Mountain View Design Project, John Barney, Sue Frye, Michaele Pride
Mountain View Design Project, John Barney, Sue Frye, Michaele Pride
Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects
Mountain View is a unique community bound by the Bosque and rich history of industry, agriculture, urban settlement and dispute. The boundary along 2nd Street marks the division within the community and its sense of place. It also marks a challenge to rethink the parameters of economy, ecology and welfare and reconcile the disparities between them. Our assignment was simple. Redesign 2nd Street. But along the way we realized that Mountain View holds much more meaning and purpose. This neighborhood has the potential to face its challenges through innovative, elegant design and serve as an example of a beautiful reconciliation. …

A Scaffolded Instructional Model To Teach Doctor Of Pharmacy Students To Evaluate Randomized And Non-Randomized Medical Studies On A Similar Topic To Reach A Clinical Conclusion, Stefani Dawn
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
The goal of this study was to test a scaffolded instructional model in a complex Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) lesson where students evaluated three different medical studies (RCT, case-control, and cohort) on the same topic and used those studies to reach an evidence-based conclusion. The hypothesis was that the students literature evaluation skills and subsequent application of the literature to address a clinical question would more closely approximate the experts following implementation of the model. The results do not fully support the hypothesis. The conclusions were: (1) third-year doctor of pharmacy students at the college have a limited ability to …
Topological Dynamics Of Spike-Timing Dependent Plastic Neural Networks, David Stone
Topological Dynamics Of Spike-Timing Dependent Plastic Neural Networks, David Stone
Psychology ETDs
The effects of continual spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) on the topology of evolving neural networks were assessed. After a period of stabilization, a number of topological features were monitored periodically throughout simulations of network activity to quantify changes in network structure. Under a range of different input regimes and initial network configurations, each network maintained a robust and highly stable global structure. At the same time, a substantial set of small three-neuron subgraphs (triads) continued to undergo an array of changes and revealed a dynamic local topology. These findings suggest that on-going STDP provides an efficient means of selecting and …
Exploring The Phenomenon Of Self-Mutilation Among Adult Males In A Correctional Setting: A Quantitative And Qualitative Inquiry, Yolanda Morales
Exploring The Phenomenon Of Self-Mutilation Among Adult Males In A Correctional Setting: A Quantitative And Qualitative Inquiry, Yolanda Morales
Nursing ETDs
The overall aim of this mixed method inquiry was to increase understanding of self-mutilation by adult males in a correctional setting. This study explored the self-mutilating attributes such as type and motivational factors, to identify factors associated with self-mutilation among adult males in a correctional setting. Self-mutilation has classically been associated with adolescents and females; however, behind the walls of many correctional institutions, adult males are engaging in self-mutilating behavior. Self-mutilation by this population can have serious health consequences, impact the safety of the institution, and also have fiscal consequences. While this remains a serious forensic issue, there is a …

Quantification And Propagation Of Nuclear Data Uncertainties, Michael Rising
Quantification And Propagation Of Nuclear Data Uncertainties, Michael Rising
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
The use of several uncertainty quantification and propagation methodologies is investigated in the context of the prompt fission neutron spectrum (PFNS) uncertainties and its impact on critical reactor assemblies. First, the first-order, linear Kalman filter is used as a nuclear data evaluation and uncertainty quantification tool combining available PFNS experimental data and a modified version of the Los Alamos (LA) model. The experimental covariance matrices, not generally given in the EXFOR database, are computed using the GMA methodology used by the IAEA to establish more appropriate correlations within each experiment. Then, using systematics relating the LA model parameters across a …
Human Inspired Pattern Recognition Via Local Invariant Features, Dominic Ron Maestas
Human Inspired Pattern Recognition Via Local Invariant Features, Dominic Ron Maestas
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Vision is increasingly becoming a vital element in the manufacturing industry. As complex as it already is, vision is becoming even more difficult to implement in a pattern recognition environment as it converges toward the level of what humans visualize. Relevant brain work technologies are allowing vision systems to add capability and tasks that were long reserved for humans. The ability to recognize patterns like humans do is a good goal in terms of performance metrics for manufacturing activities. To achieve this goal, we created a neural network that achieves pattern recognition analogous to the human visual cortex using high …
The Effect Of Oral Glutamine Supplementation On Gut Permeability And Heat Shock Protein Regulation In Runners With A History Of Gastrointestinal Distress, Micah Zuhl
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Gastrointestinal (GI) permeability increases during high intensity exercise leading to endotoxin leakage, and a pro-inflammatory immune response. The purpose of this study are to assess whether oral glutamine supplementation (1) reduces exercise induced permeability through up-regulation of the heat shock response resulting in occludin stabilization, and (2) depresses the exercise induced inflammatory response. Methods. Eight human subjects (n=8) participated in baseline (PRE) testing, a glutamine (GLN), and placebo (PLA) supplementation trial in a double blind design. After PRE measurements, subjects ingested .9g/kg fat free mass of glutamine per day or a sugar free lemon placebo drink for seven days with …
Biofilm Formation By Shewanella Oneidensis Mr-1 Towards Fundamental Understanding Of Anode Respiring Communities, Jared Roy
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Microbial fuel cells are bioelectrochemical devices where, on the anode, microorganisms oxidize complex carbon sources and reduce the electrode via complex mechanisms of extra-cellular electron transfer (EET). To date, Geobacter sulfurreducens has been identified as producing not only the largest current density but also large population density biofilms, of the known model organisms commonly used within the field. Another common model organism associated with microbial fuel cells is Shewanella oneidensis, containing multiple EET mechanisms and an apparent inability to form multi-layered biofilms in anaerobic culturing, i.e. microbial fuel cell operating conditions. In contrast to G. sulfurreducens, S. oneidensis biofilm formation …
Nonlinear Microscopy For Material Characterization, Reed Weber
Nonlinear Microscopy For Material Characterization, Reed Weber
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Making use of femtosecond laser sources, nonlinear microscopy provides access to previously unstudied aspects of materials. By probing third order nonlinear optical signals determined by the nonlinear susceptibility chi(3), which is present in all materials, we gain insight not available by conventional linear or electron microscopy. Third-harmonic (TH) microscopy is applied to supplement laser-induced damage studies of dielectric oxide thin film optical coatings. We present high contrast (S/N> 100 : 1) TH imaging of ~17 nm nanoindentations, individual 10 nm gold nanoparticles, nascent scandia and hafnia films, and laser induced material modification both above and below damage threshold conditions in …
On The Spatial Predictability Of Wireless Channels And Robust Networked Cooperation In Mobile Sensor Networks, Mehrzad Malmirchegini
On The Spatial Predictability Of Wireless Channels And Robust Networked Cooperation In Mobile Sensor Networks, Mehrzad Malmirchegini
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The wireless sensor network revolution has created the possibility of exploring and controlling the environment in ways not possible before. The vision of a multi-agent network cooperatively learning and adapting in harsh unknown environments to achieve a common goal is closer than ever. In such networks, communication plays a key role in the overall performance of the network as each mobile agent improves its knowledge by processing the information received from others. Therefore, proper prediction of the communication signal strength and fundamentally understanding the spatial predictability of a wireless channel, based on only a few measurements, become considerably important. The …
Estimation And Stability Of Nonlinear Control Systems Under Intermittent Information With Applications To Multi-Agent Robotics, Domagoj Tolic
Estimation And Stability Of Nonlinear Control Systems Under Intermittent Information With Applications To Multi-Agent Robotics, Domagoj Tolic
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This dissertation investigates the role of intermittent information in estimation and control problems and applies the obtained results to multi-agent tasks in robotics. First, we develop a stochastic hybrid model of mobile networks able to capture a large variety of heterogeneous multi-agent problems and phenomena. This model is applied to a case study where a heterogeneous mobile sensor network cooperatively detects and tracks mobile targets based on intermittent observations. When these observations form a satisfactory target trajectory, a mobile sensor is switched to the pursuit mode and deployed to capture the target. The cost of operating the sensors is determined …
Multifunctional Oxidation Electrocatalysts For Direct Alkaline Fuel Cells, Ulises Martinez
Multifunctional Oxidation Electrocatalysts For Direct Alkaline Fuel Cells, Ulises Martinez
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The need for the development of new technologies to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels requires the combination of different energy sources such as wind, solar, nuclear as well as new energy storage and powering devices. Amongst these new technologies fuel cells are a promising technology capable of transforming chemical energy stored in fuels into electric power at higher efficiencies than combustion processes. However, the commercialization of fuel cells has been limited due to the high costs associated with electrocatalysts needed for the corrosive environments in which proton-exchange membrane fuel cells operate. Electrocatalysts for such fuel cells are based on …

Impact Of Carbon Support Chemistry, Morphology, And Structure On Platinum Catalyst Durability For Pemfc Applications, Anant Patel
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are a promising alternative energy source, capable of being deployed as successful replacements in many stationary and mobile applications. These devices, however, lack durability, and this has become one of the limiting factors for commercialization. Many projects have focused on finding ways to improve their lifetimes, but few have tried to examine the underlying causes behind their corrosion. The goal of this project was to identify which parameters have a significant impact, both positive and negative, on PEMFC durability. To do this, three series of samples were analyzed using microscopic, spectroscopic, and electrochemical methods. Electron …
Are Graduate Students Rational? Macroeconomic Determinants Of Graduate Enrollment And Completions In The Biomedical Sciences, John Clack
Economics ETDs
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget doubling from 1998 through 2003 stimulated demand for biomedical scientists, increasing both relative wages and employment. However, because research doctorates in these fields may take six years or more to complete, there is a substantial lag in the labor supply response to changing market conditions. Rational expectations models assume that prospective graduate students can forecast their expected future wages, taking into account other students likely responses and thus also future employment levels. However, prior research on student enrollment and degree completion in science and engineering fields suggests that market conditions at the time …
Transport Theoretical Studies Of Some Microscopic And Macroscopic Systems, Alden Astwood
Transport Theoretical Studies Of Some Microscopic And Macroscopic Systems, Alden Astwood
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
This dissertation is a report on theoretical transport studies of two systems of vastly different sizes. The first topic is electronic motion in quantum wires. In recent years, it has become possible to fabricate wires that are so small that quantum effects become important. The conduction properties of these wires are quite different than those of macroscopic wires. In this dissertation, we seek to understand scattering effects in quantum wires in a simple way. Some of the existing formalisms for studying transport in quantum wires are reviewed, and one such formalism is applied to calculate conductance in some simple systems. …
Numerical Simulation Of Traffic Flow Using A Hydrodynamic Model, Craig Vanderploeg
Numerical Simulation Of Traffic Flow Using A Hydrodynamic Model, Craig Vanderploeg
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
We examine the solution to the system of partial differential equations for the transport and continuity equations. The model for our system of equations closely resembles the Payne-Whitham model for traffic flow. The solution can be approximated closely through the method of finite differencing. We approach this approximation of the solution through computer simulation in Matlab.
Nanomechanical Characterization Of Asphalt, Hasan Faisal
Nanomechanical Characterization Of Asphalt, Hasan Faisal
Civil Engineering ETDs
In this study, asphalt binder and asphalt concrete (AC) materials are characterized using laboratory nanoindentation testing and mechanical models. Traditionally, laboratory nanoindentation test data is analyzed using the Oliver-Pharr method to determine elastic modulus and hardness of materials. In a nanoindentation test, a test sample surface is indented or loaded by a hard indenter tip and then unloaded. In the past, several studies of the polymer materials area have selected a loading rate and dwell time (i.e., the peak load is kept constant for a few seconds before unloading) to avoid or minimize the viscous effect of a material. No …
Distributed Force Model For Arbitrarily Shaped Impc Actuators, Manuel Martinez
Distributed Force Model For Arbitrarily Shaped Impc Actuators, Manuel Martinez
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
A model that describes the relationship of an arbitrarily shaped artificial muscle to the force it produces does not currently exist for actuators made of ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC), a type of electroactive smart material. The model in this thesis couples a finite element force simulation for IPMC with a novel method of performing force measurements for IPMC actuators. The model is capable of predicting the blocked force output for IPMC actuators of arbitrary dimension. The ultimate goal of this work is to create a method of analysis that allows for the design of custom IPMC fingers that have specific …
Whither The World Polity? A Contribution To The Study Of International Organizations Through Survival Analysis Of Oecd Accession Rates, Kathryn Overton
Whither The World Polity? A Contribution To The Study Of International Organizations Through Survival Analysis Of Oecd Accession Rates, Kathryn Overton
Sociology ETDs
Accession to international governmental organizations (IGOs) has become an important corollary of modern international relations. Not only have IGOs proliferated significantly over the past fifty years, but, institutionalist paradigms, such as World Polity theory, suggest membership to such entities is inherent to the definition of modern statehood. Although IGO accession is rather commonplace, a full understanding of the motivation and gains associated with such commitments is not fully established. The current project contributes to this scholarly debate by applying World Polity theory to the question of why IGOs actively invite certain states into membership negotiations. The author employs a survival …
The Effects Of Continuing Bond On Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Complicated Grief Among Parents Bereaved By The Suicide Of Their Child, Carol Capitano
The Effects Of Continuing Bond On Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Complicated Grief Among Parents Bereaved By The Suicide Of Their Child, Carol Capitano
Nursing ETDs
There is a paucity of research on the effect of parents maintaining a continuing bond with their child who died by suicide. Furthermore, there is a gap in the research literature regarding differences among the parental continuing bond, posttraumatic stress, and complicated grief between parents who directly witnessed the suicide or found the body of their child and parents who were notified of the suicide by indirect methods (police, clergy, family, media, etc). This quantitative study included a convenience sample of 219 participants (response rate = 63.29%) who self-identified as parents whose child died by suicide 6 or more months …
Detection And Classification Of Diabetic Retinopathy Pathologies In Fundus Images, Carla Paola Agurto Rios
Detection And Classification Of Diabetic Retinopathy Pathologies In Fundus Images, Carla Paola Agurto Rios
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a disease that affects up to 80% of diabetics around the world. It is the second greatest cause of blindness in the Western world, and one of the leading causes of blindness in the U.S. Many studies have demonstrated that early treatment can reduce the number of sight-threatening DR cases, mitigating the medical and economic impact of the disease. Accurate, early detection of eye disease is important because of its potential to reduce rates of blindness worldwide. Retinal photography for DR has been promoted for decades for its utility in both disease screening and clinical research …
Biological And Biomimetic Oxygen Electro-Reduction By Enzymes, Shayna Brocato
Biological And Biomimetic Oxygen Electro-Reduction By Enzymes, Shayna Brocato
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Enzyme catalysts are a viable alternative to the traditional platinum based catalysts for the complete oxidation of complex fuels. Efficient oxidation of multi-carbon compounds, selective catalytic activity eliminating the need for fuel purification, and high performance under mild temperature and pH conditions make enzyme catalysts appealing for applications in vivo, implantable, and in vitro, portable energy sources. The full catalytic potential of enzymes can only be obtained if the full energy potential of a biofuel, complete oxidation to CO2, is obtained; this requires multiple reactions, i.e. multiple enzymes or an enzyme cascade. The efficiency of enzyme cascades improves with quaternary …
Flow In Thin Regions Bounded By Structured And Porous Surfaces : Applications To Load Bearings, Abishek Venkatakrishnan
Flow In Thin Regions Bounded By Structured And Porous Surfaces : Applications To Load Bearings, Abishek Venkatakrishnan
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The effect of surface roughness on the load capacity and friction force of hydrodynamic bearings has received considerable interest from scientists and engineers. Surfaces of most engineered materials are textured at some level either deliberately to achieve some desired effect or produced by wear and friction of surfaces. This thesis analyses the effect of surface roughness and porosity on the load capacity of hydrodynamic bearings. The surface roughness is characterized by a single sinusoidal wave function. The implementation of sinusoidal roughness model is verified using a verification problem. Reynolds lubrication theory, derived from thin-region approximations of the Navier-Stokes equations, is …
