Taking Out The Jacks : Issues Of Jetty Jack Removal In Bosque And River Restoration Planning, Kathy Grassel
Taking Out The Jacks : Issues Of Jetty Jack Removal In Bosque And River Restoration Planning, Kathy Grassel
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
This professional project report presents a history of jetty jacks from the 1940s to the present and offers some comments and recommendations on what the future has in store for jetty jacks based on the past. This history will trace how: • jetty jacks contributed to the success of the massive human undertaking of re-shaping the Rio Grande for the protection of property, levees, and riverbanks from flooding; • the expande role of jetty jacks in the establishment of a straight channel in the Middle Rio Grande Valley; • loss of function of jetty jacks in a post-dam era, and …
A Three-Dimensional Model For The Use Of Expert Psychiatric And Psychological Evidence In False Confession Defenses Before The Trier Of Fact, Joshua E. Kastenberg
A Three-Dimensional Model For The Use Of Expert Psychiatric And Psychological Evidence In False Confession Defenses Before The Trier Of Fact, Joshua E. Kastenberg
Faculty Scholarship
Part I of this Article delineates a defendant's right to present voluntariness and credibility evidence against his or her confession. This section analyzes the basic constitutional framework of how a defendant can present this evidence and describes the traditional safeguards against false confessions. This background information provides a context for the overarching issue of expert testimony admissibility. Part II provides a basic understanding of differences between the psychiatric (medical model) and psychological (social model) approach to false confessions. It then examines the types of false confession defenses used by defendants and the interrogation techniques challenged by defendants. Part III reviews …

UNM Annual Reports
VITAL ACADEMIC CLIMATE* by Brian Foster, Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs A great university engages students and faculty fully in important ideas and issues ... not just to learn about them, but to take them apart and put them back together, to debate, deconstruct, resist, reconstruct and build upon them. Engagement of this sort takes concentration and commitment, and it produces the kind of discipline and passion that leads to student and faculty success and satisfaction in their studies, research, performance, artistic activity and service. It is also the kind of activity that creates a solid, nurturing spirit of community. …

Effects Of Size And Temperature On Developmental Time, James Gillooly, Eric Charnov, Geoffrey West, Van Savage, James Brown
Effects Of Size And Temperature On Developmental Time, James Gillooly, Eric Charnov, Geoffrey West, Van Savage, James Brown
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Body size and temperature are the two most important variables affecting nearly all biological rates and times. The relationship of size and temperature to development is of particular interest, because during ontogeny size changes and temperature often varies. Here we derive a general model, based on first principles of allometry and biochemical kinetics, that predicts the time of ontogenetic development as a function of body mass and temperature. The model fits embryonic development times spanning a wide range of egg sizes and incubation temperatures for birds and aquatic ectotherms (fish, amphibians, aquatic insects and zooplankton). The model also describes nearly …

Eastern Wood-Pewee Specimens From New Mexico, Plus A Reevaluation Of Mensural Criteria For Identifying This Taxon, John P. Hubbard
Eastern Wood-Pewee Specimens From New Mexico, Plus A Reevaluation Of Mensural Criteria For Identifying This Taxon, John P. Hubbard
Occasional Papers
To my knowledge, no specimen of the Eastern Wood-Pewee (Contopus virens) has been reported from New Mexico, although a state occurrence was verified on the basis of a vocalizing bird recorded in Santa Fe County on 11 June 1988 (Hubbard 1988; identification confirmed by J.R. Travis). Based on that record, a few other reports of vocalizing birds, and the species status in adjacent states (e.g., A.O.U. 1998), the Eastern Wood-Pewee (henceforth EAWP) is probably a regular, but rare migrant in New Mexico. Additional verified occurrences, however, are needed to validate this species' status in the state, including tape recordings and …
