Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) Of The Mammalian Order Chiroptera, Donald W. Duszynski Jan 2002

Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) Of The Mammalian Order Chiroptera, Donald W. Duszynski

Special Publications

The coccidia are protists (phylum Apicomplexa) that, likely, are both the most abundant (numbers of individual zoites) and most speciose of all the kinds of parasites found inion mammals. They also are among the least studied and understood, with the exception of those species that cause pathology in domesticated Artiodactyla. In this review, I focus only on the largest family ofthe phylum, Eimeriidae Minchin, 1903, because its members often are among the most prevalent apicomplexans of mammals, and because there has never been a taxonomic summation for those species that infect Chirpotera. In all published descriptions of bat coccidia, members …

Office of the Vice President for Research

Introduction One of the ways in which we recognize our faculty at the University of New Mexico is through Faculty Publications & Creative Works. An annual publication, it highlights our faculty's scholarly and creative activities and achievements and serves as a compendium of UNM faculty efforts during the 2001 calendar year. Faculty Publications & Creative Works strives to illustrate the depth and breadth of research activities performed throughout our University's laboratories, studios and classrooms. We believe that the communication of individual research is a significant method of sharing concepts and thoughts and ultimately inspiring the birth of new ideas. In …

Why They Won't Take The Money: Black Grandparents And The Success Of Informal Kinship Care, Sonia M. Gipson Rankin Jan 2002

Why They Won't Take The Money: Black Grandparents And The Success Of Informal Kinship Care, Sonia M. Gipson Rankin

Faculty Scholarship

In this note, Ms. Gipson Rankin discusses kinship care as an alternative to placing children into foster care. For generations, particularly in the Black community, grandparents and other older relatives have played a crucial role in raising the children of younger relatives when they have become unable or unwilling to raise the children themselves. This system, known as kinship care, has ensured that thousands of American children are cared for and raised by members of their own families. The note explores the history and nature of the kinship care system, and analyzes federal and state policies that impact the system. …

Reproductive Effort, Offspring Size And Benefit/Cost Ratios In The Classification Of Life Histories, Eric Charnov Jan 2002

Reproductive Effort, Offspring Size And Benefit/Cost Ratios In The Classification Of Life Histories, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

There have been many attempts to document links between reproductive allocation and factors such as adult body size and demography. This paper suggests that among closely related taxa, two dimensionless numbers, each a benefit—cost ratio summarizing reproductive timing, allocation and demography, are invariants and thus are useful to classify life histories. The two numbers are E/α and C·E, where E is average adult life span,α is age-at-first-reproduction and C is average mass (per adult) devoted to reproduction per unit of time, divided by the average adult body mass (m); C is usually called reproductive effort'. Since E−1 is the average …

Water And Population In The American West, Denise D. Fort Jan 2002

Water And Population In The American West, Denise D. Fort

Faculty Scholarship

The American West is justly famed for its sunshine and wide skies.1 However, there is a potent combination of low rainfall and growing population in the West that ensures that water, or the lack of it, will remain another well-known feature of the region. As the number of people sharing already stressed water supplies increases, the economic, ecological, and social costs of providing water become more evident. Agriculture consumes about 90% of the water that is extracted in the West, and the transfer from agricultural to municipal and industrial uses is invariably complex. Increased water extraction has resulted in the …

Virtual Work And Leadership: The Role Of The Internet, Complexity, Creativity, And Knowledge Workers, Johann Van Reenen Jan 2002

Virtual Work And Leadership: The Role Of The Internet, Complexity, Creativity, And Knowledge Workers, Johann Van Reenen

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This chapter presents the case for strong leadership to develop an internationally distributed virtual workforce. It is a speculative approach to how work and workers may behave in a future where most of their work and interactions will be virtual and disconnected from their physical location. The lessons that can be learned from the natural world are explored especially from complexity theories. Examples are provided of natural systems in action and the insights others have drawn from these theories and how this may inform decision-making, risk-taking and the management of virtual workers. The impact of the Internet on knowledge creation …

Neutrosophy, A New Branch Of Philosophy, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2002

Neutrosophy, A New Branch Of Philosophy, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper is presented a new branch of philosophy, called neutrosphy, which studies the origin, nature, and scope of neutralities, as well as their interactions with different ideational spectra. The Fundamental Thesis: Any idea is T% true, I% indeterminate, and F% false, - where T, I, F are standard or non-standard subsets included in ]0-, 1+[. The Fundamental Theory: Every idea tends to be neutralized, diminished, balanced by ideas (not only , as Hegel asserted) - as a state of equilibrium. Neutrosophy is the base of neutrosophic logic, a multiple value logic that generalizes the fuzzy logic, of neutrosophic …

Shrimp Adjust Their Sex Ratio To Fluctuating Age Distributions, Eric Charnov, Robert Hannah Jan 2002

Shrimp Adjust Their Sex Ratio To Fluctuating Age Distributions, Eric Charnov, Robert Hannah

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Long-term data sets that quantitatively confirm basic ecological theory are rare for field populations. Highly variable recruitment often causes wide temporal variation in population age distribution and basic theory for adaptive sex ratio often predicts sex ratio tracking' to match the fluctuating age distribution. Using sex-changing shrimp as a model system, we test this in a new data set of 20 years duration. The new data support the theory, despite intense fishery exploitation that itself has greatly altered the age distribution in recent years.

Giving Suckers (And Salmon) An Even Break: Klamath Basin Water And The Endangered Species Act, Reed D. Benson Jan 2002

Giving Suckers (And Salmon) An Even Break: Klamath Basin Water And The Endangered Species Act, Reed D. Benson

Faculty Scholarship

An extreme drought hit the Klamath River Basin of southern Oregon and northern California in 2001, and a remarkable water controversy soon followed. Hundreds of farmers, who for decades had reliably received irrigation water from the federal government's Klamath Project, were told, for the first time, that they would get none that year. Instead, the government would hold the water in Upper Klamath Lake and release it to flow down the Klamath River in an effort to ensure the survival of fish protected by the Endangered Species Act.
