Synovial Fluid Inflammatory Profiles Did Not Differ Between Isolated Anterior Cruciate Ligament And Multi-Ligament Knee Injuries, Cale A. Jacobs, Robert C. Schenck Jr., Leorrie A. Watson, Caitlin E.W. Conley, Darren L. Johnson, Austin V. Stone, Christian Lattermann, Dustin L. Richter

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Background: Postoperative arthrofibrosis is more common following surgical treatment of multi-ligament knee injury (MLKI) than isolated anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. It has been proposed that the increased prevalence of postoperative arthrofibrosis after MLKIs may be due to increased inflammation secondary to greater trauma to the joint. The purpose of this study was to compare synovial concentrations of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines between patients with MLKI and ACL injuries.

Methods: Synovial fluid was aspirated from the operative knee at the time of surgery from 14 patients with MLKI and 10 patients with isolated ACL injury. Structures injured, the time between …

Navigating Murky Waters: Strengthening Water Protections In A Post-Sackett Landscape, Brittany Herrera May 2024

Navigating Murky Waters: Strengthening Water Protections In A Post-Sackett Landscape, Brittany Herrera

New Mexico Law Review

Nearly ninety percent of New Mexico’s rivers and streams potentially have been removed from federal protection under the Clean Water Act following the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Sackett v. EPA to substantially reduce what qualify as “waters of the United States.” Before this decision, many ephemeral streams, tributaries, and wetlands were protected by the Environmental Protection Agency. Permits are essential to protect not only the environment but landowners as well. The New Mexico Environment Department is in the process of developing its own surface water discharge permitting program, as the EPA’s jurisdiction contracted commensurately with the Supreme Court’s …

A Rechargeable Metal-Co2 Battery Using Lower-Cost Materials, Chris Fetrow May 2024

A Rechargeable Metal-Co2 Battery Using Lower-Cost Materials, Chris Fetrow

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

High energy density, low-cost chemical conversion batteries are widely studied for their potential application to applications in which current battery technologies are unsuitable replacements for fossil fuel-powered systems. The demonstration of rechargeable chemical conversion batteries, and particularly batteries without the fatal flaw of high overpotential due to the difficulties inherent to chemical conversion reactions, is of great interest to further both this aim. In this work, a secondary Al-CO2 battery was demonstrated using a homogeneous aluminum iodide redox mediator to enable the battery’s discharge and charge at a high energy density and a low overpotential of 0.05 Volts. The operation …

Increasing Bacterial Tolerance And Metabolism Of The Biofuel, N-Butanol Using Community-Level Evolution And Functional Genomics, Kayley T. You Mak May 2024

Increasing Bacterial Tolerance And Metabolism Of The Biofuel, N-Butanol Using Community-Level Evolution And Functional Genomics, Kayley T. You Mak

Biology ETDs

Bioremediation capability should be developed along with biofuel technology to mitigate the potential damage of future spills. Biobutanol is being developed since n-butanol is more energy dense and less volatile than ethanol. A bottleneck for industrial production of biobutanol is its toxicity; most microbes cannot survive ~1.5% v/v. Thus, microbial bioremediation of n-butanol would need microbes that can both tolerate and metabolize butanol. We used ecological and evolutionary biology approaches to find bacteria that could tolerate and metabolize butanol. Ecological community-level assays followed by 16S amplicon sequencing were completed to identify butanol-tolerant artificial bacterial communities. Secondly, we looked for bacteria …

The Enzymatic Regulation Of Contraction-Induced Toll-Like Receptor 4 Shedding From C2c12 Myotubes, Rebekah C. Gridley May 2024

The Enzymatic Regulation Of Contraction-Induced Toll-Like Receptor 4 Shedding From C2c12 Myotubes, Rebekah C. Gridley

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Stimulated contractions are shown to increase toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) release from C2C12 myotubes in vitro. The purpose of this study was to determine if the release of TLR4 from myotubes is controlled by proteolytic membrane cleavage. A broad-spectrum metalloprotease inhibitor was used to test this hypothesis in a C2C12 cell culture model, and TLR4 concentrations in the cell culture supernatant were measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) following stimulated myotube contractions.

ELISA analysis revealed TLR4 concentrations below the sensitivity threshold of the ELISA kit for all experimental conditions. In confirming the effectiveness of the electrical pulse stimulation (EPS) treatment, …

Sub-Stage Climatic Shifts During Mis 11 Refined From Diatom Assemblage Reconstruction In The Valles Caldera, New Mexico, Savannah Cutler May 2024

Sub-Stage Climatic Shifts During Mis 11 Refined From Diatom Assemblage Reconstruction In The Valles Caldera, New Mexico, Savannah Cutler

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Diatom assemblage reconstruction from the Valles Caldera sediment core (VC-3) was utilized to infer climatic and aquatic changes during a 50-thousand-year [ka] period in the Mid-Pleistocene (435-385 ka). This 50 ka interval spans most of Marine Isotope Stage 11 (MIS 11) – one of the most prominent interglacials of the past 500 ka – and is widely considered an analog for the Holocene and future climate regimes. Nearly all records from MIS 11 are either marine or ice-core based, making VC-3 unique among lacustrine sediment records as it captures insolation variations and climatic changes during the mid-Pleistocene. Analysis of the …

Molecular Dynamics Insights Into The Structural Behavior And Interactions Of Complex Biological Systems, Shenghan Song May 2024

Molecular Dynamics Insights Into The Structural Behavior And Interactions Of Complex Biological Systems, Shenghan Song

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

All-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are essential for examining the structural and dynamic aspects of proteins at high resolution, complementing experiments limited by resolution, size, and complexity. Advancements in algorithms and hardware have enhanced the role of computational tools in scientific research, allowing for more accurate simulations of proteins with standard residues. However, simulating real biological systems, which include non-standard residues such as lipid membranes, remains challenging despite the assistance of tools like CHARMM-GUI. My research initially focused on simulating the PICK1 BAR dimer using steered MD simulations to investigate its structure and dynamics. Simulation works expanded to include systems …

Agroecology And Soil Stewardship: Values And Techniques Of Smallholder Farmers In Bernalillo County, Stephanie Olivas May 2024

Agroecology And Soil Stewardship: Values And Techniques Of Smallholder Farmers In Bernalillo County, Stephanie Olivas

Geography ETDs

Agrarian movements around the world use agroecology to build sovereignty and steward dynamic ecosystems. Research has shown that agroecological farmers steward more resilient crops, more resilient soil biomes, and greater biodiversity than conventional agriculture. GIS and remote sensing offer many tools to detect the impacts of these farmers on the environment, but it is less clear how such technologies fit into agroecological goals. This study asks: what values, experiences and knowledge do smallholder producers in Bernalillo County embody in their soil stewardship practices? Also, what experience or knowledge do smallholder producers in Bernalillo County have about remote sensing, and would …

Women Doctoral Students In Computer Science: Nevertheless, They Persist, Shannon L. Mccoy-Hayes Edd May 2024

Women Doctoral Students In Computer Science: Nevertheless, They Persist, Shannon L. Mccoy-Hayes Edd

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Throughout millennia systemic restrictions have prevented women from full participation in science. Even now, with science ubiquitous to life as we know it, double standards impact women’s access and equal participation in STEM. Computer science (CS) is one STEM field where women remain significantly underrepresented in both academia and the workforce, yet despite decades worth of semi-annual reporting, there is still no consensus as to why. A survey was deployed to twenty-nine institutions inviting women doctoral students in CS to participate in personal interviews. Six women from different institutions at different stages of their programs responded. Qualitative interviews using phenomenological …

Variability In Large Mammal Activity Patterns When Visiting Water In New Mexico, Juan E. Camacho May 2024

Variability In Large Mammal Activity Patterns When Visiting Water In New Mexico, Juan E. Camacho

Biology ETDs

Studying activity patterns of animals can provide vital information about how different species react to environmental changes, yet camera trap studies typically neglect the temporal aspect of the data. Using a 10-year camera trap dataset on Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, NM, we explored daily activity patterns when visiting water of five large mammal species. The species of study were mule deer, pronghorn, elk, oryx, and coyote. All species showed significant variability in activity patterns from site to site across the refuge. Within a site, differences in activity across years and seasons were less pronounced. Mule deer and coyote showed very …

Exploring The Complex Landscape Of Proteins: From Intrinsically Disordered Proteins To Peptidomimetics Through Computational Approaches, Tongtong Li May 2024

Exploring The Complex Landscape Of Proteins: From Intrinsically Disordered Proteins To Peptidomimetics Through Computational Approaches, Tongtong Li

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Protein function is closely related to their three-dimensional structures. However, some proteins lack a well-defined structure, so-called intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). They prefer to interconvert among different conformations in isolation and undergo a disorder-to-order transition upon binding to a partner. IDPs or proteins with intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs), constituting a large portion of the human proteome, are involved in many cellular activities and are therefore highly relevant to our health. In my dissertation, I used computational methods to systematically study systems including dynamic proteins, disordered proteins in complex with their targets, and synthetic peptidomimetics to reveal the unique physical properties …

New Insights Into T Lymphocyte-Mediated Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Claire Marie Doherty May 2024

New Insights Into T Lymphocyte-Mediated Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Claire Marie Doherty

Biology ETDs

With nearly a third of the global population infected with the protozoan, Toxoplasma gondii, this parasite sits at a unique, immune-mediated interface of health and disease. In healthy individuals, Toxoplasma results in a chronic yet asymptomatic infection of the central nervous system. This quiescent infection is the result of parasite exploitation of host immune barriers, yet Toxoplasma can quickly become an opportunistic pathogen when immunity is disrupted by illness or immunosuppressive therapies. During the HIV-AIDS pandemic, it was observed that once latent Toxoplasma infections became the cause of severe, even fatal, disease in the absence of an intact T …

Again, mothers were the main target audience of breastfeeding infographics. Also, the use of multiple racial colors - White, …

Unraveling The Paradox Of The 'Great Speciators': Evolutionary Dynamics Of A Geographic Radiation Of Island Kingfishers (Todiramphus), Jenna Merle Mccullough May 2024

Unraveling The Paradox Of The 'Great Speciators': Evolutionary Dynamics Of A Geographic Radiation Of Island Kingfishers (Todiramphus), Jenna Merle Mccullough

Biology ETDs

The paradox of the ‘Great Speciators’ describes a biogeographic pattern in which geographically widespread lineages have strong overwater dispersal capabilities, yet exhibit genetic and phenotypic divergence between islands, suggesting limited dispersal and cessation of gene flow. In my dissertation, I leveraged whole genomes and two comprehensive trait datasets of dispersal ability and plumage coloration of all described diversity within Todiramphus kingfishers, a rapid radiation of largely island endemic ‘Great Speciators.’ Chapter 1 reveals that whole genome datasets do not outright solve the evolutionary relationships of this clade and that widespread incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) and gene flow are sources of …

Crossing The Ocean: The Importance Of Gene Flow In Island Evolution, Ethan F. Gyllenhaal May 2024

Crossing The Ocean: The Importance Of Gene Flow In Island Evolution, Ethan F. Gyllenhaal

Biology ETDs

Islands have long been a critical arena for the development of ecological and evolutionary theory, particular due to persistent open-water gaps between them. In this dissertation I demonstrates how these caps are permeable, which can be leveraged to understand evolution on islands and more broadly. The first chapter develops this connection between ongoing, overwater gene flow and island biogeographic theory, and tests it on an archipelago species. The second take a three-pronged approach in demonstrating how over-water gene flow can bias phylogenetic inference, and how many phylogeographic metrics in islands are likely shaped by long-term gene flow. The final two …

Sensitive Developmental Windows In Craniofacial And Dental Fluctuating Asymmetry, Emily Moes May 2024

Sensitive Developmental Windows In Craniofacial And Dental Fluctuating Asymmetry, Emily Moes

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines early life environments and changes in skeletal and dental tissues by focusing on plasticity reflected in fluctuating asymmetry (FA). Chapter 2 shows that microscopic enamel defects on canines are associated with craniofacial FA in two colonial Mexican cemeteries. Chapters 3 and 4 use data from dental casts and associated health records from a 20th century longitudinal growth study. I compare dental FA in the deciduous (chapter 3) and permanent (chapter 4) dentition to sociocultural and environmental stressors. In their prenatal and childhood environments, females’ dental plasticity may be more responsive to frailty or chronic stresses while males …

Physical And Stochiometric Controls On Nutrient Uptake And Ecosystem Respiration In Contrasting Sites, Jancoba K. Dorley May 2024

Physical And Stochiometric Controls On Nutrient Uptake And Ecosystem Respiration In Contrasting Sites, Jancoba K. Dorley

Civil Engineering ETDs

Meteorological, hydrological, and biogeochemical processes naturally control stream ecosystems. These processes define the frequency and distribution of precipitation and the supply and demand of solutes and particles to support aquatic food chains through space and time. Studies have also found that stream ecosystems are also controlled by anthropogenic activities, which occur on a much shorter timescale. These anthropogenic activities affect stream ecosystems' structure and function from local to planetary changes to the environment. It is essential for scientists and engineers to understand the relationships between naturally occurring processes and those created by human activities for a better interpretation of stream …

Pythagorean Neutrosophic Triplet Groups, Madad Khan, Muhammad Zeeshan, Saima Anis, Florentin Smrandache May 2024

Pythagorean Neutrosophic Triplet Groups, Madad Khan, Muhammad Zeeshan, Saima Anis, Florentin Smrandache

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

It is a well-known fact that groups are the only algebraic structures having a single binary operation that is mathematically so perfect that it is impossible to introduce a richer structure within it. The main purpose of this study is to introduce the notion of the Pythagorean neutrosophic triplet (PNT) which is the generalization of neutrosophic triplet (NT). The PNT is an algebraic structure of three ordered pairs that satisfy several properties under the binary operation (B-Operation) " " . Furthermore, we used the PNTs to introduce the novel concept of a Pythagorean neutrosophic triplet group (PNTG). The algebraic structure …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is an illness condition in which the glucose level is abnormal and causes harm to the peripheral nervous fibers originating the diabetic neuropathy. The major frequent damage occurs in the sensory-motor system, whose sym ptoms include alteration in tactile perception, temperature, and loss of sensitivity in hands and feet. The evidence for treatments that include neural mobilization is limited, so this study aims to determine if intervention strategies with neural mobilization improve both sensory and functional responses in the neuropathy diabetic peripheral. We selected plithogenic statistics to carry out the statistical study because this disease is …

Analysis Of Scientific Production On Neutrosophy: A Latin American Perspective, Oscar E. Velázquez-Soto, Eduardo Enrique Chibas Muñoz, Maykel Leyva Vazquez, Lee Yang Díaz Chieng, Jesús Estupiñan Ricardo

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Neutrosophy is a branch of philosophy proposed in 1998 by Romanian philosopher and mathematician F. Smarandache, which studies the origin, nature, and scope of neutrality and its interaction with different spectra of ideas. Because it is a relatively new field, specific scientific production on this subject may be limited, but as it develops, new research and contributions are likely to emerge. This is why it is becoming more necessary to undertake studies to understand the evolution, impact, and scope of research, especially in a context where it had never been examined in depth before: in the Latin American region. This …

Late Cretaceous Ammonites And Other Non-Rudist Mollusks From Costa Rica And Their Paleoecology, Esteban David Lopez-Murillo May 2024

Late Cretaceous Ammonites And Other Non-Rudist Mollusks From Costa Rica And Their Paleoecology, Esteban David Lopez-Murillo

Earth and Planetary Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The Nicoya region in northwestern Costa Rica contains a rich record of Upper Cretaceous fossiliferous sediments, which have received variable levels of study over the past several decades. In particular, rudists from these deposits have been well-characterized, however, the non-rudist ammonite, gastropod, and bivalve fauna have received much less attention. However, this area is particularly important because the Nicoya region was attached to the southernmost tip of North America, making it a unique crossroad between the western Tethys (Caribbean) and Pacific Oceans. Here I present a detailed investigation of these rocks and their fauna between the Late Campanian to Early …
