Faithful Leisure, Faithful Work: Religious Practice As An Act Of Consumption In Nepal, Charis Boke
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
The aim of this paper is to further discussion on the changing landscape of Nepals socioeconomic world as seen through the lens of religious worship sites and practices. Anthropologists of religion in Nepal have a long history of exploring worship sites and practices, and the ways in which those sites and practices integrate, and integrate into, Nepali cultures and societies. As Nepal is increasingly connected to an economically, politically and socially globalizing world, a fresh review of worship sites and practices is in order—not only from a strictly ethnographic, documentary perspective, but from a perspective that considers how the rapid …

On September 13, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by a vote of 143 in favor to 4 against with 11 abstentions. Thirty years of coalition building and lobbying by the International Indian Treaty Council and indigenous groups worldwide and more than two decades of negotiation within the UN preceded the vote.1 The groundwork for the declaration arguably goes as far back as September 1923, when Cayuga chief Deskaheh traveled to Geneva on behalf of the Haudenosaunee (the Iroquois Confederacy) to petition the League of Nations about violations of international law …

Minimally Invasive Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers Array For Biomedical Applications, Xiaoyang Cheng
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Ultrasound covers a broad range of applications from underwater exploration and nondestructive evaluation of materials to medical diagnosis and treatment. The ultrasonic transducer plays an important role in determining the resolution, sensitivity, as well as other critical diagnostic capabilities of an ultrasonic detection or imaging system. Currently piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers dominate the market. The device performance of the piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer in medical applications is limited by the material properties and related electrical and acoustic impedance match issues. The fabrication of piezoelectric transducer array requires meticulous handcrafting. It is difficult and expensive to fabricate densely populated piezoelectric array. The Capacitive …

1.2-Micron Multi-Section Quantum Dot Superluminescent Diodes, Therese Saiz
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Superluminescent diodes (SLD) with a center wavelength of 1.2μm are of interest for use in medical imaging of skin tissue especially in the field of optical coherence tomography (OCT). In this thesis a ridge-waveguide multi-section quantum dot SLD that emits at 1.2μm with a bandwidth greater than 100nm and a power greater than 0.2mW is presented. The multi-section SLD allows simultaneous tuning of the ground state emission and excited state emission, resulting in wide bandwidth and high power. Theoretical equations describing the intensity output of the multi-section SLD configuration are presented. It is found that these equations are able to …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Pkc Activation On In Vitro Prostate Cell Metabolism Using 13c Nmr, Katrina Peariso, Kimberly Butler, Laurel Sillerud
Investigation Of The Effect Of Pkc Activation On In Vitro Prostate Cell Metabolism Using 13c Nmr, Katrina Peariso, Kimberly Butler, Laurel Sillerud
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
PKC isozymes have been implicated in regulating everything from transformation and proliferation of prostate cancer cells to apoptosis. Many recent studies have implicated PKC-e, a novel PKC, in supporting cell survival and proliferation in addition to having an anti-apoptotic effect through interactions with BAX. PKC-d is another novel PKC that has been shown to promote apoptosis in LNCaP cells, and thus antagonizing the antiapoptotic effect of PKC-e. 13C-NMR and 13C(3)-aspartate supplemented media were utilized to examine the metabolism of LNCaP, DU-145 and BPH cell lines with and without activation of PKC by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). Equivalent amounts of 13C-lactate …
Oil And Gas Projects In The Western Amazon: Threats To Wilderness, Biodiversity, And Indigenous Peoples, Matt Finer, Clinton N. Jenkins, Stuart L. Pimm, Brian Keane, Carl Ross
Oil And Gas Projects In The Western Amazon: Threats To Wilderness, Biodiversity, And Indigenous Peoples, Matt Finer, Clinton N. Jenkins, Stuart L. Pimm, Brian Keane, Carl Ross
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
The western Amazon is the most biologically rich part of the Amazon basin and is home to a great diversity of indigenous ethnic groups, including some of the worlds last uncontacted peoples living in voluntary isolation. Unlike the eastern Brazilian Amazon, it is still a largely intact ecosystem. Underlying this landscape are large reserves of oil and gas, many yet untapped. The growing global demand is leading to unprecedented exploration and development in the region. Without improved policies, the increasing scope and magnitude of planned extraction means that environmental and social impacts are likely to intensify. We review the most …
Testing The Divergent Pathway Model For Melanoma, David Kunkel, Dan Tandberg, Marianne Berwick
Testing The Divergent Pathway Model For Melanoma, David Kunkel, Dan Tandberg, Marianne Berwick
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Post hoc analysis of a large US population-based study of melanoma was carried out to test Whitemans divergent pathway model that suggests different etiologic pathways for melanoma based on (1) pattern of sun exposure, as characterized by anatomic site, and (2) host factors such as propensity for melanocyte proliferation, as characterized by nevus status. Study subjects consisted of 528 newly diagnosed cases of melanoma among Caucasian residents of Connecticut. Nurse-interviewers obtained information on age, gender, hair color, eye color, skin color, history of sun exposure, history of painful sunburns, anatomic site of melanoma, and number of nevi on both arms …
Prenatal Alcohol: Effect On Depression And Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Levels, Mary Laughlin, Andrea Allan
Prenatal Alcohol: Effect On Depression And Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Levels, Mary Laughlin, Andrea Allan
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Fetal alcohol exposure poses a significant social problem. Conservative rates of Fetal alcohol syndrome and Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ARND) together have been estimated at 9.1/1000 live births (Sampson 1997). Prenatal ethanol exposure can produce subtle learning disabilities in children, which may not become apparent until a child is school-aged and can occur in the absence of other physical evidence of alcohol-related birth defects. Along with cognitive deficits, ARND has been associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has been linked to polymorphisms in the Brian Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) …

Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs And Behaviors Related To Health Among The Indigenous Peoples In Ecuador And The Potential Application Of Telehealth, Ming-Jai Liu, Erika Mendoza, Kevin Henry, Dale Alverson
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
There is much concern of health effects related to gas drilling in the provinces of Ecuador. Recent research has shown a possible correlation between oil drilling and a multitude of health problems (1). Cancer rates in particular may be elevated in populations exposed to the drilling pollutants; while intriguing, this research remains inconclusive in large partly because of difficulties in diagnosing cancer among other health problems in rural populations, but also due to local peoples perception of exposure. It has been determined that previous explorations between petroleum and cancer had not been approached directly in terms of taking indigenous peoples …

Testicular Embryonal Carcinoma Cell Proliferation In Vitro: Effect Of B152, An Anti-Hyperglycosylated Hcg Monoclonal Antibody, Lawanda Jim, Laurence Cole
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Hyperglycosylated human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG-H), a variant of hCG, has been shown to promote the growth and invasion of trophoblast cells in early pregnancy placental implantation, choriocarcinoma and testicular germ cell malignancies. In a previous study (15), hCG-H was found to have a significant effect on the growth of a choriocarcinoma cell line, JEG-3, and a testicular embroyonal carcinoma cell line, NTERA. It was also shown that, B152, an anti-hCG-H specific monoclonal antibody, significantly inhibited the growth of these cells in vitro and in vivo murine models. In this study, we quantified the amount of hCG-H produced by two embryonal …

Immunohistochemistry And Fish On Tissue Microarrays In The Evaluation Of Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor, Katherine Callahan, Kaari Reichard, Bryan Hall, John Hozier, Lisa Cerilli
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare soft tissue tumor composed of myofibroblasts with an inflammatory infiltrate. Various gene fusions involving the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene at chromosome 2p23 have been described in IMT, suggesting a neoplastic etiology. The ALK rearrangement is reportedly more common in children and there are only rare IMTs in adults with genetic information. This study represents the largest series of lesions designated as IMT on morphologic grounds with comparative ALK IHC and FISH analysis. Sixteen IMTs were retrieved from the UNM and UVa archives. Inclusion criteria required spindle cells, inflammatory cells and thorough clinical, …

Entry And Trafficking Of Human Papillomavirus Type 31 Into Human Keratinocytes, Jessica L. Smith
Entry And Trafficking Of Human Papillomavirus Type 31 Into Human Keratinocytes, Jessica L. Smith
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are small, nonenveloped double stranded DNA viruses that display a strict species and cell type tropism for human epithelial cells. The association between high-risk HPV types and cervical cancer is well established. Additionally, HPVs have been implicated as cofactors in development of several other epithelial cancer types. The difficulty associated with producing infectious HPV stocks, coupled with the complexity of detecting infection using standard virological methods has hindered research into some basic aspects of HPV biology. Recent advances have allowed for the production of high yield stocks of HPV particles for use in infectivity studies and has …
