withing private undergraduate institutions legally unsound, but also that this approach fails to address long-term public policy concerns about the situation of women in education. As the United States grapples with education reform, it is far too easy to initiate Band-Aid solutions. Single-sex education, ranging from single-sex classrooms to single-sex public schools, should exist as an option, but Title IX and equal protection standards must be satisfied. The first section of this article discusses the historical perspective …

Upper Rio Grande Basin: Finding Flexibility In Federal Reservoir System Operations Within The Web Of Water Laws, Policies, And Institutions, Gail Stockton, William Deragon, Lisa Robert Jan 2001

Upper Rio Grande Basin: Finding Flexibility In Federal Reservoir System Operations Within The Web Of Water Laws, Policies, And Institutions, Gail Stockton, William Deragon, Lisa Robert

Law of the Rio Chama

An intricate structure of water laws, policies and institutions in the upper Rio Grande basin provides the framework for operation of nearly a dozen federal reservoirs and related projects by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation. These two agencies are responsible, respectively, for controlling and safely passing flood flows, and for storing and releasing water for agricultural, municipal / industrial use and other uses. The institutions encountered or affected by the Rio Grande as it flows from its headwaters in Colorado to Fort Quitman, Texas, include two counties, as many local governments and a myriad …

Cleaning Up The Tracks: Superfund Meets Rails-To-Trails, Clifford J. Villa Jan 2001

Cleaning Up The Tracks: Superfund Meets Rails-To-Trails, Clifford J. Villa

Faculty Scholarship

For more than one hundred years, railroad cars rumbled and roared along tracks in the Coeur d'Alene River Basin, serving the mining industry in the Panhandle of northern Idaho. As in many parts of the American West, the history of railroads in northern Idaho largely reflects the history of mining in the region. The first gold was discovered in this area in 1883, the same year that the area saw its first line of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1885, the Bunker Hill mine was established near the present town of Kellogg. Four years later, the first rail line of …

Erosion Study In Tajique Watershed, Gretchen Newman Jan 2001

Erosion Study In Tajique Watershed, Gretchen Newman

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The purpose of this report is to document an II-month study of the erosional effects livestock grazing had on Tajique Creek hillslopes in the Cibola National Forest, New Mexico. Two study areas were selected with similar characteristics. The two areas were located approximately one eighth of a mile apart and varied by ownership and use. The southernmost study area is Forest Service property in which local citizens have obtained permits for livestock ranching. The northern most study area is privately owned and has not been used for livestock grazing in the past 10 years. Eleven months of erosion measurements and …
